Abandoned Attractions

The first time we visited Disney's MGM Studios (back in April 1990), our family was in some type of production where we were on a set dressed up in costumes and a "director" gave us lines to practice then had us act out a scene (which of course was videotaped so we could purchase it).

Our scene took place in a spaceship and we were dressed up as coneheads. The director was fantastic - he played the part of a stereotypical fast-talking hollywood professional from the 40's - full of quips and one-liners. Come to think of it, his persona was more hollywood agent than director, but either way, I remember he had us in stitches the entire time. There was also a really funny lady who played the director's bumbling assistant - she held a clap-board and yelled out "scene 1, take 2.....and......ACTION!". The two of them had great chemistry.

Does anyone remember what this "attraction" was? How long was it offered? How many different "scenes" did they offer? I don't remember being able to pick our scene - was that an option? Also, I can't remember how much my parents paid for the videotape (I was 12 at the time), but considering we had 2 talented CM's devoted to us for at least 15 minutes, I have to assume the finished videotapes weren't cheap. It was a really cool experience - I haven't seen that tape in almost 20 years - I'll have to see if my parents can find it..

Yes! It was Superstar Television!!!! Wikipedia talks about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney's_Hollywood_Studios

Also here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cw2-p1-XURs (Skip to around 2:30 mark)

My favorite was the I Love Lucy scene from the chocolate factory.

It then had an incarnation as Doug Live I believe! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFbNVQEfhJ4

Are you sure that was Superstar TV? That sounds more like something that my sister and I did when we were young. My dad used to work for Superstar TV and that was more of a full blown show/attarction ,with scenes even from Howdy Doody, than what this was. This took place inside a store of some sort. My sister and I did not do the "spaceship" theme but some "Hollywood" theme (I was a director of some sort and my sister was an actress trying to make it big); they gave us costumes, props, and we had to read lines from cue cards. My dad did get the tape (but I am not sure if he paid for it, because he knew the peeps who ran the equipment there, LOL). I have not watched that tape in a few years, because my VCR is in the attic, but maybe if I drag it out it will say the name of this smaller attraction.

I just asked my dad what the name was of the attraction, ended up he did work on it as well, and it was called Screentest. That seems right, because if I remember correctly it was as if my sister and I was being auditioned.

I remember the Horizons ride! I loved that ride and wondered what happened to it...I was devastated when they got rid of Mr. Toads Wild Ride. My brother and I loved that ride...I really wish I could have shared that one with my son.

Time for a trip to Disneyland, Mr Toad still there and going strong. Were the explorer canoes ever at WDW? I don't remember them as a kid but I have enjoyed them as an adult at DL. I guess the Keel Boats are still operational at DLP but we just came back and they weren't running. Apparently the run for July and August only.

I may be in the minority here but I think these photos are fascinating! (And a tad bit creepy.)

There use to be a show on t.v. called "The Scariest Places on Earth". Some of these places look like they could qualify. I wonder if they are haunted by the ghosts of Disney Charecters Past?

:rotfl: :goodvibes

I'm really glad I stumbled across that website, but every time I think about the current construction and the fact that they're getting rid of Toon Town, etc. I think of those pictures of the destroyed squids and the sea serpent in pieces. So on one hand I got lots of info, but I think I would have preferred to think that maybe somewhere there was a warehouse of old ride props (who cares if it's completely implausible) than to know they're really just smashed to bits and swept away. :sad2:

How about the improv troop, the Anacomical Players! I can't believe I actually remember this stuff!!

I loved the improv troop! My husband and I went in 1997 and laughed our butts off at them. We were disappointed when we found out they were no longer there.

Didn't get through all of the thread, but didn't see anyone mention IF YOU HAD WINGS - Delta Dreamflight?? That was always one of my favorites. I can still hear the song in my head.

I think the pictures I have of Toon Town was called Mickey's Starland back in 1992/93. Is this right????

I just spent 20 minutes finding and watching old YouTube videos of that ride because of this thread--sad huh?? :lmao: Every time I go on the Buzz Lightyear ride and go through 'the tube' I think of "If You Had Wings".

Thanks for the info! :yay: I will keep that in mind.... My parents went to Disneyland for their honeymoon in 1974. My mom still has the admission tickets, it only cost $5 back then to get in...imagine that

Cool thread, I went just about every year from about 1973 through the late 1980's, camping in a pop-up camper most years. Some things I remember that I haven't seen mentioned (or maybe I missed):
  • The EPCOT ultralight show over the lake,
  • the make your own rollercoaster games at EPCOT communicore,
  • the roller rink at Pleasure Island,
  • canoeing at Magic Kingdom,
  • the Audio-Animatronic show at Commicore (only a vague memory, but i think this had the dad from Carousal of Progress)
trying to catch minnows in the water at River Country (they were removed at some point)
    no SUV strollers........

Anyone know anything about what looks like an unbuilt golf course just east of pop century

I think so, and as I recall before that it was called Mickey's Birthdayland. I seem to remember that it was oriiginally just supposed to be a temporary attraction built in honor of Mickey's 60th birthday.

I love this thread! It fun (and a bit sad) to be reminded of all of these things.

I'm particularly intrigued by the posts about Communicore. I've been trying to remember some of it but I only came up with a dull static display involving energy and there was a place to take surveys. I also remember an amusing robot that talked to people. His name was SMRT-1. Later there was also a place with video games prototypes (Sega?) that I had trouble getting DS out of. ;)

I really wish I could have experienced 20,000 Leagues Submarine. I was at WDW for my very 1st time in 1990, how did I miss it ?????
When did it close ????

So, thanks for the pix, it is such amazing and fun reading !!!

Don't know how you missed it the ride did not close until 1994.

What I liked best about the old Toontown was that it was a real "town" with scaled down store fronts and buildings and a sign that read "Welcome to Duckburg".
