A fearless trip report- May 12-18th 2011

Oh my goodness, so sorry about what your family & Karolina's family are going through. It is never easy to lose someone you love, but it's all the more difficult when it is something so sudden that you have no time to prepare yourself for. Lots of prayers your way.

I just found your TR this morning and am all caught up. I love reading the reports with toddlers so I can get a glimpse of what it will be like to bring DS. We live near DC as well, and he is used to being out and about like Everett.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your future SIL. My prayers are with both your families.

Receive my deepest condolances for the loss of your sister in law.
Hope God will give your family and especially your brother the strength to go through this difficult time.

I am so sorry to hear of your family's loss. I can't even imagine what her family must be going through. Organ donation is a very giving gesture, I'm sure that would have made her very happy. Lots of prayers for your brother and her father and brother and to everyone grieving over such a tragedy.

I am so sorry for you and your family's loss.
I think it is so great of your family to make the choice to donate her organs so that something positive can come from this horrible tragedy.

I have to say- this really hits home with me. A dear friend of mine since childhood, who is now 34 years old, recently underwent a double lung transplant (he has Cystic Fibrosis) up at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston. He is recovering well from the surgery and we plan to go up to visit him in the next few days. He was on a waiting list for so long.

I know there is nothing that can take the pain away after such a tragic loss, but I hope your family will take comfort in knowing that donating her organs may have saved numerous lives.

I'm so sorry to hear of your family's loss. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you as you go through this difficult time.

 I am so sorry for your loss. I have "seen" you on several other TRs we both read and have been meaning to come over and check your report out. I am thrilled to find such a funny, well written TR to follow, with such a cute little monkey as the star of the show but so sorry to be doing so at such a difficult time for you and your family.

Thank you everyone for your kind words, prayers and support. We returned from the funeral yesterday, and now we are on the long road to healing. Its going to be tough going for a while, but our family is very close, and I know we will get through this together. I keep telling myself that there will be happy times ahead, and we will get to a place where we can remember Karolina with smiles and laughter instead of tears.

I just wanted to share some of the things that I learned through this experience, and maybe our tragedy can help someone in the future. Here is my Public Service Announcement-

If you own anything of value- a car, a house, a boat, jewelry, an award winning show dog- anything! Please protect your family and have a will drawn up. Karolina and my brother owned a home together, but they did not have a will, therefore half the home passes to Karolina's next of kin- her mother. This is going to be a very difficult legal situation, and it is a hard enough time without having to go through probate and dealing with estate lawyers.

If you have debts, a mortgage, a car payment, private student loans or private loans of any type, make sure you have enough life insurance to cover the debts. If Karolina and my brother had both taken out life insurance, than they wouldn't have to be worrying about who is going to pay the mortgage or what they are going to do about the cars. Also Karolina had a large amount of private student loan debt (not federal loans, which discharge upon death), now Karolina's mother is going to have to meet with lawyers to deal with this issue as well.

Life insurance also comes into play because funerals are expensive! I know that no one expects the worst, especially when you are young and healthy, but a little bit of advanced preparation could really spare your family from additional hardship.

My DH and I have both gone through this, but he is in a high risk career, but I think that this is not on the radar for most young or middle aged adults. It is important, so please take some time to consider your options.

I'm going to get back in the TR saddle by the end of this weekend- thank you all for sticking with me, I really appreciate it!

It's good to see you back :) Healing is a long and difficult process but it seems you all have more support than many people which will help :grouphug:

I agree that we should all think about what would happen should a sudden death occur even at a young age. My late husband didn't have any life insurance when he passed away at age 40 but luckily in a sense we didn't have any debts other than a credit card in both of our names. It is a lesson learned when you find out the costs of funerals and additional expenses you never knew could occur in such a situation. Thank you for passing along your insight to all of us!

Glad you're back!

You make some really good points there. I'd like to think we have everything taken care of if it should ever be needed, but it can be a very difficult situation for the family.

I'm so sorry about your family's loss. I know this must be such a hard time for all of you.

I'm glad to see that you are back and thanks for sharing those points! It is definitely important to be prepared.

It's definitely good to have you back! :flower3:

And those are very good words of wisdom you're passing along.

Glad you are back and thanks for the message about being prepared at any age. Not something anyone likes to think about, but definitely should.

I was a few days behind here and just read of the tragic news. I'm so sorry for the loss. Everyone is in my prayers.

And that's a very good point on having a will. DH and I keep meaning to do it, but haven't. We only have 1 loan (DVC), but even that-we need to do something with it, I would hate for that to be put on our parents, who wouldn't ever want it/use it. And to just have to deal with that sorta legal stuff during this time of mourning and loss....:sad2:

Hope all is well as it can be! :goodvibes

Ok, so I'm back in the TR saddle, I hope to be back to my regularly scheduled frequent updates.

Episode 24- the update in which Everett gets licensed to drive

Once we were in Tomorrowland, we headed right over to a DH all time favorite- Buzz Lightyear. I do enjoy the ride, but I suffer from can’t-figure-out-which-dot-is-mine-itis, which I believe is a terminal condition. Needless to say DH kicks my butt every single time. The wait time was short, so we were fighting the Evil Emperor Zurg in no time!

Everett also seems to really enjoy the ride, even though we are way too competitive to let him shoot or steer the vehicle (sorry kid, no fun for you!) He likes watching the red numbers flash, and is pretty content with pointing at them and repeating incompressible gibberish, which I’m pretty sure (if you had a toddler-ese translator) would sound something like “Mom, why are you letting him win, if you’d just let me play I’d give him a solid beating” . :lmao:

Since I was sufficiently whooped, I decided that the next ride would be a little more my speed. Earlier in the trip when we were in Tomorrowland, Everett kept pointing out the TTA and yelling “CAR!”, so I thought he would enjoy taking a spin on the cars in the sky. We got right on and settled in for a relaxing tour of Tomorrowland.

There is just something about the TTA that is quintessential Disney. It is one of those rides that really make you feel like you are on vacation, and that you have arrived in the Magic Kingdom. Maybe its because I rode it a lot as a kid, maybe its because of the views, but either way I hope that it never disappears.

After our relaxing ride, our stomachs were rumbling, and it was time for dinner. Since Dh is never one to turn down chicken strips, and since Everett ate there with no complains two days before, I decided not to reinvent the wheel and head right over to Cosmic Rays.

We pretty much had a carbon copy of our dinner the day before, but we mixed it up this time by getting a table by Sonny Eclipse. He entertained Everett, which made for a much more peaceful meal. While we were eating, I was looking out the window towards the speedway, and the wheels in my head started spinning.

I asked DH “Do you think Everett might be tall enough for the speedway, I bet he’ d really like it”
DH: “What is the height requirement”
Me: “I’m not really sure, but I think its pretty short, maybe 32 inches, do you think we should try”
DH: “Its not like they are going to kick us out for measuring him, let’s give it a shot”

So, after we had finished up, we walked across the street to the speedway, to see if Everett qualified for his first height restricted ride. Of course, Everett was not going to make this easy. I tried getting him to stand under the sign, but he was WAY more interested in squirming around and touching the height bar and generally being obstructionist. I ended up kinda mushing him up against the sign, and it looked like he just made it! Just to make sure I wasn’t seeing things or being crazy, I asked the CM who was standing right near us if he looked like he made it. The CM barely glanced at Everett but said he was fine. I was a little shocked after hearing stories here on the DIS of CMs militantly enforcing the height requirement, to run into such a lassiez-faire attitude, but It did look like he made it, so we decided to risk it and get in line.

Ok, Everett, lets cooperate

Looks like he is good to go! :thumbsup2

I hadn’t ridden the speedway since a high school band trip in 1996, so I was actually kinda excited to ride. I don’t think DH was over the top thrilled, as you can tell by his expression, but he was a good sport, and Everett was really digging all the “CARS” that went by while we were waiting.

waiting in line

When we got up to the front of the line I put Everett down and motioned to the CM loading the vehicles, saying “you probably are going to want to measure him”. She took one look at him, said he was fine and gave us our starting position. I found all this to be very strange. I didn’t want anyone to think I was trying to break the rules and sneak my kid on under the height requirement, but I guess it was fine. Maybe its like reverse psychology, CM figure that you are not going to push them measuring your child if you think they are under the limit, so they assume you are fine?

here we go!

Well we got our car, and I was hoping that Everett could ride on DH’s lap and steer, but the CM told us he had to sit on the seat next to us. No problem, DS still got to steer to his hearts content, and it guess it didn’t really matter much that he couldn’t see over the dashboard. If you ask DH its no worse than when I drive. :rotfl:

We got off the ride with one happy little boy and one big Disney milestone behind us!

Yeah for Everett driving !:cool1: and yeah for now knowing that Meadow can drive in Sept.:thumbsup2

I too used to suffer from the same problem on Buzz as you...but my last ride I scored over 350,000. There is hope for you. Keep trying. The desire to win will over come!:rotfl: And I will beat DH this next trip. I really will. :lmao:

Glad that you are back. Sorry to hear about all the legal things going on.
Hope it will turn out ok.
It's indeed very important to make sure you have everything organized, may something happens to you.

Great milestone for Everret, he drove his first convertible ;)
I hate that ride cause it's so bumpy, but I have been on it too many times to count because both my sons loved it!!
