My son's class had a Halloween party on Friday. He was telling me about some of the costumes and then he started describing his one friend wearing a fedora, with gold chains and carrying a picture of a "scantily clad" woman. I asked "What was he supposed to be??" My son said "A pimp".

My son has no idea what a pimp is...sorry but at his age I have never felt the need to teach him about prostitution, lol.

Is it just me or that wildly inappropriate? This is the same kid that attended the Grade 3 party as Jason from the Friday the 13th movies (he couldn't do that this year because the new rule is "no gore"...probably enacted because of him and his costume with all the blood on it)...I wonder what goes on in some parents heads (and households) really. Or am I the one out to lunch? I tend to over protective so its a possibility.

But geez. :confused3

I always wonder that too. Some parents just drive me crazy and I just want to yell at them "WHAT ARE YOU THINKING!?" It's kinda like Disneyland/Disney World...Where the worlds worst parenting skills are on parade. I was there last week and there were kids climbing on trashcans and standing on the train after being told by the conductor numerous times to sit their little butts down...do the parents say anything? Nope.

Maybe they are originally from Nevada, where brothels are legal. ;)

You know what rule is going to be added to next year's costume rules. . .

The pimp costume, without the pic of the scantily clad woman, sounds fine to me.
A few yrs back when my kids were in kindergarten, one girl dressed up as a rock star(Britney Spear's type costume) with her mid-driff exposed! I thought that was pretty innapropriate, esp. for kindergarten!
She got away with wearing the costume. I guess it depends on the principal of the school, what is appropriate and what is not appropriate for Halloween costumes.

I saw that costume in the store, it isn't labeled as pimp. Not that that makes a difference, but obviously the kids know exactly what it is.

Totally inappropriate. We had a kindergartener at our school who came as Peewee Herman.!

It is parents like those of this boy that get schools to ban all Halloween costume parties!

Nuts!

Ick.

I bet that parent has a "my kid beat up your honor student" sticker on their car. ;)

kids aren't as dumb as they are made out to be. i remember in 6th grade i knew what a pimp was, i knew just about a whole bunch of things. when my parents asked what something was, id say "i dont know" why? its embarrassing to talk about these things with parents. i don't agree with letting him wear it in 4th grade but i'd just explain to him that it's inappropriate, if he asks why i'd say because it represents something very dirty. with good parenting, i assure u when a kid is older he/she will make good decisions without you around so far you are doing the right thing ^_^ but just keep in mind, he might know more than you think

I refused a pimp costume for my son last year. He was 14. I don't think glorifying selling women/men/boys for sex is appropriate for any child.

Do you think that is inappropriate?

Pee Wee Herman is not appropriate for young children. His old show, at least, had double entendre all over the place. He was later caught exposing himself for purpose of self gratification and arrested. he's experiencing a reprise but his show is on Broadway and not on TV for children. Inappropriate, yes.

Actually, Paul Reubens was arrested not Pee Wee Herman. It's just a character. Children would not know of the "double entendres" in the show. Not an inappropriate costume to me.

REALLY???:confused3:scared1: Do you know what a pimp is? The "boss" of a prostitute. Somebody who makes a living selling sex. You really think that this is an appropriate costume for a fourth grader, who is about 9 years old???

Good grief...no wonder the world is falling apart....:sad2:

My DH has a purple suit along with a purple hat that he wears to be the Joker from Batman. When he adds the green hair and make-up, it looks great. This year, my DS15 asked if he could wear dad's Joker costume to school, expect he didn't want the green hair paint or make-up. I was afraid that with just the purple suit and hat, he would look more like a pimp than the Joker. You really need the make-up or a mask which he didn't want to wear (he has Asperger's and is sensitive to things on his face). We decided to make him the Riddler instead, which just involved putting questions marks on a green shirt and pair of pants. I really couldn't send him to school in just that purple suit and hat. Even if he told people he was the Joker, he would still have looked like a pimp and I didn't think that was appropriate, especially in his specialized school that includes kids from kindergarten through high school.

:thumbsup2 ITA, I would have no problem with my kids dressing up as Pee Wee, or a number of characters Paul Reubens has played, including The Spleen
