My mother recently dislocated her hip and is refusing to back out of this trip! She got her doctors blessing under the condition we get her a scooter since he doesn’t want her standing or walking much and she has to wear a 10lb bulky brace from hip to ankle. He wrote her a note to get a bulkhead or first class seat on the flight (assuming it’s available) for more leg room.

my question is, since this is a mobility issue, what can I do for her in regards to DAS? The info on the app was very confusing. Do I need to register her the morning we visit? Do I need to tell a cast member? Help!

If she needs help at the rides such as having the moving walkways slow or stopped she or you will have to let the CM at the rides know. Like the pp said if her concerns is just mobility related then no need for a DAS.

Airlines generally will not move passengers without status (top-tier frequent fliers) to First Class. It is usually helpful to call the airline prior to the day of flying to request a bulkhead seat as an accommodation.

it’s unlikely a CM will issue a DAS for this situation as a mobility device (scooter) will be perceived as meeting your mother’s needs (unless there is some other issue). On the good side, that will save you time in requesting one.

You probably want to rent an EVC from an off-site company so that your mother can use it at your hotel and anywhere else you go. See the pinned posts at the top of the forum for information about rentals. Not all companies are the same- some may be better situated to meet your specific needs.

Right, Disney will not issue a DAS for a mobility only issue, so in good news, you can skip the CS line.

For the lines that don't accommodate mobility devices (there are a few), you just speak to the CM when you get there.

Assuming you are flying within the US, here is US Department of Transportation information regarding Seating Accommodations under the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA): https://www.transportation.gov/individuals/aviation-consumer-protection/seating-accommodations

Note in particular from the FAQ section of that page:

Should I contact the airline in advance if I need to sit in a particular seat due to my disability?
  • Yes. If you have a disability and would prefer or need a certain type of seating accommodation, you should contact the airline at the time you make your reservation to learn more about the method that the airline uses to make arrangements for a seating accommodation.
If I have a temporary disability (ex. broken leg), can I still receive a seating accommodation?
  • Yes. If you have a fused or immobilized leg, airlines are required to provide you with a seating accommodation that accommodates your need for more leg room.
Must an airline provide me with a seat in a different class of service to accommodate my disability?
  • No. Although airlines may choose to seat you in another class of service to accommodate your disability, they are not required to provide you a seat in a class of service other than the one you paid to sit in. For example, if you paid for a seat in Economy Class, the airline is not required to seat you in Business Class to accommodate your disability.

Your airline probably has a webpage that addresses "Special assistance" and will provide information about special seating and how to request special assistance/contact the airline for special assistance. For example, American Airlines' page is here: https://www.aa.com/i18n/travel-info/special-assistance/special-assistance.jsp
