A thought for the Day

When they have grown and flown the nest they won't remember whether the house was clean and tidy but they will remember whether you had time for them. Cherish them always.

My foster mother told me this when I was a young child and I have never forgotten it.

Frances Louise Anne Freeman 1933-2002 (her daughter)
May they both Rest in Peace

Resilience

The best thing to do when the worst thing happens is to begin moving forward again. The real essence of strength is in resilience. Drawing upon and exercising such strength will make it grow ever stronger. Make the commitment to bounce back and you end up at an even higher level, an even stronger position than before.
It is indeed difficult to begin going forward when your world has just been devastated. Yet time and time again, people do, and as they move persistently ahead, the world does too.

The resilience of a positive purpose knows no defeat, for each setback serves to move it forward. It requires much effort and sacrifice, yet it is worth the cost. For with resilience we steadily rise above higher and higher levels of challenge. With resilience we move our lives beyond our fears, and forge ahead in the direction of the best we can be.

On this day especially, consider the power of resilience. And do what must be done to move yourself and your world positively and lovingly forward.

The positive side

The negative things in life don't need your help. They can do just fine on their own. Give your energy to the positive side of life. For that is where you can truly make a difference.
That is where you can create value, for yourself, for those you know, and even for those you will never meet. Stop for a moment and let the thought sink in of how truly fulfilling that could be.

Whining, complaining, fighting and feuding are strategies that mainly serve to consume themselves along with those who practice them. Seek instead to build, to create, to love, appreciate, encourage and grow.

On the surface, it may seem that living on the positive side of life is simplistic and naive. Yet those who do live there know better. For the positive side is the place where life's true richness can be found.

Dan, I love that! Thank you. :)

GEORGE CARLIN, POST 9-11 (His wife recently died...)
Isn't it Amazing that George Carlin - mouthy comedian of the 70's and 80's - could write something so very eloquent, and so very appropriate post 9-11.

A wonderful Message by George Carlin:

The paradox of our time in history is that we have taller buildings but shorter tempers, wider freeways, but narrower viewpoints. We spend more, but have less, we buy more, but enjoy less. We have bigger houses and smaller families, more conveniences, but less time.

We have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgment, more experts,
yet more problems, more medicine, but less wellness.

We drink too much, smoke too much, spend too recklessly, laugh too little, drive too fast, get too angry, stay up too late, get up too tired, read too little, watch TV too much, and pray too seldom.

We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too
seldom, and hate too often. We've learned how to make a living, but not a life.

We've added years to life not life to years. We've been all the way to the moon and back,
but have trouble crossing the street to meet a new neighbor. We conquered outer space but not inner space.

We've done larger things, but not better things. We've cleaned up the air, but polluted the soul.
We've conquered the atom, but not our prejudice. We write more, but learn less.
We plan more, but accomplish less. We've learned to rush, but not to wait.

We build more computers to hold more information, to produce more copies than ever,
but we communicate less and less.

These are the times of fast foods and slow digestion, big men and small character, steep profits and shallow relationships. These are the days of two incomes but more divorce, fancier houses, but broken homes.

These are days of quick trips, disposable diapers, throwaway morality, one night stands, overweight bodies, and pills that do everything from cheer, to quiet, to kill. It is a time when there is much in the showroom window and nothing in the stockroom.

A time when technology can bring this letter to you, and a time when you can choose either to share this insight,
or to just hit delete.

* Remember, spend some time with your loved ones, because they are not going to be around forever.

* Remember, say a kind word to someone who looks up to you in awe, because that little person soon
will grow up and leave your side.

* Remember, to give a warm hug to the one next to you, because that is the only treasure you can give
with your heart and it doesn't cost a cent.

* Remember, to say, "I love you" to your spouse and your loved ones, but most of all mean it. A kiss
and an embrace will mend hurt when it comes from deep inside of you.

* Remember to hold hands and cherish the moment for someday that person will not be there again.
Give time to love, give time to speak, and give time to share the precious thoughts in your mind.

AND ALWAYS REMEMBER: Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the
moments that take our breath away.

George Carlin

S.M., I have read that message from Geoge Carlin many times and I have always loved it. A lot of great things in there, thanks for sharing it. :)

Life isn't a popularity contest. For those who think that it is, you need to look in the mirror. You are only unique, independent and yourself when you want to be. It makes no sense to go galloping around being someone you're not. Because then, to everyone else, a question is aroused... WHO ARE YOU? When you like yourself and who you are.... life is no longer going to be a popularity contest... and everyone accepts and likes everyone else's world.

You know, I was just thinking today how much I missed this thread popping up almost every day... thank you all for the wonderful thoughts shared here :)

If you woke up this morning
with more health than illness,
you are more blessed than the
million who won't survive the week.

If you have never experienced
the danger of battle,
the loneliness of imprisonment,
the agony of torture or
the pangs of starvation,
you are ahead of 20 million people
around the world.

If you attend a church meeting
without fear of harassment,
arrest, torture, or death,
you are more blessed than almost
three billion people in the world.

If you have food in your refrigerator,
clothes on your back, a roof over
your head and a place to sleep,
you are richer than 75% of this world.

If you have money in the bank,
in your wallet, and spare change
in a dish someplace, you are among
the top 8% of the world's wealthy.

If your parents are still married and alive,
you are very rare,
especially in the United States.

If you hold up your head with a smile
on your face and are truly thankful,
you are blessed because the majority can,
but most do not.

If you can hold someone's hand, hug them
or even touch them on the shoulder,
you are blessed because you can
offer God's healing touch.

If you can read this message,
you are more blessed than over
two billion people in the world
that cannot read anything at all.

You are so blessed in ways
you may never even know

Alive with enthusiasm

What would it take to get you bubbling with enthusiasm about this day? What would it take to make you positively excited about all the possibilities available to you?
Think about it, and as you do, those thoughts will give birth to a very real and undeniable enthusiasm within you. Enthusiasm lives and grows and makes its presence felt in your mind, so by all means welcome it to come in and let it stay.

What happens when you have real excitement and enthusiasm for who you are, for what you're doing, for the positive possibilities in life? You find a way to enthusiastically make the best of those possibilities real.

Start by putting a great big, sincere smile on your face. That will do amazing things to your level of enthusiasm. Sure it sounds simple and silly, but there's one important thing to remember. It works.

Get up, get excited, get enthusiastic about this day, about your life, about the possibilities. And you'll soon have plenty of undeniable reasons to be truly excited.

-- Ralph Marston

Wow! Haven't seen this thread in a while! Thanks for bumping!

And while it's here, I'd like to recommend the book, "The Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren. It is a wonderful book and it speaks to the way we can turn away from the things George Carlin was writing about.

A wonderful speech by Carlin and a wonderful book by Warren.

What you make of it

The difference between a dreary day and a beautiful one is mainly in what you make of it. The difference between an impassable obstacle and a golden opportunity is primarily in what you make of it.
Each experience is largely raw and unformed until you actually experience it. Each circumstance, each encounter with life is yours to make of it what you will.

Your attitude is the filter through which the moments of your life are seen and known and valued. What gets through to you and what does not, is largely up to you.

Life can be filled with unfairness and misery, or it can be full of invigorating challenge and opportunities for achievement. So much depends on how you take it, on what you make of what comes your way.

Some have been blessed with every advantage, and end up with nothing to show for it all. Others have been saddled with unimaginable burdens, and yet have risen to magnificent heights.

As this day plays out, whatever the moments may bring, make the choice to look first for the positive possibilities. This day, this moment, this life is what you make of it.

Remember why

If you could do anything, what would it be? And even more importantly, why would you choose to do it?
Just for a moment, imagine that there are no limitations, no obstacles to get in your way. If you could create something just by willing it into being, what would it be, and why?

You've probably complained to yourself or others about how hard it is to get ahead. Have you ever considered in detail how you would know when you got there, and what you would do with your good fortune?

Look beyond the daily onslaught of problems and concerns. Look ahead to where you'd like for it all to get you.

Remember why you've chosen the path that you are on. Remember why, and resolve anew to make it all worthwhile, to fully live the meaning that is certainly there.

Let your mind, your spirit rise above the clamor. You'll surely get where you choose to go when you regularly remember why.
