a little pixie dust for DD#2 taking special tests --and me, anxious mom

DD#2 is taking tests today and tomorrow--a COGAT cognitive test--to determine whether or not she gets into our district gifted program next year. She already qualified on the other necessary test (98% on Iowa math).
Two factors here for me--one, DD#1 also qualified on the Iowas but missed her cognitive score by 3 POINTS!!! She is identified by the state as gifted but not by our district. Admittedly this bothers ME a lot more than DD#2--most teachers have kids in gifted programs but mine seem to just miss.
Two--DD#2's "best friend" (who also grates on my nerves) claims she already qualified, or that's what her teacher told her (DD#2 did say they already took this test in the fall, which leads me to believe she and the other 14 kids testing were close but no cigar). This girl ALWAYS betters DD#2--gets straight As while DD gets one B, gets better parts in plays, swims faster on the swim team--If she gets into the program and DD doesn't I swear I"m going to move. DD is always in her shadow but really likes playing with her so we see a lot of her even if we make an effort to schedule other playdates. In the car just now when Erin told her about her Iowa math score, she said "I don't know what I got but my teacher said it was almost a perfect score". Now she could be full of crap, but she really bugs me and I"d like to see DD#2 doing better than this girl in academics. Again, this is probably MY problem (maybe I need the pixie dust;) )
However, I do hope and pray that DD#2 gets into this challenging and very worthwhile program. Heck, if she is getting a better math score than 1% of 3rd graders in the country she must need challenging! So if you can throw us some PD for tomorrow's part of the day I would appreciate it.

Best of luck to your daughter.

It is natural, I think, for even us parents to be a little competitive, and with the gifted program comes extra attention from teachers and extra resourses, so I understand your wanting your daughter to be there.

Have you thought about whether the "perfect girl" is acting as inspiration for your daughter? That girl does so well, your daughter wants to measure up to her friend. It's better than having a friend with straight D's and your daughter's grades slipping.
