A May weekend of Beach Club Eats! (plus 'Ohana!) (Update 5/17: Cape May Breakfast!)

But, I have an extremely picky son. You didn't happen to see the kids buffet did you? I think I saw they have chicken nuggets. Do you or anyone reading know what is offered at kids buffets?

Thanks :)

The night we were there, the kids' buffet had chicken nuggets, macaroni & cheese, roasted chicken drumsticks, and pizza. I'm not sure if their offerings for kids rotate like the rest of the menu does supposedly but mac & cheese and chicken nuggets seem to be pretty standard at most buffets! HTH! :goodvibes

Sounds perfect. Definitely helps. thanks for your response:goodvibes

great review and pictures by the way

I rather just eat at Beaches and Cream, but have to give in and let my husband have his buffet I guess :rotfl:

Great reviews! I am glad I am not the only one who didn't fall over myself for Cape May Clambake. It was just a decent buffet with crab legs (which were mostly a PITA).

Gotta say that, as we are not fans of seafood/shellfish at all, Cape May just doesn't appeal. The desserts looked good though :thumbsup2

I had no fears walking into Cape May again, despite the previous night's dinner, because as picky as I am with dinner buffets, I'm the total opposite with breakfast buffets. I love all breakfast food, so I'm easy to please here! :thumbsup2

Our reservation was at 9am on Mother's Day, so as you can imagine, the place was once again a zoo! They were handing out carnations to all the moms, which I thought was very sweet! When a CM came to seat us, she handed one to me as well. I told her "Ohhh, I'm not a mom, please save this for your next guest!" and the poor woman was so flustered at this, for some reason, and stammered for a few minutes so I just wound up keeping it.

We ordered some much-needed coffee and hit up the buffet!

My first plate:

ahhhh, fruit, it had been awhile. Pineapple, oranges, strawberries, a chocolate croissant, and some bread which I've already forgotten...date nut maybe? Everything was delicious!

DH's first plate...

meat, meat, and LOTS of it! He made himself a lox and cream cheese bagel and loved it.

My second plate...

Who can resist mickey waffles?! <3 even if I DID have to lean down to the kiddy section to get them! They were warm, crispy, and wonderful. The asparagus and scrambled eggs were well-cooked. That quiche/fritatta thing, however, was horrifying. I took one bite and it was a garlic EXPLOSION in my mouth. Some might like that, but noooot me.

DH's second plate...

He's the only person I know who LOOOOOVES disney bacon! The biscuit and gravy IIRC was disappointing, but that pie-looking thing in the middle was a raising bread french toast that was SUPER sweet and super delicious.

My third, yes, THIRD plate! I was determined to get money's worth after the previous night! :rolleyes1

I had to have some of that french toast for myself. YUM. I don't know why I took the bacon, I hate all pork and wound up leaving it. Would it KILL at least one breakfast buffet at Disney to feature turkey sausage or turkey bacon? Sheesh. Anyway, the biscuit was pretty dry and obviously meant to only be eaten when smothered under sausage gravy. I usually love breakfast potatoes, but these were cold and hard, no bueno!

Hope I'm not violating any DiS code of ethics by posting this, but I can't resist! The table near us included a five year old boy who was TERRIFIED of the characters. He spent most of the meal under the table, and his parents were slipping him food. Occasionally he'd poke his head out if the coast was clear, but for the most part he didn't budge from the floor. But it was apparently his birthday, so when the CM came out with a birthday cupcake for him, she had to bend down to deliver it to him under the table, while his relatives stooped down to photograph the moment. I thought that was hysterical. What a birthday memory!

All in all, Cape May breakfast was much more successful for me than dinner. But, I'd still probably rank it at the very bottom of my Disney breakfast buffet list, out of the five I've tried. So overall, I don't think we'll really be hitting Cape May again during our next BC stay! Next time I'd love to give Captain's Grille at the YC a try. :thumbsup2

And sadly, that concludes this weekend of treats and eats! Thank you all for reading and commenting! I can't wait to explore more restaurants in September! :goodvibes

Oh, it's over so soon :sad1:

Now we're talking though - breakfast buffet. If there's no chance of us eating dinner at Cape May, I'd say that there's every chance that we might do breakfast. Would you say that it is necessary to make ADRs for breakfast here or would we be OK as a walk-up in late August?

We will be trying Cape May breakfast on our last day (it's so much more convienent than us trying to get to another resort). Your pics show alot of choices!!

you mentioned that this breakfast was at the bottom of your list, where are you top choices??

I have wanted to try Boma (will have to wait until we stay at AKL for ease) and Tusker House (but i can't tear myself away from enjoying the parks early in the day to have breakfast!!)

Thank you so much! And hey, too bad we're not going at the same time, I'd say we could let our hubbies go off to Cape May and you and I hit Beaches and Cream!

Definitely! My DH also brought up another point, too...he didn't like the setup of the buffet at ALL. With all the food in one big square, it was really crowded and hard to navigate.

Gotta say that, as we are not fans of seafood/shellfish at all, Cape May just doesn't appeal. The desserts looked good though :thumbsup2
They were definitely a strong redeeming factor...not strong enough to save it overall for me though!

There was a MOB of people when we were there, so it seemed fairly popular...plus it's a character dining event, and those always seem to book up. BUT, it's also a credit card guarantee-required restaurant, and since they've started that system it's become MUCH easier to snag last minute reservations, in my experience at least. I think you might be fine with a walk-up. :thumbsup2

Our very favorite so far has actually been Crystal Palace. Getting into the park pre-opening IS magical, but the food served was actually my favorite. Delicious potato scramble, pooh's puffed french toast, great pastries...DH and I both agreed it was our number one! :thumbsup2

Our #2 is Boma's breakfast buffet, which feels like home for us! Love the omelet station and the frunch! :woohoo:

My third favorite was Chef Mickey's, which gets a lot of bad press here on the board, but I enjoyed! Pretty standard fare compared to the first two, with the exception of perhaps the breakfast pizzas.

My fourth favorite was 1900 Park Fare...I think I enjoyed the characters more than the food, but it wasn't bad by any means, and that strawberry soup stuff was ridiculously sweet, in a good way!

And...I'd put Cape May dead last.

Those are all we've tried so far. I'm DYING to give some of the 'adult' breakfast buffets a try, like the ones at The Wave and Captain's Grille, which I so wish we'd gone to while we were at BC! They seem so decently priced too.

And I HAVE to try Tusker House someday! AK is my favorite park!

Ahhhh, too many restaurants to try! And that can be hard when you desperately want to keep going back to the ones you love. But I guess there are worse problems to have! :lmao:

Thank for the virtual trip to my very favorite resort! :cloud9: I will be putting the white sangria on my "to try" list.... thanks for the tip.

If you're looking for a good breakfast, try Kouzzina over at Boardwalk. I thought it was delicious! Plus they have breakfast sangria. :)

Great reviews! Sounds like a great trip!

I really wanted to try Beaches and Cream this trip, but my timing never worked out unfortunatly. After seeing your pics of the No Way Jose, I have to make it a priority for next trip! :thumbsup2 That looks amazing! Good to know about the raspberry syrup for the sodas too. That will definitely get DH over there.

By the way, I had the same awkward carnation incident at WDW on Mother's Day as well. I felt very odd taking one when I'm not a mom, but they insisted. Oh well, at least it was something nice that they made us take!

:rotfl: The pic of the CM delivering the cupcake under the table is priceless! Thanks for your reviews, I really enjoyed reading!

Thanks for sharing! That was hilarious about the little boy under the table and the parents feeding him food! :rotfl2: Even funnier that you captured the moment! Your photos are awesome!

I was LOL over your story of they 5 year old!!!:lmao: That is just way toooooo funny!! Poor little guy.:goodvibes: But what great service from the server & someday that little boy will be able to laugh @ this funny moment!

Fantastic reviews!

I have to admit, when I got to the photos of the cupcakes after 'Ohana, I thought "Are they insane?" - because DH and I could barely walk after we had dinner there! (Seriously, I think a tear or two may have been shed) And then I kept reading, of course. :)
