A thought about spelling

Wouldn't it be wonderful if the DIS were able to allow us to go in and correct other posters spelling? I keep reading the same wrong words from people so I know they aren't simple typos. Seeing some of the words is making me crazy today! :rotfl:

I'm not perfect and make plenty of spelling mistakes myself and wouldn't be the least bit offended if someone corrected mine.
I've seen similar spelled *simular* 3 times today and I think this is what set me off on this rant. So sorry if I'm offending anyone. :cutie:

:flower3:

:thumbsup2

The one that drives me up a wall is "loose" when "lose" should be used.

Yep saw that one today as well......and yep, I cringed when I saw it. LOL

(I hadn't seen any complaints about spelling today so I thought I'd post one. My day isn't complete if I don't read at ONE thread on spelling mishaps! LOL)

I'd like that, but then what if someone came and changed my spelling to the wrong thing? If someone changed my "voila" to "viola" or "wa-la" I'm afraid my head would explode. ;)

"dinning" is NOT A WORD! Or if it is and I'm unaware of it, I KNOW that it's not "dining"!

You're not offending me! The copy editor in me gets irritated at the you're/ your, too/ to/ two, and there/ their/ they're confusion, along with other random things. When DH wants to annoy me via text, he says, "Supposably their more better."

I wish I understood why this bugs some people so much. Spelling and grammar, for me, represent a certain artistic flair. In fact, I sometimes use inappropriate spelling on purpose because properly spelled words just don't get the pizazz I want. Words can be so bland, so flat, so utterly without character, sometimes it's nice to see someone jazz them up which makes me think of the word in terms of phonetics, maybe the spelling will even cause me to read it with an added an accent. Shakespeare made it a habit to make up words as he went along an since I'm a huge fan of his I kind of like it in others :thumbsup2

Now when I am reading an article or something professional it will bug the crud out of me but in general conversation, like here, I like it:goodvibes:thumbsup2

My favorite happening is when people splice 2 words together and make another non-word, non formally recognized word I guess I should say. Now an old friend of mine actually had a name for that, which I don't remember but those words are fantastic..... love 'em. One of my all time favorites was the exclamation, "I just can't stand the torturement!" Torture + excitement = torturement.

I like it when it's done in fun. A friend and I will joke about voila/viola and occasionally even say "cello!" just to be silly. But generally you can tell when it's done out of ignorance, laziness, or apathy, and that bugs me.

::yes:: When people start threads on the Restaurants board titled "Help me with my dinning reservations!" that isn't for artistic flair and it drives me nuts.

Those drive me crazy, too, as well as 'dinning' and 'an' for 'and' - see my signature! :)

If it's done like a malapropism, that's art. Inventing a new word for intent, that's genius. Shakespeare was a genius.

Just spelling it incorrectly ... NOT. The difference is miles apart.

I would have no choice than to cut off his access to texting. LOL LOL

Oh no I understand that completely that's why when I rarely complain about spelling. In fact I've done it on purpose myself at times but like a previous poster said it's the your/you're, to/too, they're/their...those words that should have been learned in school that really drive me batty.

I recently read a blog by a young school teacher, a very sweet girl but she hasn't a clue about the you/your, to/too stuff. How did she get her teaching degree without knowing that simple stuff? Seriously. :confused3

Actually, you CAN edit. Just quote somebody's post and hack away at those spelling errors!

I was reading something today online (NOT on the Disboards) about the Dunns River Falls in Jamaica. The person was saying that if you didn't bring water shoes with you, you could get a "pear" for $5.

Oh boy.

.

ALOT = A LOT
I SEEN = I HAVE SEEN... seen needs a helping verb! lol! I hear this A LOT being in the south LOL!
