The skies were darkening, clearly a portent of foreboding doom. The gloomy clouds swirled atop the castle spires as our party searched the hallows below, desperate to find the missing horcruxes before--
Whoops, sorry about that. Wrong theme park.
It
was getting cloudy, though. I didn't make up that part. Upon exiting Cosmic Ray's, a light drizzle started to fall. We all wanted another crack at Buzz Lightyear, so we jogged over for Fast Passes. At this point, the rain started to get a little heavier. This made it a perfect time to see the Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor again. Thank goodness the kids were ok with that.
I won't give too many specifics, but the show had some different acts/gags than our previous trip through the attraction. I was thankful that they vary it like that. Unfortunately, I still didn't get to be "That Guy". Maybe next time. The kids laughed just as much the second time through, so Disney definitely has a keeper here.
It was still raining when we exited, but luckily our Fast Passes for Buzz were ready to be used. We jumped right into our cars, ready to kick some honeybuns to infinity and beyond.
I think I still need some practice. I improved my score to 196,900, but again 100,000 of that was from the Rock-'em Sock-'em robot in the first room. I knew I was supposed to hit the top of the volcano in one room, but just missed it. Dave rode with me and scored a modest 20,000 or so. Once again, I complimented him on his accuracy, even though there were no statistics to back it up this time.
Outside, it had stopped raining. Buzz was available for pictures, so we got in line. I don't know if we give off a certain vibe or what, but it seemed like every time we got in line to see characters, they would go off on their "break" right when we got up to the front of the line. I was pretty sure I put on deodorant every morning, too, so I don't kno what the problem was. Our luck held out, and Buzz went on break just as we got to the head of the line. Thankfully, it was just a few short minutes.
Having accomplished pretty much everything in Tomorrowland that we wanted to do, we decided to make the trek to Frontierland for another crack at Big Thunder Mountain. Along the way, we happened upon some beautiful gardens and a great big castle. Can you believe it? A castle, right in the middle of the Magic Kingdom! Has anyone ever seen this before? We figured it must be another one of those hidden gems Disney is so famous for. We felt fortunate to have discovered it on our own.
This one is going on the Christmas card, for sure:
We moved quickly across the park and eventually made it to the Wildest Ride in the West. As we moved up the path, we saw this:
Which, of course, we hadn't ridden yet. I'm not a huge fan of the drop, but I have survived it multiple times with minimal scarring. So, we asked the kids if they wanted to go. Sarah had ridden it when she was 4 and liked it, so we figured it would be a no-brainer.
Nobody wanted to try it. I asked Sarah why not, and she said, "It looks a lot bigger than I remembered it."
"You sure? You rode it before."
"Maybe next time."
I know what you're thinking--it's time for the Parents of the Year to step in and force the kids to overcome their fear, right? Dude, I'm not suffering through a 50-foot drop if I don't have to. On to the roller coaster!
Only Dave and Sarah wanted to ride Thunder Mountain again. Not wanting to be the Family With The Screaming Kid again, we let Scotty opt out and asked the CM if we could do a child swap. She told us that switching both adults and kids wasn't technically how it was supposed to work, but she'd let us do it just this once.
Sarah and Julie went first, and I positioned myself with the boys to get some of the most awe-inspiring Thunder Mountain pictures of all time. That was when Scotty announced he had to go to the bathroom, which was way the heck over by Splash Mountain. No pictures. Sigh.
We finished our task and met up with Julie and Sarah at the exit, and then I got in the Fast Pass line with Dave. Dave was very excited about this ride, having experienced it once. And we had a great time. Julie even got some pictures. I'm the dorky guy in the yellow t-shirt waving.
David declared this to be his "favorite" ride, along with Test Track and Mission: Space. I consider this a success.
Now, Julie and Sarah had to go to the bathroom. Obviously, we need to go back to Bathroom Trip Coordination 101 before our next vacation. We hung around in the Splash Mountain gift shop while waiting for them. That was when the heavens opened up. Suddenly, people we pouring into the gift shop from everywhere. I have no idea what the fire marshal set as the maximum capacity for that little store, but we were way over. Every available inch of space was filled. One thing for sure--we were all going to be a lot thinner.
Somehow, Julie found us in that crowd. We waited 10 long minutes. We managed to fight our way to the door, where I could gauge the rain. It was a Florida shower, and I didn't think the heavy stuff would come down for another couple of hours yet. In fact, I thought it might be letting up. We finally decided that getting a little wet was better than being squished, just like a grape. So we hit the road. Thankfully, the shower stopped moments later.
Even though we were wet, it was still 90-plus degrees. I heard the siren song calling. You know what it was. I shouldn't even have to tell you where we went next.
Ah, Dole Whip. I have been, and always shall be your friend.
Our reverie was broken by the sound of thunder. And you know what that means. The Dreaded Lightning Delay.
The CM's went to work immediately, closing off all of the outdoor attractions. I asked the CM at the Jungle Cruise what the policy was, and he said they had to wait 20 minutes before they were clear to open again. So, the options suddenly became limited.
We had wanted to take the kids to see the Animal Kingdom Lodge at some point on the trip, and debated taking them over there. But with many people streaming out of the park at that point, we decided it would be better not to take the long bus ride and instead wait it out. Figuring the Haunted Mansion and Fantasyland would be mobbed, we decided to trek back to Tomorrowland to ride Scotty's favorite ride in the whole wide world:
The Peoplemover.
Hey, if you're tired and rides are closed and you need to relax, you could do a lot worse. Scotty considered this HIS rollercoaster, so we played along. Here, the kids pretend they're screaming around the corner as we played with the shutter speed to make it look like the Speeding Peoplemover Of Doom.
We got to the end, and nothing was open yet. Our situation had not improved. So, we took another spin. Scotty was in Peoplemover Heaven, where they never stop paging Mr. Tom Morrow.
Evening was approaching, and we still had some souvenir shopping to do before dinner. We hit the Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe in Liberty Square, bought out the store, and then went for Main St. We got this picture on the way:
I needed to get a Christmas gift for Julie, so she took Scotty out to get some pictures and see if there were any characters out on Main St. while the rest of us shopped.
As Julie and Scotty wandered, they suddenly stopped cold. Scotty was immediately entranced: Naked Chip and Dale were here.
I still maintain that Chip and Dale are 2 of the best characters for interaction. They were all over Scotty's Naked Chip and Dale dolls--grabbing them, playing with them, pointing at each other, etc. They played up amusement at having dolls that looked just like them. As you can see, Scotty hated it.
Julie did a great job with this shot:
It was nearing the end of the day. We had reservations at Tony's Town Square Restaurant, so we hung around the area, wandering through stores and taking pictures. Julie caught this one of me and Sarah, and while it's a little out of focus, it's one of my favorites from the trip. I can only hope she's still looking at me like this as she grows up:
I think it's safe to say that someone was enjoying the trip. If only I didn't look like I'd just coughed up a hairball in that picture. Oh well. It's probably safe to say that people don't look at these pictures just to see my dashing figure.
Coming Up Next: Dinner and a show at Tony's. And do we really have to go home tomorrow? Already?
