Just over two weeks ago (9/11) I posted asking for good thoughts since my IL's and SIL were coming over trying to talk my DH into going into a psychiatric hospital for an evaluation. He had been diagnosed as bi-polar and his behavior had become very eratic and scary. He didn't end up going and we went through a WILD two weeks. The tuesday after that sunday I got called to his dr's office to pick him up as the dr. said he "was not doing well". SIL slept over that night and we watched over DH and talked and talked to try to come up with a plan to help him.

SIL was able to call in a favor and got DH an appointment with a specialist in the Boston area on 9/21. Before that time DH was approached by a couple of people at work who had been concerened with his behavior over the last few months. DH was surprised as he thought he was doing ok at work even tho I kept telling him he wasn't (I had seen some of the garbled e-mails he had been sending out)

There were other things that went on but the important thing was that DH called his dr and got off the adderall - the drug that was making him SO HYPER - and that made almost an immediate change - so much so that people at work commented on the change in his behavior.

When DH went to the specialist he was able to sit and talk and listen for an entire hour. The dr. was amazed with the drugs my DH had been given - a mood stabilizer, an amphetamine (sp?) and a sedative - no wonder why my DH was acting wacked out all the time!! The dr. told him to stop everything immediately. He said that it was totally irresponsible of DH's dr to give him all that different kind of medication and not monitor him more closely. His meds had been changed so many times and he had bad reactions all the time. I question the diagnose of bi-polar as DH's troubles didn't start until he started the medication runaround. (SIL is bi-polar and myabe they just assumed DH was...I don't know..)

So DH has been off all meds since last thursday and the change is incredible!! I never thought I would have him back. He just sits and looks at me when i tell him about his behavior these past few months - he doesn't remember a lot of it. Today he went off to work in the best mood I have seen him in AGES. His head is clear and he can feel the difference. He knows he has to get his credibility back at work but he will - he has always been respected in his field. I am cautiously optomistic that he will be ok.

So now I get on my soap box - If you or someone you love is on medication, PLEASE make sure that they are being monitored by a dr!! We blindly believed in and followed DH's dr and he took the medication he was told to take. It was SCARY what the drugs did to him. Very scary. It all started when he went to his primary care dr. and met with the nurse practioner and spoke about anxiety at work. That led to a referal to a psychiatrist for the meds and another one to a psychologist for therapy. It snowballed from there. I also noticed that when i went in to my dr, and spoke about stress at home they were very quick to offer me prozac or any other drug of choice. I don't need them!

And now the sappy part.. :) Thank you all for being there to listen to me. Even tho I most likely will not meet most of you IRL, it felt good to know that there were people out there listening to and caring about me. I appreciate all your kind words and messages and pm's - it meant A LOT.

I feel better today than I have felt in a LONG time...not so scared that something bad is looming overhead.

Thanks again everyone! :)

Jill

I'm an etremely happy for you. :cool1: I had been wondering how your dh was doing. Again, big wishes for continued good health. :cheer2:

Oh wow, I'm so glad to hear that! I know there are docs out there who aren't pill pushers but my exp has been that most of them will just hand out drugs with little thought, testing, or education to the patient. My new GI got ticked at me when I refused some of the meds because I don't need them!!!!! The overuse of antibiotics, esp, is completely out of control. We have to be our own advocates. It's a shame that all of this may have been preventable. I'm so glad things are better in your house and your husband is back.

Thanks fantastic!!! Continued good thoughts :goodvibes

I am so glad to hear things are better. :grouphug:

DD had to see a lot of drs when she was born. I was young and never even considered questioning a dr. I learned the hard way. I have no problems asking for a second or third opinion now.

This same thing happened to my dad when I was a teenager. His meds were pain related, but they had him on so many things that he was passing out. Happened when he was driving & younger brother & I were in the car. Luckily I was able to get the car pulled over to the side of the highway & stopped safely. They couldn't figure out why he was passing out.

Saw a new Dr. who took him off most off of the meds & he was fine. My grandmother went through the same thing recently. She was hospitalized with an infection related to diverticulitis. A couple of days later, the nurses & my grandfather were convinced that she had had a stroke because of her severe confusion. This went on for a couple of weeks - finally her regular doctor came back from vacation & got her off a bunch of drugs. She's doing great now - sharp as a tack at 89!

Glad your dh is doing so much better! :grouphug:

I am so happy to hear that things are getting better. :)

That is great news. Another reason to beleive that meds are not always the answer.

Jill,

Thanks for the update. I am so glad that your dh is feeling and acting better. Stay strong you two can get through this!! :grouphug:

I am glad that your family is on a road to recovery or discovery perhaps... I also know that doctors sometimes are just not tuned in, you have to be your own healthcare advocate. Learned the hard way as well...

I'm very happy things are working out for you. Take care.

WHEW! Glad to hear that things have improved.

Drugs can be such a good & bad thing. When my brother forgets to take his meds - he is downright scary! He had a head injury 20 years ago and has anger management issues & paranoia - among other problems. We thank God every day for the drugs that keep him human.

What wonderful news for you and your husband. And good advice too regarding prescription drugs. It's always good to get a second opinion, especially when you can tell that something is wrong.

Our prayers have been answered. Continued prayers for you and your DH.

What a scary ride. :( I'm so sorry your DH was put through this turmoil without a good doctor monitoring the drugs and his therapy. Thank goodness things are looking up. Keeping you and your DH in my prayers Jill! :goodvibes
