A good place to stop halfway in SC

Hello we will be driving for our first time to Disney and was wondering if anyone out there could give us some good places in which to stop over night in South Carolina off of 95. We will be traveling with children from Gettysburg PA and really have never been any further south than WIlliamsburg Va. Any advice good or bad will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

There are many, many hotel choices in Florence, SC. I would probably choose this area. I have heard good things about it. When I drove down from Maryland last December, I went all the way to Brunswick, GA where we stayed at the Hampton Inn there. That was a good place to stay for one night.

We've stopped several times in Walterboro and Hardeeville, both in South Carolina. But on our last trip, we toughed it out and drove a little farther to Savannah (exit 94). When we got there, we found got a very nice suite (sorry I forget where), then headed towards town and found a movie theater and shopping mall.

We drive from the Cleveland (Ohio) area to WDW every summer. We always try to drive more than halfway to WDW the first day so that our second day's drive is easier.

If you do decide to stop in Hardeeville, you'll be less than 30 minutes away from Hilton Head island.

Summer of 02 we stayed at Comfort Inn, Florence, S.C. There's a Crackel Barrel Restaurant at same exit. It's about exactly halfway - 8 hours. This past June we decided to go further the first day, and drove 12 hours to Darien, GA (Exit 49). We stayed at a nice new Comfort Inn, and got to WDW the next day in about 4 hours. We're staying there again on Xmas Eve this year. It's nice to have a short drive the second day, but it is a long haul the first day. Returning home we'll go about halfway each day.

We drive from Cleveland and stop in Savannah, GA, also. This August we stayed at the Wingate and loved it. Savannah is a good stopping point for us because then it's only a short drive the next day to Disney!

For those of you who've said you drive from Cleveland, how long does it take you? (Not counting the time spent at a hotel, of course.)

I live about an hour south of Cleveland and plan to drive to Disney next year. The last time I went, four years ago, I was with my parents and we flew. This time I'm going alone and, since I love road trips, I've decided to drive. I plan to do it all in one shot. I was figuring around 15-17 hours depending on how many stops I make. Do you think that's realistic?

We drove straight through coming home and it took almost exactly 16 hours. If we added our stops together, they would probably come to less than an hour. It was not a bad drive at all!

We don't drive straight through on the way TO Disney, though, because I don't want to be tired when we get there. We've got kids so it's not like we could have checked in and took a nap!

Hope this helps!

Pam

p.s.
We drove between 70 and 80 mph most of the time.

Thanks, Pam, that's a great help! I usually go around the same speed you do, and won't spend a lot of time on stops since I'll be alone, so your driving time is probably very similar to what mine will be. I was concerned that my plans might be unrealistic if the drive was a lot longer than I expected, but it sounds like it should all work out fine.

When I drive somewhere I usually leave at some ridiculously early hour like 4 or 5am, so I figure I'll arrive at my destination at a decent hour. Maybe around 10pm. Surely before midnight.

My plans are to get a relatively cheap hotel in the Orlando area that night, so I'm not wasting my money on a more expensive Disney resort when I won't have even been there that day. Then the next day I'll check in at the Disney resort as early as they'll let me, get all my souvenir shopping for friends and family out of the way, get oriented, and relax at the pool. Then I should be all set to go into park commando mode bright and early the next day. :)

disneyisheaven, While they don't give much advice on whether the hotels are any good, the "Important" note at the top of this Transportation board has a link to a very helpful page which lists all the exits off of I-95. It also gives good advice on which states are more expensive for fuel (NC and FL) so you can try to plan around cheaper fuel stops. I'd love to find something similar for I-77! The only sites I found when I did a Google were sites listing whether or not the exits had food, lodging, gas, etc, but not specifics as to what they were.

Realistic yes, sort of, but, I sure would not want to do it.
BTW, I named my daughter Brook, spelled the same as you. :)

LOL. The longest straight-through drive I've done is about 13 hours, so this will be a longer drive than I've done before, but I don't anticipate having any trouble with it. Occasionally during a trip I have started feeling a bit drowsy, but a short break to grab something to drink and walk around a bit revives me. Sometimes I have rented audiobooks from the local library to take for the drive, which helps. Although after a while they start to get monotonous and I opt for the radio instead. But mostly I just enjoy being on the road.

Brook isn't actually my real name, but I've always really liked that name. It's just an alias I use on message boards and whenever I sign up for something online because I prefer not to give my real name in public forums. I've been online for 17 years, and I've seen and heard too many horror stories. I chose Brook as my alias because of my tendancy toward long posts as in, "You babble so much you must have been born a brook.." :)

You aren't too far from us-in fact, we had dinner at the Pub in Gettysburg on Saturday nite!!

Don't know what time you are leaving, but I think you can easily make it to at least N. Carolina before you stop.

We always drive. Leave at 4:00 AM so we can be around DC before rush hour. We drive all the way to Brunswick, Ga. stopping for a full breakfast en route(Fredericksburg Va.), along with a # of gas and restroom stops. We reach the Hampton INN in Brunswick, Ga. usually around 4:30 (give or take).
Next day it's up and on the road at 6:00AM and we're usually hitting the gate at Old Key West at 10:30.

You can send me a PM or an e-mail if you want any details!

Hi all,
We're thinking about going to Orlando for Christmas this year and would be driving down with our soon to be 3-year-old for the first time. If we left Central NJ around 6am. on a Saturday, would it be realistic to take our overnight stay in Savannah, GA or someplace else? Is Brunswick before Savannah? Should we not consider GA at all and stop in SC? I (obviously) haven't taken a good look at a map yet...btw, my DH says he wants to make the second day shorter by driving as far as we can get on the first day.

Your advice is appreciated!

I can't answer your other questions since I haven't driven through GA before (I will next September when I drive to Disney from OH!), but looking at my road atlas I can tell you that Brunswick is definitely after Savannah.

Savannah is very close to the SC/GA border.

Brunswick is closer to FL, about 39 miles north of the GA/FL border.

DeeCeeSW,

Having gone to school and lived in SC for 17 years, and with parents in Vineland,NJ, I have made the I-95 trip approx 40 times.

I can tell you that from Vineland, NJ to SC/GA border could be done in less than 11 hours. From Central NJ to Savannah (just over the border), you are probably looking at 13 hours with minimal traffic. From Savannah to WDW is approx 4.5 hours.

Be sure to set your start time so that you miss DC rush hour.

Thanks for answering my questions (especially the silly Brunswick one--I really should have looked at a map before posting). We will probably try to drive through to Savannah the first day!
