A Monorail Incident

Last Friday night my DH and DS were on the monorail heading to the Polynesian. We were already sitting when a family of mom, grandmom and two young girls boarded. One girl had to be 8 or 9 and the other child no older than 5 tops. The girls were very excited and I assume they had just left from a character dinner at CRT by the way they were dressed and happily chirping. When my DH and DS got up to let them all sit. Mom and Grandmom were very thankful and said how was this was a first since they have been here. Mom said how she thought "chilvary was dead, but apparently it was not in the MK :goodvibes " I thought that was a pretty cool thing to say. The youngest child was very excited (in good way) about her experience with Goofy and gave my teenage DS all the details with visuals :) of her dinner. She also let us each hold her glowing ice cube, (for a couple of seconds ;) ) She really had me laughing while I listened to her. My DH and I felt really blessed to share the magic her mom and grandmom must have felt, because I could see it in their eyes as they listened to her too. I'm sure it will be memorable to them, because it was one of the most memorable incidents during our stay.

Unfortunately, there was family sitting across from us that made it clear that they were annoyed by all the laughter and talking, but I think I was the only one who noticed--I did not even bother to mention it to my DS and DH since they had their backs to them. Oh well, maybe they had a lonnng day at the parks.

THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS THREAD! :teeth:

A lot of people love to PRINT the negative. I always give up a seat if someone older (and thankfully there are) is standing. While my DH sits there :sad2: . I love him but he was not raised properly.

These types of stories is what kepts this board humming. :love2:

Me too!! I remember the last time I was there I was holding a sleeping child on my lap and and older woman got on the bus. Not one person offered to give her their seat even though it was obvious that she was having trouble. I stood up holding my son (still sleeping) and let her sit in my seat. I can't believe how inconsiderate some people are.

Although keep in mind that sometimes a person who looks perfectly healthy is not. I have asthma, and sometimes I'm fending off an attack. No one would ever really notice, even if they knew me well, but standing rather than sitting could put me over the top. That's just one example of a hidden disability.

Oh I understand that, but out of a bus load of people, how many of them do you think have a hidden disability?? I'd bet not many. Like I said, I was holding a 50lb sleeping child and still got up trying to balance myself.

What a magical moment for you all!! :goodvibes

Let's keep this thread magical and leave the standing/sitting debate for another time! :flower:

Myst

What a great example you and your DH are setting for your DS!!! I remember once waiting for a table at a restaurant when I was 8 months pregnant (I mean VERY pregnant! swollen so bad I didn't look like myself!) and a mom with her older children just sat on a bench and looked at me. The children weren't even sitting still and they were definatly old enough to stand and wait. Kids are never too young to learn manners and how to be polite.

And as far as the grumpy people compaining about those enjoying themselves and having a good time.....I hate to be on vacation with those "sticks in the mud"!! :crazy2:

Yes but not everyone thats still sitting has a disability. I've seen and noticed many times that when older people get on the bus, DH and I seem to be the only one ever willing to get up and let them sit down. I think its sad. I was taught that respecting my elders was very important and I will always offer my seat to someone older, or even a mom with a sleeping child.

Great story! I love the positive side of Disney. It's such a great place. Time to go.. Can't Wait!!!

Way to go for you son! He really earned his ears that day. :earsboy: It's great that he got to reap the reward from it and that this will leave a lasting impression on him - not to mention the girls (good to set their expectations high). That's a one in a million kid!

I was at WDW in November taking some mental health time while the wife and girls were off doing other things. I couldn't believe how shocked people were when I gave up seats on busses and monorails. Pretty sad really.

I would think most people wouldn't want you to get up if you're holding a
sleeping child in your lap. (I wouldn't.) I've tried to give up a seat to an
"older gentleman", but he would have none of it. I guess he was really
being a "gentleman"! :earsboy:

I don't give up my seat to kids unless they're too small to hold on safely.
Some parents actually told their kids to give up their seats to others.
It's rare to see that, but it happened.

Great post! Yet another reason to visit Disney, watching the magic wash over complete strangers who are there for the first time. :goodvibes

Uncle Buck: Just had to tell you your name brings back memories --my family loves your namesake movie! :cool1:

On my first trip to WDW I was 6 months pregnant in July. I rode the bus to and from Dixie Landings almost every time standing up while teenage boys sat- Good For You!!! I know they did appreciate it.

We must have had really nice people everytime we got on the bus when we there in April. Almost everytime ds was a sleep at night and everytime someone gave up there seat to let dh sit with him instead of trying to balance and hold a preschooler at the same time.

when i went to disney with the fmaily i babysit, the 5 year old got up many times on the bus to stand with me or his parents , so that an older person , or one with a small child could sit

I felt the magic by just reading your post!
How wonderful! Thanks for sharing! :goodvibes

That is SO sad!!

A magical story,I love to see post's like this.It is this magic that can lift your spirit so high if you will be open to it.Many folks go to WDW and let some bad moments ruin the magic, if they would let the bad go and be ready for the good they could have many magical memories. :goodvibes :wizard: :flower:
