Hey all! DH and I have a trip planned for 11/30-12/4. A job opportunity has arisen for DH very suddenly and aside from the whole "If I get it, do I ask for this time off so soon?" question, we're not sure what to do IF we choose to cancel.

We've got 45 points tied up at BWV and if we cancel by Oct 30, they'll be restored to our March UY BUT, can they still be banked, seeing as how our next trip isn't until June '08? My guides are out-of-date and of course, the DVC site is down and I can't find the new banking guidelines. I thought it was that you can bank ALL your points until 4 months before the end of the UY which would give us until 11/30. I seem to recall reading something like "four before" Of course, if we cancel after Oct 30, we've got holding account junk to deal with. We'll start that thread if it happens.....

Can someone who knows this off the top of their head help out????

Also, what would YOU do if you were faced with the "new job/vacation" dilemma. We've had this planned since March and it's all happening so fast, we don't know the right thing to do.......

I believe the "old" banking rules are in effect right now, so you would be dealing with the 50% banking rule at this moment. I would simply cancel & bank now if there's a chance you won't be traveling just to be on the safe side.

Good luck!

If you only have 90 points, you could still bank the 45 since they are 50% of the total. Call DVC tomorrow or at least by 31 days out, cancel and bank.

100% up to 6 months out.
50% 7-8 months out.
25% 8-10 months out.
Nothing in the last two months. Until 1/1/08 when it changes to 100% up to 8 months out. Nothing after that.

Agree with jarestel and Deb - AFAIK, we are under the old banking rules until at least January 1, 2008. In fact, the new rules may not take effect until the 2008 use year starts - not sure we have a solid answer on that.

But anyway, if 45 points is less than 50% of your annual allotment, you can bank the points as long as you cancel at least 31 days in advance.

My advice - see if your DH is willing to mention the vacation when he is offered the position. Sometimes, employers/new supervisors are OK with previously scheduled vacations as long as it is mentioned in advance.

If it will be a problem (say for example, training or important meetings are scheduled), your DH can always tell them he will cancel it. Of course this assumes he gets the offer before the 31 day mark. If not, I'd cancel the vacation, bank and cross my fingers that he gets the offer. Good job opportunities come around a lot less often than opportunities for a DVC vacation, LOL.

Good luck - hope he gets it!

Until January 1, 2008 , the current "old" rules apply. You should probably call MS for an "official" policy, but I would suggest banking as many points as you can now and pushing for the new policy to allow the remainder in January.

While no explanation has been offered, I'm pretty certain that the new "8 months" policy will be effective immediately in January and will not come into effect with each Use Year during 2008 - so you should be fine.

Please let us know what you decide.

(BTW- I think I'd ask the new employer to allow the planned vacation. If the answer is "No" then ask MS for help."

DH had 2nd interview w/new company and it went well. He's really interested in the job however his present employer caught wind that he was interviewing and told him to "keep them posted" on what they offer b/c they might be able to match it. It seems the new company is stealing employees from the other and HR is trying to stem the flow! :-)

So....news is that it's still up in the air. I thought briefly about possibly renting out the 2 night ressie but not sure if I could on such short notice....

Hoping it all works out!

Mentioning planned vacations is very common when taking a new job. It usually isn't a problem. I'd mention the vacation when he gets the offer and I would NOT cancel it if he doesn't get the offer before the 30 day mark. Never count your chickens before they are hatched. If the offer comes after that point I'd be sure saying I had a vacation that could not be canceled without losing the cost. I can't imagine a new boss expecting you to lose the cost of a vacation planned so soon to taking a new job. I know I wouldn't expect it.

YOu didn't ask for advice about the job hunt, but I'd throw in that it rarely works out when an employee gets another job offer and then turns it down because the old company matches it. Loyalty is always in quesiton after that point and the employee usually ends up leaving anyway in the near future.

Think about it... why does your husband's employer need him to have another job offer before they'll consider paying him more if they think now that he is worth more?

My DVC Guide said that the new rule of "8 months to bank up to 100% and no banking the last 120 days of your UY" goes into effect on 1/1/08 for everyone.

Someone had written MS and got a reply and posted it. Don't remember what thread it was in thought.

Essentially the new rule goes into effect 1/1/08 for everyone, regardless of use year month.

Bottom line: Use the current rules up through 12/31/07. This means that 100%, 50%, and 25% windows still apply.

After 1/1/08 use a 100% 8-month window only, whether it's for your 2007 use year or 2008 use year.

Some interesting things happen.

1. Anyone with a use year month prior to an April UY will be under the current system for all their 2007 UY points.

2. An April UY can bank 100% by the end of September (too late now), 50% by the end of December. Normally they would have been able to bank 25% during the month of January, but the new cutoff reverts to Nov so they can not bank in January at all. Effectively their last banking date for their 2007 points becomes 12/31/07.

3. A June UY actually retrogrades. They can bank 100% through the end of November, up to 50% in December, but in January are back into a 100% banking window. They do lose February's previous 25% window.

4. Use years August or later simply have 8-months for a 100% banking window. Thus an August UY has through March to bank 100%

And if they do without a really good cause (major opening, project etc) then think long and hard.

I took my current job with a two week vacation to Europe planned. When they made the offer I told them about the vacation, they were fine. I had already decided that if they weren't it told me a lot about thier "committment" to the "work life balance" and that I wasn't taking the job. If this short of a vacation is a crisis then what happens when DH wants a week???

I also recently turned down a job where I had also warned them I had a vacation coming up, once again the vacation was not an issue. (The pay etc was LOL!)

UPDATE!! (Kinda) DH hasn't heard a peep from his interview. He's resigned himself to the fact he didn't get the job. I'm really disappointed for him; he wanted really bad after meeting the people and seeing the office campus.

So, I guess the trip's back on but I told him I feel kind of guilty. He said "yeah, you might feel guilty on the plane ride but you'll perk up once you get to the hotel...."

Don't give up the ship just yet. You'd be amazed at how many companies leave job hunters hanging (for weeks!) because things came up, some decision maker went on vacation, etc. DS applied for a job at a very large to-remain-unnamed computer company. He went 2 MONTHS with no word and assumed he didn't get it. Turns out they just misplaced the paperwork, and he eventually got hired.

Okay! Final update! Short version is: Trip is STILL ON!!!! :cool1: :cool1:

Hubby received an offer from new company, went to his boss with it and was presented w/a counter offer that was so out of this world, we'd be crazy not to take it! So, DH is not leaving current company and we get to go to WDW and get a huge raise to boot! :yay: :cheer2:

Pixie dust for everyone!

Congratulations on the RAISE!!! Enjoy your trip, we will be at the BWV 11/29 to 12/7.
