Sorry if some of this is *old* news.

DS and I ate at Jiko last night.

The cinnamon beef sticks are no longer on the menu. I was HEARTBROKEN!

We both had the beef tenderloin, it was as usual simply amazing.

The monkfish has also been taken off the menu.

The cheese platter is still on the menu, but I think has changed quite a bit since I had it a couple years ago.

And Uncle Romulus--if you ask for "Ron" you aren't going to get "THE" Ron. We had Ron as a server, and he was very good, but not the person I was expecting. Also, Shelly was tending bar at Victoria Falls last night.

I had called to get an ADR Wednesday, and was told at first there weren't any available, then was told that we could ahve one but it would be a table for four. OK, whatever, fine with me.

We got there at 6:00pm, left at about 7:30, and there weren't a dozen parties in teh entire place the whole time we were there. My advice if you can't get an ADR, get there early and you should hav eno problem getting seated.

Thx for the update. Jiko is one of our fav' restaurants. I will miss the Monkfish, but perhaps it's a seasonal thing. We dined there in April (party of 7) and everything was great.

The monkfish is not on the menu due to conservation concerns.

We ate at Jiko on Sunday night. DH had the Filet, I had the Scallops. Both meals were AWESOME. We also shared the flourless chocolate cake with peanutbutter ice cream. I am drooling just thinking about it.

We had an ADR for 8:00, but we were starving and went down around 7:00 and we were seated right away.

Yikes!! First Pete at Victoria and Alberts and now (possibly) THE Ron at Jiko...gone???
This dosen't bode well for our October dinner reservations.
Always a puzzle about ADR's isn't it?? Sounded like the place would be almost full--instead it's almost empty.
Thanks so much for the update.I suppose it would have been nice if I had bothered to find out Ron's LAST name :confused3 :confused3

I ate there last Saturday evening. We did not have an ADR but were seated right away. This was at 6:00 PM.

These were one of my favorite items on their menu. DRATS! :sad2:

Thanks for the update.

Monkfish was one of our favorite items on the menu. We're going to miss this?

We can't wait to go back.

Love Jiko's African Wines (Sparkling, White, Reds and Ports). Any new ones that you tried on this trip that you would recommend?

The monkfish has been replaced (possibly temporarily and possibly permanently according to our server) by a halibut dish using the exact same preparation (cornmeal-dusted, panfried, with sweet potato crispy strips and "vegetables of the moment" in a butter sauce).

Fear not! I had the halibut last week after having enjoyed the monkfish roughly 8 times in the past, and I think I may have actually preferred the halibut. It was a very generous and high-quality piece of fish and that sauce would make roadkill edible, in my opinion.

Um, appetizing... LOL!

Forever a Princess--I had a glass of the Indaba Chard at Victoria Falls before dinner, and a glass of the Rust en Vrede Merlot with dinner. While they are both adequate, neither is anything to write home about, and they've both been on the list for at least a couple of years. They did a ppear to have a few new items on the wine list, but I'm not positive, and don't even recall what they were.

Also Jodi wasn't at the small bar inside Jiko, there was a guy there. Hopefully she just had a night off, but I didn't ask. Michele is still working at Jiko, saw her there, she's a fabulous server, and next time I go if Shelly isn't available I"ll ask for Michele.

Anne, I was there two weeks ago and was sorry that the beef rolls were too.
I recall that they had replaced the banana sauce that had be served with them as well--do you recall what the 'replacement' sauce was served?

Not sure what you're saying, but when we ate there the other night, the beef rolls were entirely gone, so no sauce was served with them.

I was reading the menu on All Ears and it looks like the quail is off it to. :confused3

The beef rolls were gone when I was there (which used to be served with a banana & something dipping sauce)--I just can't recall now, what sauce replaced the banana sauce, as (at least when I was there) we were served 3 sauces (as previously when the beef rolls were served) only the banana sauce had been replaced (apparently when they made the deletion of the beef rolls). Do you recall what the sauces were that you were served?

Sorry if I had not been clear earlier. :)

Michelle - Thank you for the review of the new halibut entree. I didn't get a chance to have the monkfish because I had a special when we were there (thinking that the monkfish is a "regular" so I'd have it next time). Glad to hear that the halibut is good. :sunny:

Thanks for the review we are eating there in OCT and are really looking forward to it. This will be our 1st dinner @ Jiko's

The last time I had the beef rolls was probably about a year ago (gosh--has it been that long??) and they came with the bananna sauce then.

yes, Anne, It's been "awhile" since they offered those -- perhaps my question could be more easlier answered by asking it this way;

What were the dipping sauces you were served? :)
