A practically perfect DVC HHI beach trip with a side order of ghosts & drag queens

Love the photo tour!

Ahhhhhh, your day the beach sounds heavenly :cloud9: When I finished reading your update I looked over at Don and told him I needed a beach vacation. He said there wasn't one close and he'd take me to the lake instead - yeah, soooooo not the same :sad2:
Yeah you are right so not the same. You tried!:rotfl:

Awesome updates! I've been looking for myself or one of us in your pics...LOL! Y'all ate at some really cool places that we didn't even hear of! Glad you enjoyed your day at the beach. And I enjoyed seeing pics of the inside of the beach house...we never took the time to walk in there the day that we were over, so I wandered what it looked like! Can't wait to read more!
I've been going to Hilton Head off & on for years so I have definetly developed favorite restaurants. The beach house is really nice-you'll have to go back so you can spend some time there.

Loved the update Melanie! You took some great pics. I love all of the signs. You really documented all of the special touches that Disney puts out there. I hope you didn't work too hard this past weekend :)
Thanks Andrea!!!!! To me the special touches are what makes Disney the best at what they do. It was busy this past weekend but I survived.

Loved your photo walking tour :thumbsup2

Are the beach chairs and umbrellas provided to use? Is there a fee?

Did you bring your own bath bomb? Now THAT is a smart idea! :thumbsup2:goodvibes

We brought our own chairs & umbrella but you can rent them too. I think 1st day is 30$ & then it's 18$ but they take them up @ 5pm.

Brought my own bath bomb :woohoo: cause I knew we would have the big tub! Pretty smart if I do say so myself. :teeth:

Worked another 12 today---hopefully an update tomorrow.

Once again we got up about 8:15 & ate breakfast in the room. We had signed up for a marsh ecology walk so we had to over by the pool by 9. The first order of business was putting on waders so we could walk through the muck.
IMG_2728.jpg

They have a couple of ecologists on staff & she took us out into the marsh area. We walked out over all this dead reed looking material called cord grass & looked at some unique plants along the way. There was one called oxeye that is a protected plant in South Carolina. It is at the edge of the marsh & helps stabilize the marsh. It is the scrubby looking plant past the grasses along the edge of the marsh.
IMG_2729.jpg

There was another plant called pickle weed that you can eat if you get lost in the marsh. She had us break a piece off & taste it & it really does taste like a pickle.
IMG_2732.jpg

We also saw tons of little periwinkle snails. They are called that because their shells used to be ground up to make blue dye. Really interesting because they have no visible blue on them at all.
IMG_2731.jpg

As we walked along the edge, we saw tons of little fiddler crabs, but as we got over towards the canal area there were much bigger ones.
IMG_2735.jpg

Also saw a blue heron fishing.
IMG_2737-1.jpg

More crabs & a bit of video of the fiddlers on the beach waving their big claw at us. They have one big claw & one small one-if the big claw falls off from injury etc. then the other claw grows into a big one.
IMG_2744.jpg

IMG_2745.jpg

Looking back at the resort across the marsh.
IMG_2748.jpg

And a cute little bird hanging out.
IMG_2750.jpg

The piece of information that sticks out the most in my memory is "a smelly marsh is a healthy marsh.":rotfl:
We enjoyed our marsh walk. It was fun to walk around in the squishy mud. When we were finished, we walked out the fishing pier to see if we could see any more animals. There was a blue heron hanging out right by the pier.
IMG_2751.jpg

There was a guy fishing there & he would occasionally throw the bird a piece of bait. Pretty smart bird to hang around there huh?
In this picture you can see some oysters too which we learned about on our marsh walk.
IMG_2754.jpg

IMG_2755.jpg

This bird was taking a bath...not sure how murky water gets you clean but it must work for him.
IMG_2759.jpg

IMG_2760.jpg

Before too long, I noticed some fins & we were treated to seeing some dolphins in the channel playing & fishing.
IMG_2763.jpg

IMG_2773.jpg

I took some video & if you go to about 2:00 minutes you will see them splashing around.

So after our wild kindgom like adventures, we went back to the room. On our way back we say B'lou Crabbe & Shadow as they were taking lots of kids on a funny bunny hunt.
IMG_2776.jpg

When we got back to the room, we rested for a bit & then decided to go into Sea Pines. Sea Pines is really the first area of Hilton Head that was a planned development. It is my favorite plantation on HH & it is where we usually stay if we are not using DVC points. You have to pay 5$ to get into Sea Pines if you aren't staying there, so we only went once this trip. We drove down to South Beach where we usually stay. This is where the Salty Dog Cafe is. We ate lunch at the Wreck of the Salty Dog. We had a lovely table overlooking the marina & Broad Creek.
080.jpg

I had a shrimp salad sandwich & a cup of she crab soup. Yummo.
081.jpg

After lunch, we had to do our shopping at the Salty Dog. We both got a new hat, bought Bella a new water bowl & some treats. They have these gerat macaws there in South Beach too. They are so colorful & they are fun to watch.
083.jpg

086.jpg

Cont in next post.

Next up, we rented bikes to ride. We love riding on the bike trails on HHI & especially in Sea Pines as alot of the paths are nice & shady which makes for nice cool riding.
090.jpg

We rode to Harbour Town & got off to enjoy walking around there.
IMG_2786.jpg

IMG_2787.jpg

IMG_2788.jpg

We sat in some rocking chairs & enjoyed a much needed cold bottle of water after riding. We also browsed in some of the shops. I found the biggest hat I have ever seen.
088.jpg

We walked around behind the lighthouse & saw all these horseshoe crabs in the water which was really unusual.
IMG_2793.jpg

Then, we hopped back on our bikes.
IMG_2797.jpg

We finally saw an alligator.
IMG_2796.jpg

We rode for a good while & then headed back to South Beach to turn the bikes back in & to have an ice cream from the Salty Dog.
091.jpg

We also walked over & took a long walk on South Beach & saw some birds.
094.jpg

We really enjoyed our time in Sea Pines. We headed back to the resort after our very active day & spent some time just relaxing in the room. It had been a really hot day & so the AC felt pretty good.
We decided to just walk over the bridge to Shelter Cove for dinner at Scott's Fish Market.
097.jpg

We both had some really good teriyaki mahi mahi & shared a key lime pie for dessert.
098.jpg

By the time we were finished with dinner, it was heading towards sunset time, so we walked back over to the pier to watch it. There was a campfire going on too & it was pretty funny listening to the kids & parents having fun doing silly sing alongs. This was one that actually we used to do when I was a cheerleader in high school.

We browsed in the shop before watching the sunset & I found a hidden Mickey.
IMG_2832.jpg

Then it was all about the sunset. The colors were breath taking & the fish were jumping in the water & all seemed right with the world.
IMG_2805.jpg

IMG_2806.jpg

IMG_2808.jpg

IMG_2816.jpg

IMG_2818.jpg

IMG_2821.jpg

It always amazes me how fast it goes down once it starts going.
Walking back to the room, the sky was gorgeous.
IMG_2840.jpg

And I was able to capture what I feel might be the quintessential SC picture.
IMG_2839.jpg

We spent the rest of the night, in the room reading, relaxing & enjoying an adult beverage.

Another wonderful day......

Up next.....Breakfast, a dog's tales & beachin it

Wow it really looks so peaceful down there. I hope I can make it down one day.

I love the dolphins! You saw a lot of sea life. Neat! :goodvibes

Loving your report. A bowl of she-crab soup from Salty Dog-yummy! The first time I had it, DH was the only one who ordered it and I tried a taste. Well, my eyes lit up so much that DH immediately flagged down the waiter and said, "Bring her her own!" Yes, I loved it. And I always love buying ice cream at the little stand at Salty Dog.
Yes, the resort truly is, as you say, a "bird lovers paradise". We're bird watchers, and the main reason we go to HHI every fall is for birding. And we're never disappointed. Unfortunately, though, we haven't figured out how to get from Salty Dog to South Beach. We always encounter a "Private area" sign. But we see lots of birds elsewhere, and around the resort.

I love all of your pictures. It sounds like a perfect day! When we went to the beach last week we had encounters with crabs. One freaked Brian out because all of the sudden it popped up on our beach blanket.

How exciting that you got to see the dolphins!

Love your sunset pics - so pretty :goodvibes

We did see lots of wildlife. HHI is one of my favorite places to relax.

I am so jonesing for a bowl of that She-crab soup. You can walk on up the street from the Salty Dog past a few of the condos & there is a public park/beach access if you want to try that next time. We love walking on South Beach.

It was really a perfect day!!!! Crabs that close would freak me out too.
P.S. I like your ticker!!!!

The sunsets were amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hope to have an update tomorrow.

It took a while to finally find a ticker that would work! We are actually staying off property for a week and then on property for 3 nights. Instead of Savannah on the way back we are thinking St. Augustine!

This morning when we got up we headed for our favorite breakfast spot on HHI-Signe's. It is a really cute little spot & they have wonderful baked goods & a case full of other great looking things like salad, etc. We will have to go there to try lunch sometime.
100.jpg

I think Signe likes chickens.
101.jpg

This is what we got for breakfast-blackberry french toast with the best sausage I have ever eaten in my life.
102.jpg

After stuffing ourselves with a delicious breakfast, we went to the Beach House & took a very long walk on the beach. It was beautiful out with a lovely breeze. I don't know why but I feel like I could walk for miles & miles at the beach & just keep going.
103.jpg

We made it back to the resort just in time to go see Shadow & hear some tales about her from B'lou Crabbe.
105.jpg

Now the story goes that Shadow was a pup wandering around the construction site when the resort was being built. She showed up every day & nosed around whatever was being done. Everyone thought she was someone else's dog but she really didn't belong to anyone that was working there. So, before long, she was just a part of the place & she is to this day!!!! He told a few tales about her liking to chase rabbits & how she ended up with her foot prints in the tiles in our rooms. It was great to just see her & get a chance to rub her head as we were missing our dog greatly by this point.
109.jpg

110.jpg

After petting Shadow, we went back to our room & rested awhile & ate a sandwich for lunch. Then headed to Big Murgies Den to hear ghost stories & legends of the lowcountry with B'Lou. Well, we ended up being the only people to show up for this but that didn't seem to matter to B'Lou. He went ahead with his stories & told us alot about the gullah culture in South Carolina. We heard about haints, hags, boodaddies, plat eyes & behinders. We also learned a bit about Hilton Head-it was home to 40,000 union troops during the Civil War. And who knew the South Carolina coast was trolled by fearsome pirates like Captain Jack Calico-that Disney based some of Jack Sparrow on. It was great listening to the stories & then talking with B'Lou after about how special Disney is in everything they set out to do. Here we were in South Carolina but we were still getting bits & pieces of that Disney magic. :lovestruc

After our storytelling time, we packed up & headed to the beach for the rest of the afternoon. We enjoyed watching the waves, listening to the ocean & watching people. There was the cutest little boy that I loved watching jump in the puddles that the ocean had made & kicking the water. He was highly entertaining. We chatted about everything & nothing & just had a great last day relaxing at the beach. We went up to the Beach House for a pit stop at one point & came back to the beach with a Rum Punch to enjoy. We stayed out on the beach until about 6:30 & we were practically alone out there. We reluctantly packed up our stuff & headed back to the resort. Another bath in the big tub with a bath bomb was in order & it felt heavely. Then, we headed out to dinner at Red Fish.
111.jpg

Eric had crab cakes.
113.jpg

I had scallops with lobster mac & cheese.
112.jpg

Our last dinner in Hilton Head was delicous! Then, it was back to the room for relaxing. Today was just a relaxing & take it easy last day---I didn't lug around the camera so that's why there aren't many photos as I only used my iphone that day. It was a great way to relax & enjoy our last moments in Hilton Head.

Up next..........Savannah bound

The story of Shadow reminds me of how we ended up with our dog. When the house next door to us was being built, on the day they poured the foundation, there was this pretty yellow lab dog hanging out over there all day with the workers. We assumed that she belonged to one of them. But they all left at the end of the day and she remained. Funny thing was that she never left the site, she just sat there like she was waiting for someone to return - for two full days! Finally I knew she had to be getting hungry so I lured her over with some food. That was 10 years ago and she's been with us ever since! I still think she belonged to one of those workers and they just dumped her there - I mean why else would she just stay there :confused3 Oh well, their loss was our gain, she has been the best dog we've ever had. :goodvibes

Your dinner that night looked fabulous! I love scallops.

Shadow is adorable!

This is such a relaxing trip. The way a vacation SHOULD be! :thumbsup2

Never been to St Augustine but I've heard it's really pretty & I think they do ghost tours there too.

How cool about your dog. Maybe she is Shadow's cousin. :teeth: Those scallops were so good not to mention that lobster mac & cheese which was heavenly.....even the asparagus on the plate was good.

Shadow is adorable!

This is such a relaxing trip. The way a vacation SHOULD be! :thumbsup2
It was pretty relaxing in the middle....busy in Atlanta & Savannah...I was ready for a few more beach days after Savannah.

Those scallops and mac & cheese look sooooo good! Sounds like a fun relaxing day. Don't you just love listening to the ocean?

I heard that St. Augustine has ghost tours as well. So we will definitely do one since we are going in October!

I do love listening to the ocean......so peaceful & soothing. I need it on my ipod so when I'm at work & get stressed out I could listen to it for a minute to chill out.
You'll have to let me know about St Augustine!

Oh I will, remember I owe you a trip report for hounding you on your October trip last year?

We slept in a bit our last day, ate breakfast in the room & then packed up our stuff to head out on the last leg of our adventure. I packed us some sandwiches to take with us for lunch since we had leftover turkey & stuff. We checked out & said our goodbyes to DVC HHI knowing we will be back some time soon.
It was a pretty quick drive to Savannah probably about 45 minutes.
Entering Georgia.
115.jpg

Driving over the cool bridge into Savannah.
117.jpg

Our first stop was Bonaventure Cemetary. This is the cemetary featured in the movie Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil. It is a really beautiful place & we wanted to go exploring there.
IMG_2845.jpg

We found a nice shady spot & had a picnic lunch in the car before getting out to walk around this very peaceful place.
IMG_2846.jpg

This is Little Gracie...one of the most visited graves. The sculpture was done from a photograph taken shortly before the little girl died of pnuemonia. It is very life like.
IMG_2851.jpg

And this is her garden.
IMG_2855.jpg

We enjoyed walking around & looking at all the unique stauary & the old graves. There were a few other people walking around too, but it felt really peaceful & quiet. The only thing disturbing us was the mosquitos & I got a couple of whopper sized bites.
IMG_2856.jpg

IMG_2865.jpg

This is one of the Mercer family plots.
IMG_2875.jpg

There were lots of Mercers in Savannah but the most famous was Johnny Mercer the prolific song writer who wrote songs like Accentuate the positive, Moon River, Skylark etc.
This is a bench that sits in the family plot that has some of his song titles & a caricature of him on it.
IMG_2876.jpg

IMG_2877.jpg

We alos visited the graves of Mary Telfair & Conrad Aiken. It really is a beautiful cemetary & has a lovely setting. Near the back of the cemetary it overlooks part of the river.
IMG_2883.jpg

IMG_2887.jpg

Would this not be spooky as heck if you saw it at night? Unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you look at it, Bonaventure closes at 5pm.
IMG_2889.jpg

IMG_2890.jpg

IMG_2892.jpg

Not a bad place to rest for eternity & a cool place to visit if you are in the area.

So, after exploring we drove to the Doubletree in downtown Savannah to check in.
IMG_2903.jpg

The hotel ending up having a good location for touring on foot & was a good place to stay.
IMG_2893.jpg

Our room had a lovely view of the river & the cool bridge.
IMG_2895.jpg

We went out & walked around a little after getting settled in our room. We were very close to the City Market area.
IMG_2913.jpg

IMG_2909.jpg

We walked to Ellis square which is a newly done green space that used to be a meeting area until the city decided to turn it into a parking garage. In the last couple of years, they decided to tear down the parking garage & turn it back into a green space where people could meet. There is a statue of Johnny Mercer there to greet visitors & welcome them to Savannah.
IMG_2911.jpg

We walked back to the hotel passing City Hall.
IMG_2935.jpg

IMG_2936.jpg

continued in next post......

We went back to the hotel & rested a bit before cleaning up & heading back out to walk to dinner at the Olde Pink House.
IMG_2918.jpg

We had decided we didn't want to get dressed up, so we headed downstairs to the tavern in the Olde Pink House.
IMG_2919.jpg

It is really small & quaint & is supposed to be haunted. It's been a tavern since forever. We waited for a table by the fireplace & had a nice cocktail.
IMG_2920.jpg

IMG_2923.jpg

I had a delicious Georgia peachtini & Eric had some wine.
122.jpg

It wasn't long before our table was ready. We both had she-crab soup for starters.
IMG_2928.jpg

I had a burger with veggies & Eric had a steak. Dinner was really good & the atmosphere was great. They had a lady in costume that came around greeting people & who also sang a few songs. Towards, the end of dinner, they had a piano player. It was a great meal & we really enjoyed it.
IMG_2929.jpg

We strolled back through the squares to the hotel.
IMG_2934.jpg

Passing by Paula Deen's restaurant The Lady & Sons.
IMG_2938.jpg

IMG_2940.jpg

We didn't eat there this time but we have in the past & it is good old country cooking. We strolled back to the hotel to get the car for our next adventure.
IMG_2942.jpg

Up next............ghost stories in the dark.
