Tulirose-I know what you mean. I've been to a few meets here in OHio and some of the people there know a lot more people in real life and from the boards than I do. That can be kind of odd. But I just enjoyed listening and then coming home and trying to figure out who they were talking about. 
I guess I'd just say I've met some great people at our meets and we talk about all things. The boards, the people, the latest Disney trip, and that seems to lead to other things...like our kids, our families, etc.
I would say, Try It. It is kind of weird to tell people you are going to a party/meet with your Internet Friends, but it actually is pretty fun.
And to those spouses that think it's a little crazy....talk to Dizneenut's DH! He felt that way and now he's a meet convert.
