Hubby and I spend a weekend at Disney World in mid-November...our first-ever view of Disney Christmas decor. We loved it. We arrived about 4:45 at Coronado Springs & checked in. Must say we thought CSR is pretty, but we really did not care for it as much as POFQ (which had been our first choice, but was unavailable with the annual pass discount for our weekend.) CSR is just too big and too spread out for us. We're totally spoiled by the small resorts I guess. We did like the CSR queen-sized beds, though. Hope they upgrade all the mods to those. Since the main point of this trip was to see some of the Christmas decor, and the two restaurants we wanted to try were not signature places we opted for the regular Disney Dining plan...figuring if the appetizers appealed to us we'd just pay cash OOP for them. Turns out we didn't even order apps so glad we did not pay for the DxDP this time. Our table service choices were both first-times for us: La Hacienda & 'Ohana. We planned on flexibility on counter service, and that worked well in the end.

Anyway, after checking in, we headed to DHS to see the Osborn Lights. We arrived in enough time to take a few pictures before heading to Streets of America area. Since dinner was going to be late, we decided to split a snack:
what better way to kick-off the Disney weekend with a Mickey on a stick: Here's the funny Hubby with his Mickey Bar & Christmas Décor. Delicious ice creamy goodness, as usual:

We found a viewing spot shortly before sun-down and waited for the lights to come on. The sun set at 5:40 that day, and the lights came on at 6:00 for anyone wondering how soon after sunset the lights start. It was awesome to be there right when they throw the switch --absolutely breath-taking to see the millions of lights come on.

After being awed by the beautiful lights & music show at DHS, we headed over to Epcot for a 7:45 ADR at La Hacienda. There was a huge group of people waiting to be seated when we checked in at 7:30, but the hostess said we'd be seated right on time for our reservation, and we were seated just a minute or two after 7:45. We were given window seats...but *Note* I've read over & over that "you can see Illuminations from anywhere in there." This is NOT true...apparently the folks voicing that were sitting in the main room where yes, it looks like you could see Illuminations from any seat. However, the place is kind of set up in an "L" shape, and the smaller side of the L, the windows face the dark walkway in front of Mexico --the part where you're leaving Mexico & heading on toward the rest of the World Showcase. I'd guesstimate about 1/3 of the La Hacienda tables have no view. So a major FYI: it's totally possible to have a window-seat at La Hacienda without a view. Which was OK with us...we've seen Illuminations many times & this visit we mainly just wanted to try the restaurant. Sure it would have been nice to have a lovely window-view of Illuminations with our meal but was not a deal-breaker to have no view. But if you definitely want to see Illuminations while you're eating at La Hacienda, I would get a reservation no later than 7:15 for a 9:00 Illuminations to allow time to wait for a good viewing table. Then when you check in, tell them you want to sit in the main, bigger room, not the side room. If they steer you towards the left once you get into the dining room, you're going to be in the side that has no view. Now people did get up and go stand in the other part of the restaurant (they dim the lights & you can hear the music) but if you want to sit & watch, do make that request when you check in.

Anyway, the decor is warm & inviting, but as usual the tables are way too close together. You will be sharing conversations with the couple at the next table...they're only about 12 inches away from you. Which works out fine if you're friendly. Our waiter started us off with La Hacienda specialty margaritas. Hubby's choice was the orange-colored drink in the picture, which was the "Mango Blueberry Basil Margarita - El Mayor premium silver Tequila, coconut rum, orange juice, mango, blueberries, basil, served on the rocks with a hibiscus salt rim - $13.00" This was wonderful, and very strong. I chose the "Rosita Margarita" - which is also " El Mayor Premium silver Tequila," along with "orange liqueur, fresh lime juice, rose syrup with hibiscus salt on the rim - $13.00" This was also very strong, booze-wise, and an interesting flavor. You could definitely taste/smell the rose elements (the red "blob" floating on top of the glass is actually rose petals) In the end, I couldn't finish this - the booze taste was just too strong for me! Hubby finished it.

lhspecialtymargaritas.jpg

We debated on getting appetizers, but nothing was jumping out at us, and then when our server brought out Warm tortilla chips with two dips we decided not to order apps & just munch on the chips. The tortilla chips were from a bag, but nicely warmed up & salty. I liked the green dip (I believe it was tomatilla-based) This was mildly spicy: maybe just a little oily...but it was very tasty. Hubby warned me the red dip was hot-spicy, so of course I didn't even try it (he only ate a little of it, was too hot for him too.)
lhchips.jpg

In going over the menu with us, our server told us we could order the "serves 2 people" platter on the regular dining plan: it would just count as the entree for both of us. These two menu items intrigued us, as it looked like a good way to get samples of several different items in one entree. So we debated between the two "for 2" offerings, since both looked interesting:

Parrillada (serves 2 people) - "Del Mar." Mixed grill offering mahi mahi, shrimp, scallops and vegetables, served with beans and fresh salsa - $49.95
Parrillada (serves 2 people) - "La Hacienda" Mixed grill offering flank steak, chicken al pastor, chorizo and vegetables, served with beans and fresh salsa. - $49.95

In the end, since we have so much good fresh seafood when we're in our Tampa condo, we went non-seafood & chose the Parrillada La Hacienda - which comes with steak, chicken & sausage as the meats:
lhmeatplattertoppic.jpg

On this platter, at the bottom of the platter, center, is roasted corn & peppers with melted cheese on top...this was very fresh, crunchy and delicious. But deceptively HOT! spicy. I ate several fork-fulls before the back-burner kicked in...drank about 6 oz. of water in a big hurry! To the left of the corn was the chorizo (pork sausage) which was similar to mild italian sausage, just a tiny bit of zing. In the middle/top on the platter is the flank steak. This was wonderful: tender, cooked rare as we requested. The pesto-like salsa was just spicy enough for me. Below the steak was an assortment of veggies....mostly peppers, some artichoke & I don't know what-all...there were a couple of "interesting" veggies in there (by "interesting" I mean take a bite & discreetly spit the remainder out. Ugh. Mushy, tasted like dirt. No idea what veggie it was supposed to be.) We ate some, left some of the veggies. The chicken is over to the right. This was also delicious...kind of a sweet/tangy marinade on this (sort of fruity-tasting barbecue sauce flavor to it) again, just a slight kick but totally suitable for my wimpy mouth.

The platter was accompanied by Black beans and rice. The black beans were outstanding: like refried beans, but tasted freshly prepared, with a mild flavor. The rice was plain, but mixed with some of the food from the platter, the plain rice did a nice job of taking the extra-hot down a notch (or at least spreading the pain out, lol.)
lhblackbeansandrice.jpg

The platter also came with a pot of soft, small, warm tortillas. This were great for making mini-tacos with items from the platter. One suggestion I'd make is immediately ask for more when they serve the platter, or even ask for 2 pots of tortillas when you order, because you will probably want more than they give you.
lhwarmtacoshells.jpg

All in all, we really enjoyed this platter...and it proved to be a very popular dish that night. Right after we were served, the couple at the next table (remember, only a foot away from us!) asked us what it was. And then they ordered it...and then, once they were served, the couple at the next table to them asked what it was, and that table ordered it too...like dominoes-ordering, one table after another, lol.

Although we were fairly full, we were on the dining plan, so decided to go ahead & get dessert. I ordered the Chocolate custard dessert, because I was wanting something chocolate. Looking at both allears & wdwinfo menus, the only chocolate dessert I find listed is: "Chocolate con Churros - Traditional Mexican hot chocolate accompanied by fresh churros and cajeta (caramel) sauce $7.95" Now I don't know if that's what I actually had...because what I had was supposed to be a chocolate custard (according to our server.) If traditional Mexican hot chocolate is just hot milk, thickened to custard consistency...well I guess that's what this was. I don't think of hot chocolate being custard texture. And I really MUST remember not to order any Mexican custard-type desserts, because so far every one I've ever had, including this one, was pretty tasteless. Short on sugar & short on flavor. Literally just milk thickened with flour -- blah. Pasty. This was brown-colored instead of chocolate-flavored: virtually no "chocolate" flavor to it at all. It was bruleed on top--crunchy like creme brulee, so that must have been where the "cajeta caramel sauce" went-- but it was flambeau'd into tasteless crunchiness. That crunchy topping was not sweet like you'd expect caramel sauce to be. And the "fresh churros"...well that's what those little bits of scattered on top were...was maybe a total of a tablespoon of churro chunks. Not enough to know if they were "fresh" or not. VERY Disappointing dessert.
lcchoccustard.jpg

Hubby's all time fave Disney treat is the apple turnovers from Main Street Bakery, so he had to get the "Empanada de Manzana - Puff pastry filled with sauteed caramel apples and vanilla bean ice cream with kahlua sauce - $7.95 " He liked this pretty well, but thought it was a bit too heavy on the pastry and much too light on the apples. The ice cream had a strong caramel flavor, and was very tasty with the empanada.

lcappleemapanada.jpg

Service was excellent...decor is calming and welcoming. They dim the lights to near-darkness for Illuminations, which is not much fun if you're sitting in the wrong room: you can't see the show OR your food. Everything was covered by the dining plan except the adult beverages. The adult beverages ran us $27.16; Disney Dining covered the $74.80 for the shared platter, two desserts & two coffees. We liked the starters (warm chips & dips) and the specialty margaritas, though pricey, were good cocktails (and money's worth on the alcohol content, too.) We absolutely loved the La Hacienda platter for two. The desserts...the chocolate custard was a total waste of spoon - would never order that again. The apple empanada was just OK. So I guess, we'd recommend the specialty margaritas, and the Ha Hacienda platter. But no desserts. We'd give La Hacienda an 7...taking a couple off for the less than stellar desserts, tables too close together, and the dim lights/lack of view for 1/3 of the restaurant.

It was very strange to go to two Disney parks in one evening and ride nothing. We were only at DHS long enough to see 30 minutes of Osborn lights, then off to Epcot just in time for our 7:45 ADR. By the time we finished dessert, Illuminations was over and the park closed (guess there's no EMH on Friday nights during Food & Wine Festival.:sad2:)

Really enjoying your reviews! We have the world's most outstanding flan here at Uncle Julio's in Dallas (had pumpkin flan yesterday and the chocolate flan starts Monday...Mmmmmm...) so I will know to steer clear of any flan-like dessert at La Hacienda! It could only lead to disappointment when we are already so spoiled!

Oh, one more thing...I really think there has to have been some kind of mistake on that dessert. I read the description and I would totally have expected a mug of spicy (cinnamon and chile pepper) hot chocolate and churros which are long Mexican donuts. That is NOT what I am seeing in your photo. I am not seeing churros on top of that flan...:confused3

yeah, I think the allears & wdwinfo menus have the error...I dug out my stack of receipts for the trip and my dessert rang up as "Chocolate Natilla"...which when I google comes up with a dessert described as chocolate custard. And that's what the waiter called it when I pointed to that choice on the menu: he said "so you want the chocolate custard?" This was definitely chocolate-colored custard (though not much chocolate flavor to it.) I do think those were busted churro chunks on top--fried/cinnamony sugar pastry like substance, anyway. Just a very small amount.

OK, have to apologize right off...we were so busy gawking at the holiday decor all over MK we did not take food pictures Saturday during the day...totally forgot at breakfast & lunch! I'll recycle some old pictures....since the foods we ordered were re-runs anyway.

Saturday was Magic Kingdom day, and we decided that though we were at the park early, we'd skip the mad-rope-drop-rush-for-rides in favor of doing something we've never done: start our day at the Main Street Bakery for breakfast. I chose my traditional giant-warm-gooey cinnamon roll, hot & fresh from the oven, and hubby went for his favorite: giant fresh hot apple turnover. Here's photos of past cinnamon roll and the apple turnover loverlies:

Well, let me be truthful here: that’s what the items should have looked like, and that's what we thought we were going to get. Reality wasn't quite the same:sad1: We joined the line at Main Street Bakery just after rope-drop, so there were about 10 people in line ahead of us. We get up there, get our order served up and we pay. Luckily we found a table (place was mobbed & lots of tables were being held by folks waiting for other family members to bring the food.) So we sit down to enjoy our fresh-baked goodness. And that’s when our dream of experiencing a wonderful warm & fresh Main Street Bakery breakfast turned into a nightmare. I should have known something was wrong because I wasn’t getting the hot-cinnamon-baking-smell when we first walked in. As it turns out, both pastries were COLD! Like straight-out-of-the-refrigerator-cold. Like frosting-was-almost-frozen-cold. Instead of dripping warm icing, it was breaking-off-in-solid-chunks cold icing. And the cinnamon roll itself was so stale it had to be from the day before. I'm sure it was stored somewhere that was not air-tight. The outside edge -- or I should say the outside "2/3" of the roll was absolutely shoe leather – I could not even begin to bite through it – it was so tough I had to tear it apart. The very middle of the roll was edible, but even that was stale-chewy, not soft. And Not warm at all. So I got about 1/3 of a cinnamon roll, and chucked the rest of the yucko thing - if the line had been shorter I would have taken it back, but the line was doubled up/snaking inside and actually went all the way out the door & up the sidewalk. That would have been a long wait. Even the cash registers were all backed up. Not worth the hassle or my time (which I suppose is what they count on when they serve sub-par food like this...people will just leave instead of waiting around to complain. I know, I should have but at that point I just wanted to get on with some fun in the park. :-(

Hubby’s turnover was also refrigerator-cold…it was somewhat fresher (at least he could bite through it, and it was still flaky.) But cold apple filling kind of congeals, ya know. Not very appealing. Needless to say, we were so disappointed. We have many times bought pastries late at night, popped them in a ziplock bag to store overnight & enjoyed room-temperature but still fresh, tasty & soft rolls. We’ve even taken them on the road home & had them 2 days later. If you keep them in an airtight-container, they’ll stay soft. Apparently the Main Street bakery doesn't even bother covering these rolls at the bakery, and then they store them in the refrigerated coolers...and doesn't bother warming them at all before serving in the A.M. Yuck. Why did I have it in my head that they actually bake the pastries fresh every morning? I'm sure I've read reviews where people got fresh/warm food in the mornings...maybe this is a new cost-cutting measure -- baking up a bunch the night before during regular hours & holding them overnight in the coolers so they don't have to pay bakers to get to work early in the AM & bake fresh before the park opens? Not very magical for the early park-goer, though. We won't waste rope-drop time stopping at Main Street Bakery again, that's for sure. We did use two snack credits to get these pastries...what a waste.

The crowds were not too bad early that morning, and we were able to do several favorites with no waiting: Mickey's Philharmagic, Small World (which was closed in September when we were there), then Haunted Mansion, Pirates, and Jungle Cruise. We also fastpassed Jungle Cruise, planning on using the fastpass in the evening after dark since we've heard that JC is extra fun to ride in the dark. We hopped the train in Frontierland, and rode it over to ToonTown for a short walk to Tomorrowland, thinking we'd ride Buzz (since we hadn't done that for awhile, either) but crowds had been pouring in during the morning and there were now long lines. So we fast-passed Buzz for evening and headed for the TTA. While the line was relatively short at TTA, the moving sidewalk up to the ride was not moving: that makes for a steep & uncomfortable walk (it's way to squishy for that much of an incline; irritating if you have bad knees.) I wonder if it was really broken, or if they turn the moving sidewalk off to control the crowds coming up to the loading platform...people tend to walk up the incline slower than if they were walking while it was moving up.

Anyway, after a relaxing ride on TTA, we were getting hungry for lunch. So we headed for Cosmic Rays around 11:15 or so, and I'm happy to report lunch turned out much better than breakfast. Even though we arrived at Cosmic Ray's early, there were long lines at all the stations. However, they are very efficient in there so we barely waited 5 minutes to order & get our food. Since we had an early dinner scheduled at 'Ohana (5.10 PM reservation) we decided we'd just split a BBQ combo platter...we've had these before & never finished them. It was a great choice for a split-meal, and a very good value for one Dining Plan counter-service. Here's a picture from a previous trip: they haven't changed, or cut back on this meal. The mashed potatoes are under the chicken in thise photo. We also got the prepackaged chocolate cake as a dessert & split a coke. The combo was hot, fresh ,very tasty and easily enough for two to share. The chocolate cake was actually fresh and ooey-gooey good, though very rich. Splitting the meal was perfect...and was the first time we actually finished one of these Cosmic Ray platters!

After lunch, the crowds at MK were getting crazy, so we left and headed for CSR for an afternoon break. Loved those queen size beds...great for stretching out. Did not love the TV. Though it was newer flat-screen somehow every time we turned it on it automagically defaulted to blasting the Disney resort channel at maximum volume. A call to the front desk resulted in a promise to fix it, but that was not seen to while we were there. Felt sorry for our next-door neighbors when we returned to resort at around midnight Saturday & hubby wanted to check football scores on ESPN: turned on TV & couldn't get it muted fast enough to avoid blasting. It's bad enough the dumb things default to the silly "Disney must do" channel, but to also have it reset itself for max volume every time? Not good.

After our afternoon break at CSR, we headed over to the Poly in good time to get to the podium area at 'Ohana about 15 minutes before our ADR...and we joined a humongous line at about 4.55 PM to check in for our 5.10 ADR. It actually took about 15 minutes to work our way up in the line to the podium, so we were checking in right at our reservation time. Which was fine because they actually didn't appear to start seating people until around 5.15 anyway. We ordered pina colavas from the bar & waited to be seated. Our buzzer went off about 10 minutes later, so we were seated just before 5:30, which I didn't think was bad, given what I've read about how fast 'Ohana gets backed up. Our hostess, gave us the little tour as we walked in to the restaurant. Stopping where they pick up the hot, fresh bread and pointed out the flaming grill, and they explain as they walk you to your table how the food will be served in courses & hot off the grill, etc.

We were seated in the main room, at the far end away from the grill. The first thing we noticed is that the restaurant was FREEZING. Even with that huge open fire at the end, the place felt like a meat cooler. I mentioned it to our waiter, and he said “Oh we think it’s a wonderful place to work because it’s about the only restaurant where it's comfortable for the servers.” So apparently the temp is set for the employee’s comfort, not the patrons. Funny way to run a restaurant...I'm all for good working conditions for staff, but I thought restaurants are in business to cater to paying clients, not for keeping the staff happy? But I've read some glowing reviews of 'Ohana, and this was the first trip in about 10 that I actually was able to get a reservation here before 9.30 at night, so we decided to stay. We ordered cokes & ice water since we still had a little of our pina colavas left when we sat down:
ohanadrinks.jpg

Now, to the bread…I’ve read so many rave reviews about this special pineapple bread. Well…I LOVE pineapple. And I love hot, fresh bread. Unfortunately, this was cold, tough & tasteless...apparently those "heat lamps" were just regular lamps because they had imparted no heat to this bread. And it's not served with butter, either. I was expecting something scrumptious like the fresh Hawaiian bread from Kona with the macadamia nut butter. NOT! Really, I wish I would have taken these two temperature clues (freezing restaurant and cold bread) and just left right then and there. We took one bite & left the rest...there was the promise of all that other good food to come, so what the heck on the bread, right?
ohanabread.jpg

Our beverages arrived, and I got a bonus in my ice water with a complementary protein serving: a mosquito doing the back float on the top (Sorry for the unclear photo—had trouble with glare off the ice & glass, but the mosquito is the blurry dark speck in the water, look to the right of the brown spot on the lemon…it was actually a good-sized dead mosquito in there) Then it took most of the meal to get a new glass of water:headache: . Again, should have listened to inner self saying LEAVE NOW! But I didn't.
ohanawaterwithmosquito.jpg

The other server dropped off the Meat sauces…note how greasy the peanut sauce looks….yuck.
ohanasauces.jpg

Next to arrive at the table were the Potstickers and sticky wings…surprise, surprise: these actually were warm, fresh and delicious. Also very, very messy. Thank heavens they deliver the hot, wet washcloths. Course we didn’t know it at the time, but the cloths were actually the hottest item served to us that night. The warm sticky wings came in second on temps...but at least they were warm. We liked these, but decided not to over-eat on them since so many good foods were scheduled to arrive.
ohanapotstickersandstickywings.jpg

The ‘Ohana salad showed up just after the wings. Now we are salad lovers, and this was not good salad: the lettuce was wilted and dressing was lacking—could just barely taste it…there was just enough to verify that yes, it is sweet dressing but not enough dressing for the size of the salad. The little bit of dressing on it was good, but we both just had a bite of the salad…not impressed with that at all, and figured we were really there for the grilled foods. (The lettuce was wet – with water, like it had just been rinsed. It was not wet with dressing.)
ohanasalad.jpg

The Noodles were delivered shortly after the salad. All I can say here is these were super-yuck. Tasteless, gloppy consistency and barely room temperature….thanks to the frigid A/C, these were completely cold by the time meat arrived. You’d think everything would be hot & fresh at 5:30 when the place just opened at 5:00. But anyway, 20 minutes later they’re dropping off room-temperature or cold food. Wondered if the stuff was leftovers from previous night and that they just didn’t reheat all the way? That’s about what the noodles tasted like…cold leftovers. At this point I asked the waiter if these foods were supposed to be cold or warm and did any of it come hot? He replied it was all supposed to be different temperatures depending on what it was...started in on a speech about ‘ohana means family, and it’s a shared family meal, blah blah blah and meant to be served in courses, not all together so of course things will be different temperatures. Sounded like a load of hooey to me…but just then the kids entertainment started and I couldn't hear a word he was saying over the noise.
ohananoodles.jpg

OK, got my flame suit on but I have to say. OMG! The entertainment in there is sooooooo bad. That woman’s voice is so annoyingly-cloyingly-fakey-dripping-sugary. Ugh. Note to adults … if you still want to eat at ‘ohana after this, make sure you request the non-entertainment room. And we were actually at the other end from Miss Annoya. Well, I’m sure the kids enjoyed it (except for the ones in our vicinity having tantrums because they didn't want to participate & parents were insisting how much "fun" they should be having...and then there was the little girl putting on a major pout because daddy wouldn't dance with her instead of mommy. So OK, not all the kids were having fun...) Holey-moley if they’re going to seat adults-only parties in the main room there, they should at least warn ya so you can get good & liquored up before the “entertainment” started.

During the "entertaining" pre-schoolers Hawaiian language class...where they were teaching the kids that Hawaiian words often have more than one meaning...I was tempted to ask Miss Annoya if the other meaning for 'Ohana was "cold family meal"...but anyway, we were rewarded with another edible dish: the Grilled shrimp…and it was actually served hot! Joy, joy, joy. Tasty, with a little bit of kick to it. Didn’t care for having to peel it, but otherwise it was quite good.
ohanagrilledshrimp.jpg

The shrimp was quickly followed by two more barely room-temp foods: “hot off the grill” according to our server. They actually were slid off full skewers, so I guess that must be a very low-heat grill? Anyway, the Grilled chicken was extremely dry, no flavor except the char sections, which of course were flavored "burnt." The other piece is grilled pork…which looked great…figured with the sauce it can’t be dry, right, so should be edible at least. Well, surprise! The sauce tasted like black licorice (major yuck) and of course char. Hubby did not believe me when I said it had a black licorice taste…then he took a bite and agreed. Suppose it was anise or somesuch, but the end result was not something we appreciated. Worst part was the meat was actually juicy but we couldn't eat it with that gross-flavored sauce…way to wreck a perfectly acceptable bite of grilled pork!
ohanagrilledchickenandpork.jpg

Then a bowl of broccoli arrived. Again, this item was just barely warm (mainly the bowl was warm, the food was room-temp) and these veggies were apparently plain steamed at some point (not recently, judging by the temp) but with no butter or seasoning on it. Not worth eating…
ohanabroccoli.jpg

We were both looking forward to the ‘Ohana grilled beef. Dang, disappointed again. This was a major Ugh. Like the chicken, the main flavor of the beef was char, and the texture was gross/mush that you get when you use the chemical tenderizers for too long on a cheap piece of steak. EWWWW. One bite, and we were done trying those foods.
ohanagrilledsteak.jpg

Our waiter came by about then and asked if we wanted more of anything…well, yes, where was my bug-free ice water? So he dashes off to get me water, sans bugs. By the time that comes , Miss Annoya is back out, this time doing a special performance for a wedding rehearsal dinner going on at ‘Ohana. OMG—she’s telling everyone to ding their spoons on their glasses repeatedly to keep the engaged couple kissing the whole time they’re dancing while she sings a horrible “love” song. If that had been me, I would have called off the wedding, lol. Just Kidding. I’m sure they were having great fun at the dinner, especially if they all had adult libations. Just wish the rest of us didn’t have to share in the "merriment" of the ding-ding-ding going on. Hubby said we should at least get a piece of wedding cake if we have to sit through the rehearsal dinner floor show.

Even though we were still hungry, we were sooo ready to get out of there - the noise level was really getting to me and I had a headache coming on. But again, having heard so much about the fabulous bread pudding dessert at ‘Ohana we decided maybe that would finally fill us up. Now I have tried many, many Disney bread puddings & sauces and loved all of them. This one actually was served warm (at least enough to make the ice cream start to melt.) Having heard that they may put too much sauce on it, I asked our server not to pour the sauce. OK, the sauce was good. But was this the best bread pudding ever? No. It was good, but way too sweet, and I only poured about 1/2 the sauce on it. Cannot imagine how sweet it would be with all the sauce on it. Even though we were both still hungry, we could only eat a few bites because it was just too sweet to fill up on. Our server came back and asked if we wanted anything else, and we said check, please! The entertainer was getting ready to start the coconut races & we wanted out before more noise started!
ohanabreadpuddingdessert.jpg

The total bill at 'Ohana (before tip) was $70.27 for two adult meals & soft drinks, which was covered by regular dining plan credits. Was it worth it? No. Hubby said he’d give it a 3 out of 10. Because the potstickers, wings & shrimp were good. Service was just barely alright…the food kept coming, they did check back a couple of times to see if we wanted refills on things. But that ice water did not get replaced on a timely basis. And other than the salad, I think the rest of the food was supposed to be served at least warm, if not hot. Serving it room temp or cool has nothing to do with “family style”…meat, noodles, veggies are supposed to be warm! These guys know they’re not serving warm/hot food…and "family style" is not an explanation of why the food is not hot. Seriously, I did not realize "family style" meant cold. The décor is OK in ‘Ohana, nothing spectacular - probably would have liked the decor more if we weren't freezing in there. The entertainment is annoying unless you have preschoolers in desperate need of entertainment. The food is mostly under-seasoned (except for that bizarre black-licorice sauce on the pork?) I agree with hubby…a 3 at best. Would we return? Never in a million years...here was an all you can eat meal & yet we left hungry because the food wasn't worth eating. As we left the Polynesian to head to the monorail & Magic Kingdom…we walked past a quiet, peaceful Kona Café….with a few empty tables. We both agreed next time we wanted to eat at the Polynesian, we’d return to Kona.

Sorry your meal at 'Ohana was a bust. I am not surprised! We decided to try it AGAIN after hearing the raves when 'Ohana switched from the pineapple/caramel dessert to the new bread pudding. So, I prepared our party of nine to be prepared to "lick the plate clean" since I was reading reports of that dessert being the best Disney dessert ever! Not one of us was wowed. Not one person had any desire to ever eat that again.

A few years ago I thought I was going to have my head served on a platter on these boards for daring to suggest that the entertainer woman at 'Ohana was incredibly annoying. We couldn't get away from her fast enough. (However, after my head was served to me by some bleeding hearts who thought I was a meanie and entertainer lady was the "sweetest" lady ever--lots of people came to my defense agreeing with me :thumbsup2). Fortunately, when we went back to try the bread pudding--we had the man who was not annoying at all.

Like you, I have no desire to ever go near that restaurant again!

Oh, I fully expect to get flamed for my opinion of Miss Annoya. I'm sure she has fans out there. However, I spent nearly 20 years in the child care business and feel fully qualified to judge preschool entertainment. This is not quality preschool entertainment. And for adults...well, :dance3: was about how crazy-making I found it.

Cathy, I'm finally able to wipe the tears away and stop laughing long enough to reply to you review. Ohana is not for the faint of heart or the hungry!!! I guess if you have kids and want food for the masses it's fine. Personally, myself I have outgrown the need for tons of food that sometimes is sub-par. I took my niece and nephews there (all teens) on our last trip and the boys thought they had died and gone to heaven. Me, not so much. I want my food hot, tastey and in a relaxed setting. I never mind spending money on vacation, but I want to spend it on good food. O'hana was quickly scratched off my list.

Bingo! That's exactly it. I don't think that's too much to ask at a restaurant...hot, tasty & relaxed atmosphere.

I can see the appeal of 'Ohana, especially at Disney prices, 'Ohana would work if you're trying to feed a crowd (especially if it included bottomless pit teen boys, yes, can see 'Ohana being a great solution for that!) But I am so past "quantity" and much prefer "quality" these days. We're glad we finally tried it (there's always that sneaking suspicion you're missing something special if you don't try things yourself.)

Mostly, we're secretly relieved we've now tried almost all of the Disney restaurants and will soon be doing almost all repeats of our favorites. There's still a couple of signature restaurants yet to try...and there are a couple of places we're probably not going to even try due to a total lack of interest(HDDR, WCC, Prime Time...menu & themes of these just do not appeal at all. The noise levels & antics-factor are about as far from fun as we want...raised 4 kids. We survived real-life antics and now feel we should be rewarded with peaceful table experiences.)

A Magical MK saturday evening...

We arrived at MK at about 7:30 PM and crowds were pouring in (MK had late EMH that night, so obvious where everyone was going to hang out Saturday night!) We got to see the Christmas decor on Main Street at night, with the lovely lights on Cinderella's castle...just awesome to see:

and the castle with the icicle lights, and the changing colors:

We used up our fastpasses collected earlier in the day. Love the fastpass system. Makes for some Great fun in a crowded park!

We managed to enjoy the nostalgia of the Main Street Electrical parade (though I actually do like Spectro much better...kind of like the MSE parade is the version 1, and Spectro was the much-improved upgrade.) After the parade we rode Pirates again (love doing that ride after dark...everything seems so much better in there in the dark.) When we came out, Wishes had started, so we headed towards Haunted Mansion. We got in the HM line right at the finale of Wishes, so we were just ahead of the parade crowd. HM is another ride that shows better after dark. Anyone else notice that? Anyway, when we came out of HM, it was no longer a walk-on, for sure.

Seeing the crowds everywhere, we decided we'd try to get out of the park before the 2nd MS Electrical Parade started. MK was really packed, so we figured we'd get going while the getting was good (it was EMH until 1 or 2 in the morning that night, so we were sure we'd get out without much trouble shortly before 11 P.M. Boy were we wrong! Apparently, most of the people in the park also decided to leave just then. As we were leaving MK, castmembers were trying to steer people to the monorails (although the line was huge) they were telling people the wait for ferries was 45-60 minutes, but the monorail to TTC was "only" 30-40 minutes. Well, we were headed back to the Poly (we valet-parked when we went to 'Ohana) so we got in a fairly long resort-monorail line. We were pleasantly surprised that it took less than 30 minutes to get to the Poly. But it was after 11:30 by then, and we were getting seriously hungry since our non-filling meal at 'Ohana was fading into the distant past by this time.

We were afraid everything would be closed by the time we got to CSR, so when we got off the monorail, we went down to Captain Cook's to see if any food was still available. The kitchen was closed so no hot food, but they still had one cash register open (by the bakery counter.) We looked in the cold case, and found a reasonable looking turkey sandwich on wheat bread. Although the sandwich had a packaged cookie in it, the clerk told us we also got a dessert & drink with a counter service credit so we opted for a bottled water & a Dole whip for dessert. This sandwich was fresh and delicious (fresher than the 'Ohana bread!) We were so glad Captain Cook's was still open:

Hubby did a Homer on the Dole Whip machine...he made a total mockery of the self-serve policy by getting "one" Dole Whip cup...that was about a gallon of Dole Whip teetering on the cup. Though we love, love, love these pineapple-flavored, non-dairy-frozen-chemical-concoctions...well, this was just so big, we couldn't finish it.

Don't have the receipt on this meal, but I think the sandwich was around $5 or $6. We used a counter service credit, and it was well worth it.

Well, there was no way we were going to try for hot pastries in a park after our Main Street Bakery disappointment, and since there was a limited supply of bakery items left in the case at Captain Cook's we decided to pick out a couple of items for Sunday breakfast (we had zip bags back in the room so we could keep them airtight.) The giant muffins looked kind of dried out, so we chose two apple pastries...used snack credits to buy them & headed back to CSR for some much needed sleep.

We haven't been to 'Ohana since '03 and it was awful then. I was considering it again for our next trip figuring it had to get better but now you've convinced me to knock it off any future list. Unfortunately we have had the same bad experiences at KONA as well so our only stop at the Poly will be for cocktails.:goodvibes

we were at CSR nov 10-16 and had a great time!!

enjoying your reviews--especially ohana! we ate there on this trip too :rotfl:

it was cold in there. like... really cold!!

Thank you so much for your reviews, I was laughing and feeling bad at the same time. I love the way you told your Ohana story. I have always wanted to try Ohana but my husband thinks its a hype and told me to try a different place...so glad I listen to him and cancelled our ADR, b/c after your review I know I'm not missing anything. Sorry to read that the bake goods at Main street bakery is not the same...my husband loves the cinnamon roll. I read another review that they did not taste the same.

Well, I'm a firm believer in try-it-yourself, but in this case since you've already tried it before I agree: knock it off your list.

So far, we've had good experiences at Kona (breakfast & several dinners)...but even just going for cocktails is great at the Poly...love the atmosphere at that resort. And I know you can get pina colavas everywhere on property now, but I swear they taste better at the Polynesian (maybe the bartenders there give them a little extra kicker:banana:)

CSR sure is a beautiful resort, isn't it? I can see why it's a popular convention resort...has a comfortable feel to it, while still feeling a bit upscale from the other Dis mod resorts.

Hope you had better luck with your food at 'Ohana...at least I hope your food was warmer than the room. I can see having the A/C going full blast in high summer, but mid-November? As soon as the sun went down the outside temp did cool off quite a bit--certainly to the point they did not need frigid indoor temps.

Yup, your hubby is right: it's all hype! Funny thing you mention "hype", because both the hostess who seated us and our main server that night made a point of telling us that 'Ohana is "the best food on property" and the "best food deal of any Disney restaurant" so they know how to toot their own horn, too. Guess 'Ohana might also mean "myth of good food" :rotfl:

Ya know, I think Nicki is one of the people who also experienced the stale & cold cinnamon rolls at MS Bakery (you know, Nicki, AKA "mickeynicki", the official Disboards food porn queen, all hail Queen Nicki!) The one I tried to eat had the same flavor as previous incarnations and was just as large as before: it was just old, cold & stale. I don't think they changed the actual recipe any (well, except for the part that would tell them to throw out the stale rolls & make fresh each morning:rolleyes1)

I have also experienced the Main Street Bakery disappointment. A couple of years ago we had outstanding pastries--especially the cinnamon roll and the cookie ice cream sandwich--from that bakery. When we purchased those same items last May, we were disappointed on all accounts. I can't explain it, but it tastes like they are using different ingredients and nothing tastes fresh. It's off our list now...:sad2:

I really am hoping it's just an unlucky timing issue. We had delicious cinnamon rolls from there in January & May of this year. And again just in September, we bought 3 cinnamon rolls & an apple turnover on our way out of the park...as we were leaving Disney World to head back to our Tampa condo. All 4 bakery items were very warm. We put them in ziplock bags in our cooler for the 2 hour drive home...and enjoyed them the next morning & the morning after that. They were delicious the next day, and just ever-so-slightly getting stale on the 2nd morning - a 10 sec. zap in the microwave restored the soft/gooey goodness. Now all 3 of those purchases were made either in early afternoon or late evening as we were leaving the park so I'm thinking they use up the rolls from the day before first thing in the morning. Then start baking fresh...at least that's how it worked out for us. I know one night we were there right when he brought out a piping hot pan-full of fresh cinnamon rolls--they were so hot the frosting was dripping off & he had to scoop it out of the pan & back on top when he put them on the plate. And in May, we stopped at MS Bakery late one night and had a cinnamon roll while waiting for the lines at the ferry & monorail to clear at park closing...that time the cinnamon roll was fresh-tasting & warm. I'm hoping!
