A fearless trip report- May 12-18th 2011

Ok, I am coming out of lurkdom to tell you how much I am enjoying your trip report. It took me a couple of days, but I am all caught up. Sounds like you are having a great trip and congrats on the Dooney bag. I is cute. I have 6 or 7 regular Dooney's, but I never bought a Disney one as I wasn't sure I would ever use it outside of Disney. Do you use it at home?

Looking forward to more!

Thank you for reading along! I'm so glad you are enjoying our adventures! :goodvibes

I do use my Disney Dooney at home (whenever I'm not saddled with a diaper bag). I have never been the most "fashion forward" person, so I'm not too worried about looking like a Disney dork. :rolleyes1 The fact that it is a designer purse is actually a huge step forward in for me being fashion conscious at all!

I have actually gotten some really nice comments on it, people always want to ask me about where I got it, etc. Its a good conversation starter.

If you want to know what is really crazy, even when I have my diaper bag I am still carrying a Disney themed item, because I have the Petunia Pickle Bottom diaper bag from the Its a Small World collection, in which the pattern is inspired by artwork from Mary Blair.

**Love your Diaper Bag!**

I really like the Dooney purses but I think I would be afraid to use it and get it dirty! I'm weird like that - one of the reasons why I love the Vera Bradley bags since I can wash them.

Thank you! I really love it too! There is just something about the pattern that screams "Mary Blair" and every time I look at it, it makes me smile!

I know that many people are afraid of getting them dirty, but I'm more of the mindset that they were made to be worn, and that a little dirt gives them character. I guess thats why I am always baffled as to how people on ebay have purses that are in such good condition! I couldn't resist taking the tags off after I bought something- I guess this is why I am not a good collector!

I've finally caught up! I'm loving your trip report! It looks like Jellyrolls is a fun time! We considered going on our last trip, but considering 3 of the 4 of us work half in a piano bar at home, we weren't sure how much fun it would be haha

Episode 20: The update in which we take the road less traveled

The morning of the 15th was a bittersweet one for us, because it was the day that our friends and my DMom had to say goodbye and join back up with the real world. We had so much fun with everyone, and I wished they all could stay with us for the rest of the week, but even knowing that there will be meet-ups and trips again in our future did not make it any easier. :sad2:

We had said our good-byes to Bryan and Amy the night before, since they planned on sleeping in, and then taking advantage of being in the Orlando area to visit Ikea and pick up some stuff for the baby’s room.

Shane and my DMom would be joining us in Animal Kingdom for part of the day, and then they were both going to have to leave to catch their flights. Shane would only be able to join us for an hour or two before he had to return to POR for his ME bus, but my mom had a later flight, so she would be with us for most of the day.

We all met outside of our rooms pretty early that morning, with the anticipation of making rope drop. I helped my mom finish up her last minute packing, and we were soon on our way. The plan was for my DMom to leave directly from the park and take the rental car back to the airport. When I was loading everything in the car I realized that there was one tiny snag in the plan- Everett’s carseat.

We couldn’t let my mom take the carseat back with her to the airport, but we also couldn’t carry the carseat around AK will us all day (although I do think I caught my DH considering it, if only we had some bungee cords…).

Really the only practical solution was for my DMom to go back to POR on her way out, and leave the carseat in our room. She would have to leave a little earlier, but it wouldn’t be too bad. I gave her Everett’s room key, that way she could get into the room, and just leave the key on the table when she was done.

After all that mental exercise, we were on our way, and everything was going swimmingly, until we appeared to hit a giant traffic jam. I looked at the clock on the dash, and confirmed that it was only 8:30 in the morning, what on earth was going on? We inched up slowly, to find that the light was out and there was a cop directing traffic, except he was directing us in the opposite direction of where we needed to go. The road ahead of us was all blocked off and lined with orange cones. It was then that I remember that this morning was the iron man triathlon. Uggg, I understand that these races are very lucrative for Disney, but it always ends up being a complete disaster for traffic.

Disney had apparently set up a very complex detour, one that took us on a tour of the less traveled parts of Disney property. I swear it felt like we were in a triathlon of our own, racing by the roadblocks trying to beat the clock to make it to rope drop. At one point I was so frustrated that I suggested that we flag down some of the competitors and have them run us to the gates of the Animal Kingdom. Come on, these guys are supposed to be Iron Men, they could carry us and the stroller on their backs and get us there much faster than this crazy convoluted detour.

At one point I swear we were on a dirt road crossing a swamp and I began to despair ever making it to Animal Kingdom, I wasn’t even sure we were on property anymore, I think we had been routed through the Everglades! :scared1:

Right when I was about to get out the emergency flares, I saw the majestic peaks of Everest rising out of the early morning haze and clouds of humidity. We had made it, finally, and only 45 MINUTES AFTER WE LEFT POR! Iron Men, you are on notice- for making me miss rope drop. I know that you are lean, mean fit machines, but nobody stands between a Disney commando and rope drop. You have been warned! ;)

Well, after all the drama, we stopped to take some quick photopass pics to prove we actually made it out of that detour morass and into the park.

Shane is so silly- I like how he posed like he was crashing our photo!

Then it was time to get down to business. We headed over to Africa to get Safari fastpasses and then hurried on to Asia to conquer the forbidden mountain.

Photo0515FourBySix.jpg

My mom doesn’t ride Everest (although I think she might have once), so she volunteered to wait with Everett. Shane also doesn’t ride Everest, because he thinks its too scary, however, he decided to go and ride THE MOST SCARY RIDE IN DISNEY- Dinosaur.

Does he not realize that those Dinosaurs are trying to EAT YOU! The only time I ever rode Dinosaur I curled up in a fetal position so tight that they had to get a crowbar to wedge me out of the ride vehicle. NEVER AGAIN! I’ll take a few negative Gs and a frozen yeti (another bad pun :rotfl:) over being dino mincemeat any day.

They had just opened up the single rider line, so DH and I were able to walk right on, not once but twice! When we got out the second time, my mom or Shane were no where in sight, so we decided to grab a quick snack before we went to look for them. Both of us had forgotten to eat breakfast in our room that morning, so our tummies were hungry. I had Mark wait at Everest just in case someone showed back up, and I headed down to Drinkwalla to score us some yummies.

They didn’t have a huge breakfast selection, but they did have Mark’s favorite (cheese Danish) and a delectable looking donut curler, so I was pretty happy. Throw in an iced chai and I was practically in a sugar coma of happiness.

When I headed back with my goodies, I ran into my mom and Shane arrived (thankfully in one piece) shortly after. With everyone reunited we headed back over to the Safari to use our fastpasses. On the way over to Africa, Shane got a text from his traveling partner, Chantal who told him that there had been a change to his flight, and that he had to come back to POR to get on the ME. We were all pretty bummed he had to leave earlier, but we said our goodbyes and he headed back to the real world.

Shanes story did not end here, and it didn’t end well, as it turns out they changed his flight yet again(!) and he didn’t end up leaving Orlando until almost 9 pm that night. He was (rightfully) very angry with Spirit Airlines, since they changed both his arriving and departing flights multiple times and caused him to miss precious vacation time.

Well, we pressed on to the Safari without Shane, now we were down four members of our entourage! We did have a really great safari though, Everett enjoyed the animals, and I’m sorry for no pictures, but I was too busy hanging on to Everett for dear life to risk taking out the camera. DS really saw no reason why he couldn’t climb down off the truck and visit face to face with the rhinos and cheetahs, and thought I was being just a terrible mother for holding on to him and not letting him go.

I always get especially worried when we go over the Nile crocodile pit, its just a little too close for my taste. I’m sure that it would be the exact moment when we are crossing over when Everett breaks free and bounces over the edge. Those crocs look like they are just laying there, waiting for a tasty toddler morsel to venture their way.

Everett especially liked the end when we were chasing the poachers, bumpy rides, spraying geysers and simulated gunfire are right up his alley, he is all boy!

When we had successfully saved Little Red from the poachers (they don’t call him that any more, do they?) and had exited from the safari, I saw a Photopass CM. I usually don't see Photopass people at the safari exit, so I asked if he was taking pictures. He told me that he was, and that they were overstaffed that day, so he got put in this location. He did tell us he had some great ideas for shots and he delivered!

first he had us pose near the sign, looking confused

then he took us over to the waterfall to get some family shots

This is such a great shot of my mom and Everett! We got it framed in a Disney frame and gave it to her as a thank you for all that she did for us during the week.

After our photos, I got a text from Brian, who was meeting us for lunch (not Bryan and Amy, but Brian who we had made plans with at World Showcase the night before, I know it gets a little confusing!).

We met up at the exit for the safari, but then we had to decide what to do. It was around noon, and our ADR at Tusker House wasn’t until 1 pm. Really, the smart thing to do would have been to go to Tusker house and ask them if they would set us early, but I wasn’t thinking. I knew that Everett was starting his downhill slide, and I figured we should do something to entertain him so he would make it to lunch. We were near camp Minnie Mickey, so I thought some characters would be entertaining.
As we walked over I crossed my fingers that the lines would be short- would they be?

I saw photographers by the waterfall as well, they must have been overstaffed the whole monthof May! I liked the location though, they should have one there all the time. :thumbsup2

Love all the photopass photos! I should really go ahead & buy the CD next time we go & let them do more photos of us. I really love the ones in front of the waterfall. And the one at the beginning with the stranger in the background is too funny! You should post that in the photo bomb thread! Can't wait to hear about the character lines in Camp Minnie Mickey. I'm sure Everett had a blast!

Traffic jam in WDW, that's just wrong! Great pictures! How sad to have everyone leaving you!

Rough traveling day for your crew... both by land and air. Looks like a fun morning though. I thought your discription of Dinosaur was great, even though I do enjoy both Dinosaur and Everest. :lmao:

Those are some really good photopass pics from AK!:thumbsup2

We were leaving AKL to go to AK for our morning ADR at Tusker House. I wondered why they had roads closed. Now I know.

I'm glad you finally made it to AK! Once you made it to the park, it sounds like things went pretty well! I love being able to get onto rides like EE multiple times in a row! That is when getting up so early pays off!

I know how you feel about having to toddler wrangle while on the safari! The last time we were on the safari, it was raining, too, so I had a wet toddler to wrangle!

I've finally caught up! I'm loving your trip report! It looks like Jellyrolls is a fun time! We considered going on our last trip, but considering 3 of the 4 of us work half in a piano bar at home, we weren't sure how much fun it would be haha

I can understand how it might not be fun to be reminded of work on vacation, but you should give Jellyrolls a shot, its a really fun place and the only piano bar I know of that regularly plays Disney melodies!

I saw photographers by the waterfall as well, they must have been overstaffed the whole monthof May! I liked the location though, they should have one there all the time. :thumbsup2

I agree! I think the waterfall pictures were some of the nicest photopass pics from our whole vacation!

We went through a photopass share, otherwise I don't think I would have gotten the CD. I'll admit I can be a little cheap, and $100 for a photo CD seems really steep. The share was a little more of a hassle, but I think it was worth it, especially since I'm not the best at remembering to take pictures :rolleyes1

Traffic jam in WDW, that's just wrong! Great pictures! How sad to have everyone leaving you!

yes, it was sad that everyone was leaving, but we weren't too sad, because we knew we still had some Disney days ahead of us. ;)

Rough traveling day for your crew... both by land and air. Looks like a fun morning though. I thought your discription of Dinosaur was great, even though I do enjoy both Dinosaur and Everest. :lmao:

Dinosaur (shudder!), that is one scary ride! Dh keeps asking me what I am going to do when Everett is tall enough to ride, and I told him that he'd be in charge of protecting Everett from the dinosaurs, there is no way I'm going on! :rotfl2:

We were leaving AKL to go to AK for our morning ADR at Tusker House. I wondered why they had roads closed. Now I know.

Iron men, we have your number! *shakes fist* :snooty:

I kinda wish there were seatbelts on the safari so I could strap Everett down. He is one squirmy worm, and it makes me really nervous!

Episode 21: The update in which there will be blood- (take 1)

As we headed down the path to Camp Minnie Mickey, it looked pretty empty, so I was hoping that would be a good sign and that the lines would be short at the character trails.

Well… I was wrong. There was a Festival of the Lion King show in session, so that explained why the place was a ghost town, but apparently all the people in the character meet and greet lines didn’t get the memo that they should have entered the show...

Oh well, we were here now, so I decided to suck it up and get in the shortest line, which was for Chip and Dale. I got Everett out of the stroller, which he was pretty pleased with for the first few moments, but then he let us know in no uncertain terms that he wasn’t waiting in any lines.

Chip and Dale were off to the side, not in a “designated” character trail, so the line was pretty open. I figured it would be OK, if DH took Everett to walk around the immediate area while I stood in line since he wouldn’t have to cut through a line of people to rejoin us, and he would be in direct eye sight the whole time. I knew that this was probably pushing the unwritten WDW line rules, but what can I say, I’m a rebel!

I turned away from DH and DS for a second to talk to Brian when I heard an ear piercing screech. This was not a normal “I don’t want to do what you’re telling me to do” scream, this was a scream of pain. I immediately bolted over to where DH was crouching over a wailing DS, who was sitting on the ground with a scraped and bloody knee.

You know, I was looking forward to many milestones on our Disney vacation, but Everett’s first scraped knee was not one of them. :sad2:

Apparently DH let go of DS hand for a minute, and DS used this golden moment of opportunity to take off running, and he tripped and fell.

It wasn’t a bad scrape, nothing that would need medical attention, but you couldn’t tell that to Everett. It was positively the end of the world. He was very put out that we did not immediately call 911 to have ambulances with sirens blaring pull right up to this very spot.

My Mom immediately produced an entire first aid kit from her 500 lbs purse. (I know, all of us kids always make fun of her giant purse with enough provisions for an arctic expedition until we need something, then we’re suddenly all thankful!) and Everett was doctored up real quick with a little antibiotic ointment and a band-aid.

At this point I figured that we were done with characters, and we really should just go over to Tusker house and see what they could do for us. I put Everett back in the stroller, and we made our way back over to Africa.

Of course by the time we got back over to Tusker House poor little injured DS had fallen fast asleep. All the excitement had just wore him right out. I didn’t figure that this would be too much of a problem, hoping that we could just wheel DS into the restaurant and let him sleep while we ate, but at that point my DMom spoke up and admitted that she wasn’t jazzed about eating African food, and that she’d much rather just take Everett over to the Yak and Yeti CS and get something there.

That ended up working out best for everyone, my mom got to eat food she liked, and Brian, Dh and I had a lovely quiet meal at Tusker House. (I apologize that there are no pictures, I realized that I left my camera in the stroller after my mom had wheeled Everett off.)

This was my first time at Tusker house (since it had become TS) and I was really anticipating this ADR. I had heard such good things about it, and I just LOVE Boma, so I had very high expectations. I’m happy to say that the restaurant not only met, but exceeded what I was expecting. The food was delicious and fresh, there was an awesome variety, and each item looked and tasted better than the last.

Our friend Brian had never eaten there before either, so it was a first all around, and thoroughly enjoyed by all. I know that we will be back, I much preferred Tusker to the Yak and Yet TS, although we will have to keep the tastes of our dining companions in mind when we make plans to eat there again. While there were some things that my DMom would have enjoyed (like all the yummy desserts) there wasn’t a huge amount of entrée food she would have eaten, so it was a good choice for her to do Yak and Yeti.

When we first settled down to eat, I took off my pin lanyard and hung it on the back of my chair. I had left my bag with my mom, so I figured they’d be safe on the back of my chair.

We had a really nice time together, it reminded me of our trips back when we used to live in Jacksonville, before we had DS. We used to go down about once a month and meet up with Brian and just enjoy the parks. Brian and his wife are expecting their first child, a little boy, in September, so I’m really looking forward to our future trips. We have a boy, and both Bryan and Brian (confused yet?) are having little boys also, so we’re looking forward to many rides on Pirates of the Caribbean and lots of Buzz Lightyear meet and greets. The six of us used to have so much fun as couples, and I’m really looking forward to continuing making Disney memories with them as families.

When we were finished stuffing ourselves silly, we decided to do the only logical thing- go ride Everest again. We took advantage of the single rider line, and the three of us were face to face with the yeti in no time.

It was while I was getting off Everest, when I realized that I was missing something- my pin lanyard! I had left it hanging on the back of my chair at Tusker house!

I let DH and Brian know where I was going and I high-tailed it back to Africa, hoping that it would still be there. I rushed into the restaurant and over to our seats, but the lanyard wasn’t there. I was starting to get very worried that it was gone for good! I let the hostess know that I had left my lanyard and I showed her where we were sitting. She promised that she’d go look in the back for me, and told me not to worry, that things get turned in all the time.

While she went to look for my lanyard, the other CM at the podium assured me that Disney would be able to re-issue my park tickets and replace my photopass card. I knew that she was right, but I was still disappointed that I might to lose my pin lanyard. I had worn all my Alice in Wonderland pins that day, and some of them have sentimental value and would be difficult to find again, even on ebay.

Right when I was about to give up hope, the CM came rushing out with my pink lanyard. My waitress had turned it in right before she went on break, so it took her some time to locate it. I was thrilled it had been recovered, but the CM told me that she might not want to give it back to me, because it had such awesome pins. She admitted that she was a big Alice fan, and that I had some pins that she had never seen before.

Reunited with my pins, and determined to never leave them behind again, I headed back to Asia. While I was gone, DH had found my Mom and Everett. DMom had eaten her lunch, and Everett had just woken up and was eating his. Once Everett was finished we headed over to a much maligned by the Disney fan community, but much beloved by me, portion of the park.

Joining in. I just found your trip report (followed you over from another report). I have gotten to your mother's arrival with Barfy, :lmao: and I love your sense of humor!!!! I especially enjoyed your comment that most of D.C. would not be taking part in the rapture. :rotfl2: Going back to read!

All caught up. You have a wonderful mother to take your DS so you can sleep and enjoy 'the big kid' rides! Looks like you had a wonderful night at Jellyrolls. Can't wait to read more. :)

Boo for Everett getting hurt! Colby hates to hold our hands and only moves at one speed: fast! So we have at least one new bump, bruise or scrape a week. The joys of having a toddler!

I am glad you found your pin lanyard! I think we all have those moments of panic on our trips where we either think we have lost something or really have lost something. Those are always terrible moments!

Looking forward to seeing what kind of fun you have in Dinoland!

I hadn't even considered how the much the crocodiles would enjoy a tasty toddler treat. Now I'll have to hold on to the boys extra tightly through that part. At least Landon. He'd be down with all those crocs in a second. :rotfl:

I'm glad you found your lanyard again. It would be fun to have friends that you all used to hang out with all having boys at the same time as you. Maybe all the boys will grow up and be Disney friends.

Poor little Everett with his scraped up knee! :sad1: But, thankfully your mom was there with her 500 lb purse to save the day! :lmao: Sounds like y'all had a wonderful lunch! And I'm so glad you were able to get your lanyard back.

You mentioned that you did a photopass share....can you tell me how that works & how you get into one?

Thanks!
