Had been about 6 or so years since we'd eaten at YSH and since the other couple with us are fans of Ruths Chris and Mortons, we figured they would be a good test as to how YSH measures up. Our ADR's were for 6:10 and we had about a 5 minute or so wait until we were seated. Zach was our server that evening and took good care of us throughout the meal. The first order of business was--as usual--drinks. The ladies both ordered wine (Mrs U had something called a Florida Trilogy Cabernet that she liked a lot) , my friend ordered a Long Island Ice tea, and I had a Amber Bock Draft. I must comment on the glass that my beer was in. It was almost a goblet--thick and heavy, with a stem and a wide mouth. A bit like the old beer glasses you might have seen in the 1700's in Williamsburg. Didn't make the beer taste any different of course, but it was an unusual presentation. Should also add that YSH has by far the best beer selection of any of the Signature restaurants--30 bottles, 3 drafts.
After the bread arrived, we ordered our appetizers. Our friends and Mrs U all ordered the Caesar Salad with aged parmasan and garlic sourdough croutons.. All three ate ALL of it and pronounced it the best they've had in a while. I went for the Seared Maine Diver Scallops served with a mushroom salad tossed with warm smoked bacon vinaigrette. The were FOUR medium sized scallops on the plate (perhaps one of those was the missing one from the California grill??) and at $13.00, it was a better value (and better tasting) than the scallop entree at CG.
Entrees were up next and although I had by eye on the Lamb Two Ways, Mrs U talked me into the Chateaubriand for two. We often used to order that years ago and hadn't had it in quite awhile. We were disappointed however with the presentation--every other time we had it it was carved and served tableside. But not at YSH. It came out already plated the same as the other entrees. The meat was cooked perfectly and delicious even tho it is not grilled on the oak fire as are the steaks. But I do think they could carve it tableside. For $80 you ought to get at least that--.
One of our friends got the 12 oz NY strip, while the other got the 8oz filet. Both were done medium exactly as ordered and both were termed "excellent". They also ordered a side of creamed spinich which we all shared.
Dessert was up next. Our friends split the Year of a Million Dreams dessert which was Grand Mariner strawberrys , lemon cornbread, white chocolate gelato and balsamic reduction. I got the Sorbet trio ( cherry, pear, and lemon-basil) while Mrs U got the New England Blueberry and sour Cream tart. This came with vanilla panna cotta and blueberry swirl gelato. All were excellent.
The meal took about an hour and a half start to finish. Should add that there were the fewest # of kids here than in any of the other Signatures we tried.
Though our friends said YSH may not be exactly all the way up there with Mortons or Ruths Chris, they liked it a lot and would definately go back. So would we.
