A fearless trip report- May 12-18th 2011

Sorry the first knee scrape took place in Disney World. I'm glad your mom was there with her 500 pound survival kit.:thumbsup2 Also, good news that you found your pin lanyard.

That's really cool that your friends are having boys too. That will be a lot of fun to watch each others' families grow up spending time together like you used to do before kids.

My Mom immediately produced an entire first aid kit from her 500 lbs purse. (I know, all of us kids always make fun of her giant purse with enough provisions for an arctic expedition until we need something, then we’re suddenly all thankful!) and Everett was doctored up real quick with a little antibiotic ointment and a band-aid.

This is extremely familiar. My group laughs at my backpack full of 'necessities', too, until they need a ziplock bag, handi-wipe, Bandaid, sunscreen, scissors, Advil, or any of a number of things I bring along. ;)

Poor little Everett getting a boo-boo but a milestone to get it at WDW! (sorry - that didn't sound right but what better place to have a memory at ). How gracious of your mom to go eat at Y&Y while baby slept and so you all could enjoy Tusker House! We ate there on our last trip for the first time and enjoyed it (mostly my DS28 who is a vegetarian - we always planned our meals around where he could eat and we were glad they had so many choices). And even super glad you got your lanyard back! I recall another TR last year where a boy had lost his and how hard the CM's worked at replacing all of his pins (his parents had taken previous pic of it so it made it easier to recall what pins were on it). It isn't the same getting a duplicate lanyard & pins when they hold such sentimental value - I lost one pin off of mine last trip and it was one that was hard to get.

Sorry you missed rope drop with the detours. It is hard enough to get up in time to make rope drop with a toddler...it totally isn't fair when you are thwarted like that for reasons beyond your control!

I heard absolute horror stories about the detours that day...assume this was May 14th or 15th, right? I was at the Destination D event and some people reported delays of up to an hour (basically what you experienced) in getting to the Contemporary for our conference that morning. I was never so grateful to have been staying at the hotel without the need for the commute that day. I tend to leave it til the last minute, without a lot of extra time, and I would have completely missed the first session.

So sorry to hear about your little guys scraped knee. We had something similar happen on the 1st solo trip I took with my daughter when she was 4. We just stepped off the bus from CBR outside the MK, and DD starts skipping down the little incline leading to the bag check. Down she went. I was so upset with myself because she was wearing new sandals that were too big for her narrow, narrow feet, and I know for a fact that is why she fell. Bad mommy!!! Her knee was really bleeding bad and we had to make a beeline for the First Aid station. Unlike your mom (the Bomb), I didn't come prepared. Bad mommy again!!!

Glad to hear you liked TH for lunch. We loved it for breakfast.

And thank goodness you got that lanyard back...too funny that the CMs thought you would be more concerned with your passes and room keys (that could be replaced) over your pins.:rotfl:

I'm glad you had a great meal at Tusker House. I haven't been there since it became table service, but I would love to try it someday. And thank goodness you found your lanyard! It would have been terrible to lose all those pins, as they would have been quite difficult to replace.

Joining in. I just found your trip report (followed you over from another report). I have gotten to your mother's arrival with Barfy, :lmao: and I love your sense of humor!!!! I especially enjoyed your comment that most of D.C. would not be taking part in the rapture. :rotfl2: Going back to read!

Thank you for reading along! :goodvibes I'm glad you're enjoying our adventures

Thank goodness they had your lanyard!

Yes, I was worried! It was a happy ending!

All caught up. You have a wonderful mother to take your DS so you can sleep and enjoy 'the big kid' rides! Looks like you had a wonderful night at Jellyrolls. Can't wait to read more. :)

My mom is a saint! I am so thankful that she is willing to join us on our Disney trips!

Boo for Everett getting hurt! Colby hates to hold our hands and only moves at one speed: fast! So we have at least one new bump, bruise or scrape a week. The joys of having a toddler!

I am glad you found your pin lanyard! I think we all have those moments of panic on our trips where we either think we have lost something or really have lost something. Those are always terrible moments!

Looking forward to seeing what kind of fun you have in Dinoland!

Yes, that might have been Everett's first scraped knee, but it has not been his last! In fact, I've been trying to get him to the photographer for his 18 months photos, and every time I book a sitting, Everett manages to injure himself. I don't want photos of him with big bruises, scrapes or fat lips, but if I want photos, that might be what I get!

I hadn't even considered how the much the crocodiles would enjoy a tasty toddler treat. Now I'll have to hold on to the boys extra tightly through that part. At least Landon. He'd be down with all those crocs in a second. :rotfl:

I'm glad you found your lanyard again. It would be fun to have friends that you all used to hang out with all having boys at the same time as you. Maybe all the boys will grow up and be Disney friends.

I would be awesome if they all grew up to be Disney buddies! I hope they continue to enjoy Disney, Everett better- if he knows whats good for him! ;)

Poor little Everett with his scraped up knee! :sad1: But, thankfully your mom was there with her 500 lb purse to save the day! :lmao: Sounds like y'all had a wonderful lunch! And I'm so glad you were able to get your lanyard back.

You mentioned that you did a photopass share....can you tell me how that works & how you get into one?

Thanks!

I found the photopass share that I joined on facebook. If you have a FB account, you can search for the Disney photopass share page. On that page there are all sorts of posts from people looking to host shares. How it works is that you all split the cost of the CD, and then when you get back from your vacation, you upload your photopass pics into a joint account. When everyone is done editing, the photopass host orders the CD, and then makes copies for everyone in the share and mails them out.

The draw backs are that you have to wait a little longer for your CD than if you ordered directly from Disney, and other people will see your photos (if you are worried about that), and you also run the risk of having the photopass host take your money and never mail out the CD.

I paid $20 for my photopass share, and I figured if I was out $20, it would be sad, but not the end of the world. Since I had access to the joint account, I could still order the pictures I wanted (or the whole CD) if the host tried to scam us. Generally I find Disney people to be very trustworthy, and I guess that someone could run a scam, but it really would be a lot of work for just a little bit of money.

1st scraped knee wasn't my favorite milestone, but it had to happen sometime!

It is really fun that we are all entering this new phase of our lives together, I'm sure its going to lead to lots of adventures over the next few years!

This is extremely familiar. My group laughs at my backpack full of 'necessities', too, until they need a ziplock bag, handi-wipe, Bandaid, sunscreen, scissors, Advil, or any of a number of things I bring along. ;)

Yup, Moms are under appreciated! ;)

I was thrilled that they found my lanyard! I've been collecting pins since 2005, and I am very attached to my collection. I would have been very disappointed to loose some of them.

Yes, it was the 15th! You were lucky you were at the contemporary, it was a mess driving around! I don't think it would have been any better using Disney transportation, because I've been on Disney buses during marathon weekend, and it seems like the bus drivers are just as clueless about the detours as the guests are!

I'm sorry your daughter hurt her knee! Its always the worst to get hurt on vacation! :sad2: Don't feel like a bad mom, I didn't have any first aid supplies either! If it wasn't for Grammy, we would have been making a stop at first aid too!

I'm glad you had a great meal at Tusker House. I haven't been there since it became table service, but I would love to try it someday. And thank goodness you found your lanyard! It would have been terrible to lose all those pins, as they would have been quite difficult to replace.

Tusker house was awesome! :thumbsup2 I really liked it as a CS, but it is even better as a TS, definitely give it a shot one day!

Sorry I haven't been updating- DH was gone all last week for a business trip and holding down the fort took up all my time!

Episode 22- the update with a sad goodbye

After our awesome lunch, our destination was Dinoland! I know that most Disers dislike the kitschy wonder that is Dinoland, but I love it! I love the backstory, and all the funny sight gags. In my previous life (before Everett or B.E.) I worked as an archaeologist, so I appreciate a lot of the jokes in Dinoland. Even though I didn’t work with dinosaurs (paleontologists= dinosaurs, archaeologists= people), a lot of the dig experience is universal, so I really understand the references to “dig culture” and the subtle rivalry between scientist and local.

Personally I think Chester and Hesters Dinosaur Treasures is one of the best themed shops in all of WDW. Have you ever really looked at all the vintage dinosaur toys that line the ceiling, or the awesome train that wraps around the store. It really is an under appreciated treasure.

Anyway, enough geeking out.

We headed over to Dinoland, not just because its my favorite, but because my mom had spied a Pluto and Goofy meet and greet while she was roaming around with Everett. Pluto is one of my favorite characters, and he is really growing on DS too! Since I didn’t want to revisit the scene of the crime at Camp Minnie Mickey, I thought this would be a great place for DS to visit with some characters.

The line was pretty short, but it unfortunately had the chain switchbacks (otherwise know as decapitation specials), commonly seen in the queue at Peter Pan’s Flight. DS thought that the chains WERE the attraction, and I was having a hard time getting him to stop touching them and swinging them back and forth. I ended up removing him from the line to preserve life and limb of our fellow guests, and I let DH and Brian stand in our place. This, I know, is another breach of WDW line etiquette, but I figured that everyone in line would rather have DH and Brian hold DS and I’s place than be smacked by swinging chains from a recalcitrant Everett.

I guess I don’t really know what to do in this situation, If I was a real stickler for line rules, I would just take Everett away and not let him meet the characters at all. Really, I don’t think that it too fair to Everett, who would enjoy the experience, but has a hard time with standing still and patiently in line. He is fine in other queues, but those chains are just too much of a temptation. I feel like we are at a tough age because he really needs to behave, but he isn’t the best listener and he is too young for time outs or other punishment, because he is not old enough to really understand or make the connection yet. I chose what I thought was the best compromise, having two proxies stand in line for us, and we switched places when we got to the front of the line. It was an even exchange of bodies, so the people behind us would not have to wait any additional time, and Everett did not disturb anyone waiting.

All that work was definitely worth it, because Everett just adored Pluto (or Tuto, in Everett-speak).

Pluto thought that Everett’s backpack was a riot, and he took hold of Everett’s “leash”. It was a really fun interaction!

Poor Goofy got the shaft , because Everett only had eyes for Pluto.

We did manage to get a photo with both characters before we headed over to our next destination- Triceratops Spin.

I was a bad mommy at the MK and didn’t take Everett on Dumbo, so I figured we needed to get in our allotted hub and spoke spinny ride time that is mandatory when you travel with toddlers. Everett didn’t seem to notice that the dinos were not elephants, so we were in the clear.

Luckily the wait was short and there wasn’t a dangerous swinging chain in sight, so we were good while waiting for our turn. Brian decided to join us, and my mom was the dedicated waver, and before long we were taking off for our spin over Dinoland.

Everett did seem to enjoy the ride, with his favorite part being the control stick for the dino. It’s a good think I’m not prone to motion sickness, because Everett took great pride in jerking us up and down as quickly as humanly possible, while squealing with glee. He is a real daredevil, I can’t wait until he hit the height requirements for some of the big rides!

I thought we might have some tears when it came time to get off his triceratops buddy, but I think Everett might have spied something even more appealing while aloft. We were headed to the boneyard next, and I think DS’s toddler playground internal GPS was alerting him to the fun ahead.

I hadn’t spent too much time at the boneyard previous to this trip, because this was DS’s first trip as a walker, and playgrounds really weren’t on my radar before Everett embraced running. I was interested to explore a little bit, and I thought we’d have the chance to see the whole playground. Well, I under-estimated the appeal of a water feature. When we entered the playground I let DS roam, and he immediately honed in on a waterfall feature behind the play jeep. I wasn’t intending on letting him get all wet, but DS had other plans. A waterfall, a cave, AND a jeep- well that’s about as close to little boy heaven as it gets. He had a blast running back and forth in the water, and we pretty much didn’t leave that spot for good 20 minutes.

When DS was fully saturated, we took him off to the bathroom to clean him up. If you were in Animal Kingdom that day and saw someone holding a little boy under a hand dryer, that was me! (it worked great, in case you were wondering!)

At that point our group really needed to get going. Brian had to head home, and my Mom had to get to the airport. Brian made plans to stop by the resort and have dinner with us and his wife the following night, so we knew we’d be able to see him one more time before our vacation ended, but this was our last day with my Mom.

We had such a wonderful time with my mother, and I was so sorry to see her go. I knew that she was sad to be leaving also but this is certainly not going to be our last trip to WDW. We definitely will all be returning on a big family trip with my brothers and their wives next summer, and Mom, Everett and I are taking about sneaking away on a trip for just the three of us next spring.

DH and I decided to leave the Animal Kingdom and head over to the Magic Kingdom to take in some rides that we had missed our first day and to maybe catch Wishes. My Mom drove us over to the Contemporary where she dropped us off before heading back to POR, and then on to the airport.
It was sad, but its tough to be too sad when you are steps away from the Magic Kingdom.

Up next- I accost Disney fans, and Everett interrupts a special moment.

Great update! The pictures with Pluto holding Everett's leash are so cute!

Oh my...I could substitute the name Colby for Everett and this could be my trip report! Colby loves playing with those chains in the lines at the local amusement park here...and he has a magnetic attraction to any water that he might play in! We were at the zoo today and he got soaked playing in the little misters they have.

Our last trip we did not do Dumbo either...we got our fill of "spoke spinny rides" on Aladdin! Colby loved making us go up and down as well...and he loved gettins spit on by the camel!!

It took me a couple days but I just read your 1st trip report and got caught up on this one! :goodvibes I have learned so many things about traveling with an infant/toddler, which will certainly help when we take DS later this year after he turns 1. The most important thing I have learned was to rent the rocker from A Baby's Best Friend! I actually just did that today, and I'm so glad I did because we rock DS a lot at naptime and during the night when he wakes up. I didn't even know a service like that existed before your TR! Hopefully it will save us from any sleepless nights while on vacation.

I also got a little misty-eyed at the pictures of him getting his first haircut. We have a time reserved for DS to get his 1st haircut at the Harmony Barber Shop in November, although he will not have very much hair to cut! I just couldn't resist making that special memory in his life a special Disney memory as well. So I was happy to see the pictures to get an idea of what to expect when we have our experience there.

Gotta say, your "thrifty" DH reminds me a LOT of mine, right on down to the no texting on his phone! He makes me use this free texting app he found that takes FOREVER to text with him. Anything to save a buck. :lmao:

I have really enjoyed your TRs, and Everett is just precious. I especially love that video of him playing in the boneyard. Looks like he is having a blast!! And the pictures of him with Pluto are so cute!!

So much fun running around in the water, and he wasn't a bit hesitant to run around with those dinosaurs roaring in the background! Simple things are so often some of the sweetest moments of the trips. We've dried clothes off at the hand dryers before, too. ;)

I'm sad to see your mom have to go, but so glad you are discussing a spring trip with just the two of you and Everett. I love Disney World in the spring.

And the summer, and winter, and fall.
Who am I kidding?

But really, spring is special because everything is so alive after a drab winter.

That is so funny! I'm glad Everett is not the only little boy entranced by swinging chains.

I'm sure Everett would also love Camel spit, I'll have to keep that in mind for our next trip! :)

Thank you so much for reading along! I have learned so much from TRs featuring babies and toddlers, and I'm really happy to return the favor. I'm sure you will have a magical trip!

So, I finally figured out how to post videos on youtube (seriously, what took me so long! :confused3 ), which is actually really easy.

Here are some links to video clips that we took, I'm sorry they are a little out of order, but now I can add the videos where they belong!

Here are two videos of Everett running and dancing on an empty Main Street before our Crystal Palace breakfast. (they are both pretty short)

Loved the update! I don't blame you one bit for how you handled the Pluto line with Everett. It's so hard at that age to try & make them understand that they have to wait their turn AND be good doing it.

The pictures of Everett in the Boneyard are priceless. You could really tell how happy your little guy was playing there. Such a cutie!

Thanks for the info about the photopass share. I'm thinking I'm going to check that out on FB the next time we go to WDW.

I can only imagine how much fun Pluto had with Everett and his backpack! :lmao: That makes for some fun and easy character interaction.

It seems to me that toddlers + water = fun & a wet mess. Every time. No exceptions.
The pictures tell the story though, and it looks like he was having a blast playing in the Boneyard.

Loved the videos! All adorable!!! Definitely has me thinking about the next little one getting his first hair cut at the world!

Man the poor kid in the next chair at the Barber Shop doesn't sound like he's having very much fun!! :lmao:
