A new one for me (yet another tipping thread)

if I were prone to tip at any fast food it would like BE five guys. they offer so many options for toppings and in all the years I have NEVER received an incorrectly put together order (unlike at Wendy's and most fast food places where my one family member's very simple traditional order of a 'plain' bacon cheeseburger-no veggies/no condiments-is wrong 8 out of 10 times :( ).
Lord, Five Guys is soooo much more expensive, I would hope their employees are getting paid more.

I have heard in some areas, they have a tip option at self checkouts. o_O

It’s really just the payment platform, I can’t imagine anyone tips. Doesn’t bother me.

In the Austin, Texas airport, the registers at least one self service snack kiosk did NOT have a “No Tip” option. You MUST choose one of the suggestions. I think the lowest was 10%.

WAY better quality/less expensive than fatburger-

fatburger- 1/3rd pound (so 5 1/3rd ounces) w/7 no fee toppings is $9.59, $3.49 for a smattering of fries, $5.99 for a smallish shake.

5 guys- (at 6.6 ounces is bigger) w/15 no fee toppings is $8.80, $5.30 for enough fries for 3 with leftovers, $5.99 for decent sized shake.

if we order the same dollar amount at 5 guys as we spend at fatburger we end up with more food at a much higher quality.

Never been to Fatburger as the closest one is 15 miles away.
Burger is $8.49 versus $11.79 at Five Guys
Fries $3.99 versus $5.29
Shake $5.99 versus $6.79
Can't compare quality but Five Guys is $5.40 more here

The Mom and Pop Gourmet burger place we favor is $18.48, and I have a hard time believing either Five Guys or Fatburger is better.

I'm guessing part of it's due to California $20 fast food minimum wage but then despite minimum here being $16.28 the average pay for fast food work locally is $23 per hour ($21.00 starting/probationary). we also pay 9% sales tax so that's a bit more than you. I guess it's a matter of knowing how much your customer base is willing to pay (fatburger here go the message and shuttered their stand alone location-now they only exist at the resort casino where people already expect to overpay for everything).

Those prices are both restaurants in my area, so wage laws are the same. Although that law is kind of a joke since fast food places all paid more than $20 an hour because people won't work for less. The McDonalds near me had big signs up advertising $23 training wage for the first 90 days, $25 an hour after 90 days.

There was no “other” option? Where you could change it to 0?

I preordered cookies for a party a few months ago. This is one lady that does the cookie making out of her house. They are speciality cookies and very expensive. At the end of the order I was asked if I wanted to tip. Nope!

No “other” option. There was an employee supervising the area and she apologized and said that’s how the vendor wanted it. Employees received a small percentage of the tips while the vendor kept the bulk.

I was thirsty so I submitted to their extortion.

Today, in Melbourne FL I went through a car wash. An automatic car wash. After selecting the wash, I was asked to tip. It is everywhere!

Jeez, that’s terrible. Especially the vendor keeping most of it.

Agreed. For all of the outrage over the law... not like they were getting anyone to apply unless they were paying $20+ an hour.

At our local casino for bingo it’s a separate purchase if you want to play the games on paper thete sits a tip jar. For what you sit there and hand some papers
The real topper is going to a cashier in the casino to cash in slot tickets and there also a tip jar there.
I’m supposed to tip
You to give me my money back
Big nope on that one

@mjkacmom I don't disagree, but don't put the fault on the payment platform, the business has the ultimate choice to turn it on or off. One of our area mini mart/gas stations just pulled it after some blow back, so I really think consumers need to let the business know its a turn off and we have other choices. (Looking at you Five Guys)
A local regional chain liquor store started delivering during COVID, $5 delivery fee, order online, used their employees to deliver. Recently they switched over to door dash (but no mention of that on the website), you pay online. However, there was no way to tip on their website. I never have cash, I informed the drivers this, they were shocked but thanked me because they weren’t getting any tips. Now I only order if I have cash, since the majority of their money comes from the tips, delivery fees go to the company. I guess I’d rather have the option (I dislike going to the liquor store, have beer drinkers, we can’t buy beer or wine at grocery stores).

When Petsmart started their free same-day delivery during covid it was through door dash and also with no option to tip. Eventually after a long while (as in enough months went by) they added that tipping option. I stopped doing the same-day delivery once they added the tipping; hmm it would have been late 2021 maybe? It would cost me a decent amount more to have the cans of cat food delivered than it would to pick it up at the store. The entire point of the Petsmart delivery during covid was no-contact (and their text messages told you as such) so the idea of tipping in cash would completely against that idea. Nowadays people obviously feel differently but I suspect that the popularity of the same-day delivery is was caused them to change their programming to add in a tip. I haven't checked the delivery to see if the tipping is still there but I assume it is.

In our state home delivery of liquor is very limited with only a few services authorized, instacart being one of them but during covid is when it changed to allow curbside pickup something that was previously prohibited by law. We also cannot purchase hard liquor at the grocery stores and beer is only under a certain percentage at the grocery store. The liquor store we primarily go to has kept up their curbside pick up as a more permanent feature though we don't tend to use it as we like to go in and select things ourselves.

The one that bugs me (currently) is if you go to an actual restaurant where you would leave a tip, they conveniently calculate the tip at the bottom of the receipt - but it's wrong. You tip on the subtotal, not the total including the taxes. I will actually leave less tip if I catch it. Watch out for the mandated tip (usually for large parties) above the total line too. In that case not only would you be tipping twice, but your handily calculated tip at the bottom of the receipt would be calculated after adding in the mandatory tip. Yeah, you'd be tipping on the tip. Now that's a tipping point if ever there was one.
