A new one for me (yet another tipping thread)

I know we’ve had a lot of tipping threads, but I managed to find a new one I would have never thought of as a tipping situation. Wondering if anyone else has seen this before?

My older son sent me a link for a Christmas idea and I went to order it. The best way I can describe it (as a non techy person) is a Nintendo Gameboy emulator that can play any Nintendo game.

Anyways, I go to check out and the last screen was one asking if I wanted to tip the staff at the company as thanks for their work. Huh? Wha???

tvguy's money saving seminars on YouTube would be more valuable than a monetary tip.

Is this system a modded Gameboy (with added features such as a backlight)? If so those take a lot of time and effort to make so I GUESS to a tiny extent (and I do mean tiny) I can see where they're coming from but that's still ridiculous. Just up the price of the system rather than ask for a tip. Would rather have that than ask for a tip for an online purchase IMO.

Yeah you should have an extra credit class after hours for high school students. Would be the most important class they take. Record them and then put them on YouTube. Many students have no clue about money. Look how many get into trouble with their college loans.

It's all good, I was just curious. Based off the price alone, I'm going to say no (the ones I've seen go for over $160 minimum) and agree that asking for a tip is ridiculously stupid.

Actually my family has come across many times. Often it is smaller companies doing niche things with a small team. A common way they put out the virtual tip jar is asking to buy them a coffee for $5. Sometimes we buy them that ‘coffee’ if it seems a small dedicated crew providing a unique thing we enjoy, and likely not making big bucks for it. It’s a way to encourage others to keep investing the time creating things that maybe the masses don’t care about, but we do. Let them know we appreciate the effort.

Yes, I’ve come across a few websites asking for tips. Plus some charities ask for an extra small donation, like $5, if you donate $25 or order some of their merchandise.

If you order tickets for Busch Gardens online, they ask you to donate to an animal conservation foundation.

Yes, https://www.robotimeonline.com/ also asks for a tip when you checkout. Nope, not tipping for an online purchase!

Never seen that but I don't see any reason to tip if ordering online. Tipping USED to be for those like a server at a restaurant who made LESS than minimum wage and tips were intended to make up the difference. Seems the whole idea of tipping has gotten way out of hand.

It’s really just the payment platform, I can’t imagine anyone tips. Doesn’t bother me.

@mjkacmom I don't disagree, but don't put the fault on the payment platform, the business has the ultimate choice to turn it on or off. One of our area mini mart/gas stations just pulled it after some blow back, so I really think consumers need to let the business know its a turn off and we have other choices. (Looking at you Five Guys)

if I were prone to tip at any fast food it would like BE five guys. they offer so many options for toppings and in all the years I have NEVER received an incorrectly put together order (unlike at Wendy's and most fast food places where my one family member's very simple traditional order of a 'plain' bacon cheeseburger-no veggies/no condiments-is wrong 8 out of 10 times ).
