A Fistful of Fastpasses: Disneyland with the DIS and ABD! (Final Day post #205-10/4)

Oh man...that WB studio tour looks AWESOME!!! That's so up my alley. I went to the NBC tour in NYC in April and even though it was small potatoes next to this- I enjoyed it. I would just love this tour!

They also have an extended (all-day) tour that costs quite a bit more. Paramount also does a backlot tour that I did many years ago. The Podcast gang did the VIP (high-end) Paramount tour and thought it was excellent, but I didn't get any details from the group that went.

One of the reasons I joined in on your TR is because I know you're a friend of PIO, so you must tell a good story and so far I'm pleased!

Well, thank you very much...I consider that a high compliment.

I wouldn't be looking in 2014, but thanks for the heads up. We have all our 2014 large trips booked. Between those and any D23 events that might pop up requiring us to travel, we're pretty full for the next 18 months!

Maybe you can convince PIO to come over and meet you for the BSM tour in a few years!

The WB tour looks fun! Maybe when our day to day lives calm down we could play tourist for a bit and do that for a day trip. I'm impressed with your knowledge of movies and TV shows. I haven't seen or heard of half of the things you talked about. However, fellow Chuck fan here! I'm sad the series went off the air, it was a good one!

I'm a bit of a pop culture geek even before I became such a Disney geek. I actually don't watch a lot of TV anymore, but am still aware of what is out there. Lately haven't been watching many movies either, our daughter is at the age where she stays up later but is still too young to allow to watch most "grown-up" movies. (I originally wrote "adult" movies, but realize that has a whole different connotation!)

I think Chuck actually lasted just long enough - it was a great show, but the premise was somewhat limited as to how long they could stretch it out. Since it was always on the verge of being canceled, it seemed like we were lucky to get 5 seasons!

Yup! That about sums up LA driving and especially in Hollywood. It's even worse when something bad like an accident happens! I hope you enjoy chauffers for the rest of the trip!

I know, we even saw terrible traffic on the Hollywood freeway at 9 PM on a Saturday night. I just couldn't take that.

Loved seeing what you were up to before we all met up. You can see what we were up to on my facebook page under photo albums.

We rented from the Hertz at the hotel. I felt bad for that guy in there by himself. At 9am there were like 5 people waiting to get cars. & just him. He was slammed. Sounds like it was the same when you returned yours. :( We didn't gave to do anything but put the key back in the door since ours was just a day rental & they were closed at 4ish when we got back.

I'll have to check out your FB photos! They definitely seem poorly prepared at that location. You would think at such a high-end hotel it would be more organized. Honestly, as soon as I called they straightened it right out, but I still had a somewhat sleepless night over it since I didn't get the bill until late in the day and couldn't call about it until morning. Since I didn't get a receipt I didn't know how much trouble they would give me about it.

Would you believe I forgot to sub in??? (Excuse me whilst I fix that now. Back in a 'mo......)

Great updates. I think I'm going to have to try to make it to Warner Brothers one of these trips. I actually like that foodie section of the Farmer's Market. Love looking at the food.

I see Alison joined in as well. My fingers are burning! Seems like I could sense someone typing about me in here. A Cali DisMeet sounds great. The question is.....which year?? :confused3

The famous WB water tower – rumor has it that if Jack Warner asked you to meet him by the water tower, it meant he would say to you “Whose name is it on that water tower?” to which you would reply “Yours Mr. Warner.” At which point he’d say “That’s right, it’s my name, and your fired!”

:scared1:

This fire escape façade was used for the part of Minority Report when Tom Cruise was jumping onto guys with Jet Packs going up the side of the building. (Of course this was digitally made to look much taller – much like Mr. Cruise.)

:lmao: Very rarely when I use that smilie do I actually look like it, but I totally did this time!!!

but more famously as the Seaver household from Growing Pains:

"Show me that smile, ooh show me that smile..." My favorite TV theme song ever! (Listening to it now after reading this!)

&to finally the modern Chris Nolan take.

AWESOME!!! Love those movies!

Last but not least, probably the most famous Ford Anglia ever:

Another one I would LOVE to see!!

After that, they then took us through the prop department, which included seeing the preserved Central Perk set of Friends:

So cool!

the Mentalist it was cool to see how it was very different in that you could walk through the sets, just like you would with a real office environment.

DH and I love that show, that would be cool to see.

I was fortunately able to straighten it out pretty easily, but I was rather not enamored of the Hertz experience.

Be assured all "Hertz's" are not that bad!! ;):rotfl:

Gee, that sounds like a great excuse the come back to Disneyland! I'm afraid it might be a ways off, though. Certainly not next year.

:lmao: Very rarely when I use that smilie do I actually look like it, but I totally did this time!!!

Glad you liked my joke!

Methinks you would've really enjoyed this tour!! :goodvibes

I would have a greater trust in you Hertzes than in THOSE Hertzes! :lmao:

Great TR so far! I doubt I'll ever do ABD so I'm excited to hear all about yours, or at least what you can share. Can't wait for more!

We brought our stuff into the lobby where we met our adventure guides Dean and Matt. They checked us in and gave us our room key. Our room had a great view of the Hollywood sign!

And a few shots of the inside of the room:

The room was a good size and nicely enough furnished – nothing special, but you were certainly paying for location at this hotel. Unfortunately what our room also had was an intermittent loud wooshing sound in the room. We luckily laid down for a brief nap and couldn’t help but notice it. When we called down, the desk immediately knew the issue was due to the service elevator. They told us more rooms would be available later so we should call back around four. So we took a walk down to Hollywood Blvd to see the sights. On the way through the Hollywood and Highland plaza, which was designed to look like something out of “Intolerance” I think:

Just across the street was the El Capitan theater:

Next to that was the theater for Jimmy Kimmel. We had tried to get tickets for Monday night, but weren’t able to. That would’ve been cool.

Up the street a bit was the Chinese Theater, which of course is a familiar landmark to Disney fans:

Hollywood Boulevard is known for the walk of fame, but also for all the weirdos dressed as superheroes or people handing out CDs that they then want you to pay them for if you take it. Your best bet – avoid eye contact. Basically they are all begging for money and I just was totally turned off by it all to the point I wanted to leave. In addition I stepped in a big wad of gum, which certainly didn’t get me psyched for the afternoon either. Crowded and touristy, the area actually reminded me of home – or more specifically Niagara Falls.

I didn’t even want to bother taking pictures of the stars because of the mobs, however as we headed up the block to a CVS, I saw this and had to snap a pic.

We went back to the hotel and while Ulana got some make-up at Sephora, I changed rooms.

They moved us down to the 13th floor via the service elevator (13th floor of the Hollywood Hotel – because of Elevator issues – I’ve heard this one before!!!!) – same as the previous night at the Hilton – but this time with a city view and overlooking the top of the Dolby Theater, the home of the Academy Awards.

Any stars laying around by the pool?

By the time Ulana got back, it was time to get ready for the welcome dinner. I have to admit, probably like everyone else, I was a bit apprehensive about meeting everyone. Many of the folks here I’d spent the last year chatting with on the DIS in preparation for our trip, but it still feels a little weird meeting people that you know but don’t really know. We all met on the mezzanine floor of the hotel outside the restaurant. (Since these folks didn’t ask to be included in this Trip Report –I am going to use people’s DISBoard names rather than actual names.)

I was happy that we were able to sit with “Disneykiwi” and “Brightie”, two sisters from New Zealand. They had flown in only the day before and were still getting acclimated. “Disneykiwi” is in a wheelchair, but she sure doesn’t let it slow her down! We also were with the Shaun Thompson and Craig Williams from the Podcast team, as well as “Will” (not sure his DISBoard name) and “roryh22”, who both were FODs (Friends of the DIS). “Will” I hadn’t talked to before the trip, but “roryh22” was on chats quite a bit. This quartet was often referred to as “the boys” by our group. Dustin West and Pete Werner were the other two folks representing the DIS Podcast team.

Now I am not going give too much info about our fellow travelers (except to say it was a great bunch of people to travel with) nor going to “critique” them in anyway. Suffice it to say we had a great time with whoever we sat with during the trip. At this stage we were still in the getting to know each other phase, but by the end of the trip I could consider most of them friends.

However, I do want to make a little comment about the folks from the podcast. I don’t want this to be taken wrong, because they seemed to be very nice, but I was a little disappointed in the level of interaction with the DIS folks. I guess what I was expecting was since this group had been brought together by the DIS, I thought that they would really mix up with everyone and try and make sure they got to know everyone – do a bit of schmoozing and play the "hosts". Now, Peter Werner – the man himself – did play to some of that doing introductions at dinner and throughout the trip, and we had a great conversation with him and Dustin at breakfast on Day 3. But Pete wasn’t really around all the time as he both had other things he was dealing with his business and also he was having some really painful back issues. The other guys, however, seemed very quiet and didn’t really talk much. That first dinner was a great example. I tried to engage Shaun and Craig a bit, and while Shaun answered questions when asked, Craig was really quiet. DW sat next to them later in the trip and said it was sort of the same thing. “The guys” seemed to hang out together and do things as a group – though the exception being “roryh22” who we talked with quite a bit throughout the trip. Again, it might’ve been they were exhausted from all the travel or they were focused on the “work” - they did a lot of filming - or perhaps just shy with a bunch of strangers. Again – I hope that doesn’t come across as harsh or anything, they really did all seem like nice guys, and it did NOT detract from the trip at all - It doesn't even rate going in the "bad" category - I am just sorry I didn't get a chance to get to know them a little more! I guess I should’ve planned to join them for a late night at Trader Sam’s and do that over a beer or two.

Back to the TR: The dinner was really fun, I don’t want to go into too much detail about what goes on for those that haven’t done it. There was a pretty decent meal. There was salad, mashed potato, a roasted vegetable medley, Salmon (which we didn’t eat) chicken and beef. The food was OK, not great. The deserts were cheesecake and chocolate cake and were both really good. They also gave us an anniversary dessert of Tiramisu.

Next up: The first "surprise"?

After dinner was our first “surprise” while I will generally try to avoid spoiling surprises in this trip report, I’ll leave that for what I would consider to be good surprises.

Our “surprise” was a trip through the Madame Tusseaux’s wax museum. This was another “Niagara Falls” moment for me as in “Really, a wax museum?”, but it actually was a lot of fun. Though maybe that was mostly because there were pouring wine freely at the dinner, and by this point I was a little bit drunk.

Mary Hart wanted to interview us all on the way in:

A couple of other stars were hanging in the lobby, apparently Carrie Underwood couldn’t get into the main lounge:

I think Simon was a bit harsh on his review of Nicholas Cage’s recent movie choices, but DW thought he was spot on.

I always wanted to meet Angelina Jolie just for this purpose!

But DW wanted to separate her from hubby Brad.

I had to get a picture of Salma Hayek because I think she’s the breast…er I mean best!

We *LOVE* Justin Beiber in our house - NOT!

Julia Roberts and her giant mouth have always terrified me:

“Disneykiwi” and I posing with Charlie Chaplin:

The KING!

“AURENCE!!!!! AURENCE!!!!!”

“Next time we say we’re going to Bolivia, we’re going to Bolivia.”

Wait, are we on the great movie ride?
Alternate joke: "What's this I hear about a Fistful of Fastpasses?"

The godfather and I make plans to ensure the trip goes smoothly:

“Do the lambs still call to you, Clarice??”

To Be Continued!

“Why, this car is automatic, It's systematic,”

“it's Hyyyyyydromatic!” (“Lee Disney” and her DH join the fun!)

DW told me after this that she was having the “time of her life” and she’d “never felt like this before”:

Shatner would’ve appreciated me giving him the "Andorian":

Guess which one is “Dumber”!

Mr. Spielberg said it was OK if I just directed this one scene:

But Quentin wanted me off the m*****rf****n set:

Though he said that DW was perfect for the scene with Uma:

In the end, Marty said I wasn’t cut out for a life in pictures:

So I turned to playing piano with my good friend, Sir Elton:

Suddenly, Spidey asked me to “stick around”:

…while DW decided to try and bond with Daniel Craig.
Sorry, that one was especially bad – let me try this again: DW was feeling both shaken AND stirred when…
No? then how about...DW couldn’t mind her M’s and Q’s when meeting her favorite superspy...
Oh forget it…DW with Daniel Craig.

“ymxbfalcon” showing off her mad Terminator skills!

One of our favorite bad-***** – Jackie Chan!

Hey, it’s Robert Downey Junior!

Which is the real Zorro?

And in the “Oscar Room” good pal Morgan Freeman

Meryl Streep showing off more cleavage than Salma Hayek

JACK!

The Fabulous Betty White:

After that, everyone turned in for the night. (I would’ve gone a little longer.) We were surprised when we got back to our room with an extra treat. This will be kept the one secret from a very brief (relatively) 1st day of the adventure. One last shot of the nearby Roosevelt Hotel:

Wait! It’s time for:

The Good:
Warner Brothers Tour
Corned Beef Sandwich at Magee’s
Meeting the ABD DISers

The Bad:
Loud elevator noises in our hotel room.
Ghetto Superheroes on Hollywood Boulevard

The Ugly:
GUM! I stepped in GUM! What's wrong with you people! Throw out your GUM!
LA traffic. No wonder they shoot at eachother.
Taking the service elevator to the 13th floor of the Hollywood Hotel.:scared1:

Woohoo....Welcome Dinner up! I agree with you about being a little nervous meeting everyone Pete, but it didn't seem to take long for the nerves to go away....again it may have had something to do with the free wine pouring.

You are spot on too about the Podcast team. I think we all discussed this at various times during the trip. I did not book the trip with the intention of getting to be best friends with them, but expected more interaction. I booked for the extra perks & in that part, the DIS exclusive experience did not disappoint!

Going to Madame Tussad's is not something we would ever have done on our own, but we were surprised how much fun we had! It was a fun surprise!

Great job so far!!!!!

Hi Pete, great TR so far! I'm thinking we have to return to CA so we can go to Warner bro studios. It looks amazing. We chose not to because we thought there'd be so much studio time with Henson and Disney but that wasn't the case. Excited to read the rest of your report. Great pictures too.

Great update, Pete! Like you, I was a bit skeptical about the idea of a wax museum, but it really did turn out to be a lot of fun.

I felt the same way about the podcast team. I think they may have just been worn out after Hawaii and Alaska, and, on top of that, I know they were busy filming everything, but the lack of interaction was still a bit disappointing.

“ymxbfalcon” showing off her mad Terminator skills!

I still can't believe that you all talked me into getting onto that bike! (And I had no wine at dinner, so I can't even use that as an excuse. ;) )

Hello! :wave2: Thanks for sharing your trip report. I've been very much enjoying what you have posted so far.

I am doing the DIS ABD trip in December 2014 and I'm beyond excited. I appreciate you not posting spoilers for the big stuff. I did read your warning about staying away from the trip report in general, but but I'm the kind of person who will flip to the last page of the book every single time - I just can't help myself. It won't spoil it for me, if anything it will make me more excited.

We spent 10 days in Southern California in September 2012 so we did most of the things you mentioned in your pre-days. I really enjoyed your WB studio tour pictures as your experience looked to have quite a few differences than mine - it's interesting how they have changed it up a bit, or maybe it varies on a weekday vs weekend.

I have to say that I agree with you 100% about Hollywood Blvd. I have been there twice, and absolutely loathe it. Ghetto superheroes is a great description! Staying in this location is one of the only disappointments with the ABD itinerary - I'd be fine with never going back there again!

Looking forward to your next installment!

Loving your TR. Thanks for the mention of Chuck, too. We were fortunate enough to visit the set about 3 years back. We stood in courtyard of the apartment complex, around the fountain, but you could look through the see the insides of a lot of other sets, including the Buy More. DH and I really miss Chuck, and you're probably the first other fan I've found!

And I'm enjoying everything else too!

Great update! I loved how you made fun with all the wax figures! Do they let anyone get that up close and personal or did you guys have a sort of private tour where they let you get up with the figures? I haven't been to the Hollywood Madame Tussouds. In fact I think the only one I have been to is in Victoria BC, so this one appears to be quite different!

Fantastic pictures with the wax works!

Looks like a great way to spend the evening. Would you recommend your hotel? We will have DS with us.

Your wax museum pictures & captions had me laughing in my cubicle this morning! Great job with the 'poses' and with the witty captions. Too funny!!!

I also love that you got moved down to floor 13 in the service elevator of the Hollywood Hotel. I mean, you couldn't make that stuff up if you tried.... ;)

Sounds like a great first day & lots of fun!

Very true, the WB tour was much better than what they showed us at Disney, which was really a shame.

Right - it was disappointing, but did not detract from the trip.

And the bike suits you - I assumed you were going to go out and buy one!

Well, don't say you haven't been warned. I will avoid much of the "backstage" portion of the information. So I will still definitely leave you with plenty of surprises. But I would still tell you that you really shouldn't read this!

Overall, I'd say the ghetto superheroes on Hollywood Boulevard don't affect the hotel stay much. The hotel itself is very nice.

Loving your TR. Thanks for the mention of Chuck, too. We were fortunate enough to visit the set about 3 years back. That would've been SOOO cool to see the sets. Did the Buy-More look as big as it did on TV, or was that a trick of the camera? I think the show had a very small, very loyal fan base. I would always tell people that action-comedy is absolutely the hardest genre to get right - especially in a 1-hour TV show format, and they were pretty much able to stick the landing most of the time. (The show had me in the first episode with the introduction of Chuck's BIL "Captain Awesome".) I do think they wrapped it up pretty well, and it was on long enough to leave before it got too stale. (OK - I absolutely hated the plot of last few episodes where they had Sarah forget her years with Chuck, which in the end made me really glad the show was over.) I also loved their use of Genre guest stars (Sarah Connor & Sam Beckett as Chuck's mom and dad!)

Great update! I loved how you made fun with all the wax figures! I will admit this was a different presenation than the one I've been to in Niagara Falls. In that one the figures were all in Diorama's, and in general you couldn't approach them. Here they were just out and about and you could (and were encouraged to) interact with them. It made the experience much better! The tour was nothing special, there were other non-tour people around while we were there.

Fantastic pictures with the wax works!

Looks like a great way to spend the evening. Would you recommend your hotel? We will have DS with us.

Well, we have little in the area to compare it to. But, here is my feeling on it:
The location is very centrally located to Los Angeles/Hollywood attractions. The hotel itself is very nice and the room we stay in was very nice but only had a king bed. I would assume they also have rooms with two queens/fulls instead. The only negative was the room by the elevator but once we moved it was great. I would probably call it a 4-star hotel (Out of 5.)
The standard rate for this hotel is about $300-350 US per night. I saw it as low as $250 US, which was still more than I was willing to spend for the night before stay - Understand that is a lot of money for a hotel from my point of view. You certainly can stay cheaper than that in the Los Angeles area, but for location, if you can get it in the $250 price range I would say it is probably worth that. However, I would only use it as a based for seeing Hollywood/Burbank area. If you are more interested in other areas (the beach, Disney) and would be ranging all around LA, I wouldn't stay there. You are paying mostly for location.

ABD Finally posted the digital pictures. Another 1000+ pictures available. I probably won't share a lot of these because they are mostly of other people, and those "other people" already have access to them, but I will share a few. So, a few bonus pictures for your viewing pleasure.

They had us "dress up" for a picture on the opening dinner. ACTION!

Good evening ladies and gentleman....

I was trying to pull off:
"KKKKHHHHAAAAAAANNNNNNNN!"

So, "Brightie" posing with Danny Zukow, but what I find most interesting was Dustin "Benjamin Braddock" Hoffman standing looking like some kind of serial killer. And where the heck are his shoes!

I have no problem with posting pictures of our adventure guides. One of the many great things about Matt and Dean was it seemed like they were having fun along with us at times. (How could you not?)

Matt:

Dean:

"No Dean - I will NOT be your date to the Lone Ranger premiere!"

Thanks. I'm thinking of staying there for 1 night only at the end of the trip. In all the time we've headed to LA, DS has never seen Grauman's or the Hollywood Walk! So, we would go and be able to walk around (making sure we make no eye contact) around the area. No need to head to the beach or Disney because we should have done that at the start of the trip.

For that, I would definitely recommend the hotel. It is about 20 minutes to an hour to the airport (depending on traffic).

I wouldn't worry about eye contact, however, don't take their picture, and whatever you do, do NOT take a CD if someone tries to hand it to you!
