While sorting through my Mom's papers, I came across something really interesting. I found a letter writen in German to my Great Grandmother on my father's side and her soon to be husband. It was composed by her brother who was a beer brewer of some note, Hermann Trommer.

Someone along the way took the time to have it translated. It is dated October 8th, 1886.

Dear Brother-in-law and sister,

I received your letter and expect that you all are quite happy and well. Dear Sister, as I gather from your letter you are actually getting married Monday. We are happy and pleased about that. We wish you, dear sister, that you will live happy and content with your husband.

"Good Health" (Gesundheit) and a long life!

Dear sister you are inviting us to your wedding but we cannot fullfill you this wish. I hope that you will not hold this against us. Our little Hermann was so sick. You know it is better not to go out too early after such a sickness, otherwise it could have bad results. Since sick children are so uncomfortable and cranky, we would have little fun with him. So you must excuse us.

I put Brother-in-law George's picture next to your picture and so we will Monday evening lift a glass "Lager". Since we cannot be with you in person, we shall be with you in thought. Your ears will ring.

So think of our Brother and Sister-in-law and so shall we.

Greetings to you,
Hermann Trommer.

I am so excited to have found this. Looks like things haven't changed all that much. Yup, cranky, sick kids were a drag in the 1800's too. :p

Wow! How neat! I'm so glad you shared this with us! I love reading old letters, even if its from people I don't know. I find the correspondence of days gone by such a fascinating thing.

I'm sure you'll treasure this letter for years to come! :)
