A ? for vets or vet techs

Or others that might be knowledgable. My 9yo dog, Minky, somehow torn a nail today. It's down into the quick; the nail is still attached but it's fractured so that every time he catches it on something it starts bleeding. I've been cleaning up bloody pawprints since 6pm.

Since he doesn't seem to be in much pain(no crying or limping, just doens't want me to handle that foot) I think I'm going to wait to call the vet in the morning. Those of you who are experienced, how should we deal with this broken toenail? Is there anything the vet can do about it?

I'm not a vet or a vet tech, but my dog caught a nail a few months ago. I took him in the next day and they trimmed it so it wouldn't snag anymore and then they wrapped a bandage around the paw until it stopped bleeding. I couldn't have trimmed the nail myself, it was too painful for him.

Same here. If you can trim it yourself, it'll save you the vet bill. My vet wrapped it up good but the pup wouldn't leave the bandage on for long. She also told me I could snip it myself at home next time if I wanted to.

She also gave an antibiotic ointment to try and keep it from being infected.

There is a product that can be found at Petsmart called QuickStop that is used in grooming salons and vet's offices to immediately stop the bleeding.

While it doesn't work as effectively as the Quick Stop, corn starch pushed firmly onto the nail can do the trick (depending on the severity).

As for the snagging until morning, try a rough emery board/nail file. Or could you put a sock on it held on w/a loose rubberband. I doubt he'll go for either considering you said he won't let you touch it but thought I'd suggest anyway.

My dog did that once on a weekend. So rather than wait for the vet I just put a muzzle on him, and got out the clippers and clipped it myself. Yes, it hurt him, but it was the same thing the vet would have done for a lot cheaper. He was fine soon afterward with no hard feelings towards me.

It's actually better to pull the rest of the nail off rather than cut it back. I also like to put them on antibiotics because they are walking on exposed tissue.

Minky is an 80-lb Standard Poodle. He has big teeth. Minky is very sensitive about having his feet handled, on a good day. Believe me, if he doesn't want me to mess with his foot I will not be messing with his foot. He has never bitten me, but he did snap at the air when i tried looking at it so I know it's painful. I'm going to take him to the vet in the morning and let them deal with it. THey have all the equipment and the manpower. This is a very big dog, taller than a greyhound. I just don't think I can handle him by myself, without getting bitten up in the process.

I take mine to the vet, and he's a 15 pound Shih Tzu! It just makes me nervous to mess with things like that (plus she can give me something to prevent against infection while it heals).

Mine is a 60 pound golden that will bite in a heartbeat if I even just clip his nails on a good day...hence the muzzle..

I didn't want him to have to walk around all day on a broken nail so I took care of it myself and there was no infection or crazy amount of pain afterward.

Update--

Minky's foot is still bleeding a bit, so I took him in to see the vet first thing. she muzzled him and clipped off the snaggly piece of nail that was remaining. Then she packed the nail with antiseptic powder and bandaged him up. Now he has a purple "knee sock" on it. Once or twice he has licked at it, but it clearly hurts so he leaves it alone.

Thanks for all the advice and good wishes. I 'm sure Minky will be on his way to good health in a matter of days.

I bet the purple sock looks cute....hope he feels better soon because I'm sure that had to hurt!
