A Question for Boston Area DISers.

We are going to be in the Boston area Oct 6-11th and were wondering where the best place to stay would be thats close to the airport and transportation to the best place to see. Also some good places to sightsee without car. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

We have always stayed downtown. They have all the typical chains, Westin, Marriott, etc.

We're flying into Logan the 6th heading to Gloucester for a cousins wedding and were flying out the 11th.

You're a very short cab ride from Logan to downtown and the waterfront. I highly recommend NOT having a car in town as they are still wreaking HAVOC with traffic and driving with the Big Dig.

How will you be getting out to Gloucester (btw cograts on the correct spelling ) for the wedding. The North Shore where you will is really pretty and picturesque. (Rockport, Salem, Cape Ann, etc). There is lots to do and see up there (I am a South Shore girl, but there are other North Shore folks about)

What are you most interested in seeing? That will help narrow it down for advice. It will be Columbus Day weekend I think, so it is liable to be busy.

We reserved a room at a B&B in Manchester-By-the-Sea. We wanted to be close to Salem and also Gloucester. Any Lighthouses close?

If you get to stay in Boston you might want to try a Duck Tour - lots of fun and you get to see a lot of sights. New England is beautiful that time of year.

Just make sure she does not get her heart set on any of them down the Cape (way far away from where you will be). After I get settled in, I can run through it quickly, and tell you which ones are up on the N. Shore.

Also, the ones with the greyed out backgrounds are no longer with us.

A day trip into Boston...check out Faneuil Hall (aka Quincy Market), the North End (Italian section...food galore!), the New England Aquarium/IMAX Theater, Harvard Square. a terrific theater district with great plays, musicals, and of course Blue Man Group!! (a *must* see!!) Cape Cod would be a nice day trip...that's a large area so I'd do a bit of research first! Rockport, as mentioned by someone else is a *great* daytrip!! Salem (witches) is nearby too! It's also close to peak foliage season...absolutely gorgeous here in MA...check out the Berkshires or Southern NH for some beautiful color!! Holy cow, I think the only ones that actually sound like that are the Kennedy's! I didn't read your original post close enough...some of these things you wouldn't be able to do without a car, but some you would. Anyway, have fun planning!

Could you possibly be Boston Rob from Survivor, in disguise?? Have a great time. Boston in Oct is beautiful. Walk the Freedom Trail, do a Duck Tour. Visit the Museum of Fine Arts. So much great stuff to do.

www.mbta.com is the Mass transit site. Check out the commuter rail as it has service from the North Shore into North Station (The Fleet Center). You're within walking distance or a subway ride to everything.

Also, if you are visiting in October, you should check out Salem, Mass for their haunted happenings, www.salemhauntedhappenings.com . Located not too far from Manchester and also on the commuter rail.
