AA miles for minors?

I couldn't find this on the AA FAQ page, and I wanted to avoid calling the 800# at all costs. :)

Should I be getting AA miles when I buy tickets for the kids? If not, are they supposed to have their own AA accouts or are those purchases just considered point-less? LOL

Thanks!

Our 5 year old has an AA number. She currently only collects for miles when the ticket is bought with money. We have flown her on our miles a couple times. Then she does not accrue miles--no one does.

I've considered getting a credit card with her name on it.....It would build her credit and build her miles account. But that seems a little silly.

But yes, if you've bought tickets for kids, they should collect miles. Get them account numbers. You should be able to apply for it online. We know we missed a couple flights by not doing it sooner (like when she was a baby), but collecting some is better than none, especially if you are loyal to a particular airline.

I do not have trouble calling AA the few times I have needed to either.

Kids have to earn miles on their account.

I've been a member of AAdvantage since the first year, and held elite status by the time I was 9. I hit lifetime gold at 17 and lifetime platinum at 26.

It depends on the miles you want to accrue.
If you purchase the tickets with your AA Citibank card you will accrue miles for the purchase amount, just like any other purchase.
You do not get their flight miles just because you bought the tickets. Only the person traveling can accrue the flight miles. For this your kids should have their own Aadvantage numbers.

Good for you!!!! :cool1:

I was happy when my 4 yr old had Silver Status on Continental. :)

And now at.. well, older than that I've been boycotting AA and flying Jetblue domestically where there's no such thing as status, Iberia internationally/transatlantic where status doesn't matter, and Copa international/regional where status gets me an ice cream sundae.

Got them signed up yesterday. Wish I'd done it sooner! Oh well. :-) We fly just enough to maybe get a random free flight in here and there, but that includes work travel. It would be quite awhile before the kids earned something. Also, we tend to use whatever airline is cheapest and that spreads the reward points thinner, too.
Thanks!
