A Secret about the Secret Porthole Rooms!

Since we are in the midst of spring cleaning/remodeling, hubby has been cleaning out his office and discovered a trove of old DCL stuff...including one of the original brochures that was issued before the Magic even sailed. He looked up the secret porthole rooms and, lo and behold: They were originally category 8!! I wonder how long that lasted. Interesting to see the original prices and photos too...Animators has the fiber optic paintbrushes that the servers used to parade around with. There are no photos of Castaway Cay, just a drawn map and a photo of a couple running around in a picture of surf (which I suspect was taken at some generic beach...CC was probably still being readied). It even says "Sailing early 1998" (I remember that we were originally booked for Memorial Day weekend and were bumped to Labor Day due to the ship not being ready). Amazing to look at it and think that we have been on 20 Disney cruises since I first saw it!

When I made my reservation, the lady at DCl said "OOOH, good choice. You know those used to be category 8 rooms??" Now your memorabelia confirms this.

We were originally scheduled to sail in mid May of that year and had to change to Sept. We asked for a refund and Disney offered a $500 price break to keep our ressies but change dates. We jumped at it and have been hooked ever since.
You mention the fiber optic brushes. Do you remember the squirt bottles they would bring out with dessert? They were filled with different colored sauces and you could decorate your Mickey ice cream. On the second cruise, 7 months later, they had discontinued this practice. Our server said that some children and adults took to decorating each other and the room with the sauces.
Ah, memories.

We were booked on the Maiden Voyage of the Magic that was supposed to sail in March of '98. It was then pushed back to May of '98 and then we finally sailed July 30, 1998.

After the second Disney date change I wrote a letter and complained. We had to change our vacation three times and it was not easy. We had to rebook airfare with penalties. Disney was very understanding and paid for our airline penalties and even threw in a free night at the Hyatt at the Airport since we were coming in the night before.

When we returned home we had a letter from Disney with 50% coupons for us to use on another Disney cruise. We have sailed 5 times since them with #6 on 8/3/02 and #7 on 7/19/03.

It is definitely additcting. On the Maiden Voyage there was no cruise staff...just a D.J. There was nothing to do at night. Disney finally has their sea legs.!!!!!
