A DISers Book Club!

It took me awhile to finish Pillars as well. It's sooo long and wordy. I love it though. :)

I'm back again looking for book suggestions for my DD15 - ya'll gave us some great suggestions this summer.

Her English teacher is telling her she needs to read more challenging materials - something a teacher can tell her but her mom doesn't know what she is talking about. Oh well.

All suggestions are welcome - she loved Harry Potter, Twlight series, Lord of the Rings (has not finished all three)

Hi Anne,

Here's a link to the International Reading Associations Young Adult Choices booklist. It's annotated and would be your best bet for high quality, high interest adolescent literature.

I came here looking for some inspiration on what to buy for my kindle app for my itouch. Trying to pick something is very hard! I don't know how to choose! So I then started looking up fantasy books at Amazon and ran across The Demon Awakens by one of my favorite authors RA Salvatore. And it was free! So I'm a very happy camper at the moment. I believe they offer the first book in the series for free to get you hooked to buy the rest. Works for me. :thumbsup2

I recently read Goodbye Glamour Gals
on my Kindle. It is the story of women pilots during WWII. I really enjoyed it and it was only $1.99--totally worth the price. I don't know if the book has been printed or not, I can only find it for the Kindle on Amazon. Hope everyone is enjoying some good reads!:goodvibes

I'm on good reads! :rotfl: In fact, I started looking at book lists there, but the ones I was interested in weren't on kindle. I also have Stanza for my itouch. I've been getting some of the classics for free to read on that one.

I thought this would be a great place to get some advice. DH wants either a Kindle or Sony Ready for xmas this year. I've heard both good and bad things about the Kindle and Kindle 2. Any advice would be appreciated. TIA.

I think you need to go back about 10-15 pages to read the reviews on the Kindles.
Oh man.. xmas gifts .. the calendar has no mercy...

Happy Thanksgiving Katherine (and John). :)

I just finished The Lost Symbol. I hated the ending. HATED IT!

Reading The Monster of Florence now. It's about an Italian serial killer.

A buit gruesome....but it takes place in and around Florence, Italy, so I'm willing to take the gruesome to get the Florence.

Thanks for the thread shout-out on the podcast, Kevin! Hopefully we can get some new book club "members"!!

I just finished "Waiter Rant", which made me think of you with your dining reviews. Have you read it?

Has anyone read "Losing It: And Gaining My Life Back One Pound at a Time" by Valerie Bertinelli? A friend just gave me a copy and I'm just not sure I want to read it.

Ok, my two favorite books this summer are: (1) Moloka'i by Alan Brennert (it's about a 6 year old girl in Honolulu that is diagnosed with leprosy and is forced to leave her family and move to the island Molokai which is a leper colony. (2) The Thirteeenth Tale by Diane Setterfield - this one keeps you guessing until the end. I couldn't put either book down!

There is still a leper colony on Molikai.
This island was opened a few years ago for people to visit.
I will have to check this book out.
Thanks.

I am in the exact same place you are! I want a Kindle so bad but I have a huge pile of books to get through and I love going to the library and bookstores!

I love threads like this because it opens up new books to read. I usually go to the LA Festival of Books just so I can go to the author lectures to find new authors to read.

I am finishing up a David Baldacci book, The Collectors, (nothing too exciting but entertaining) now and then I'm going to read Peter and the Starcatchers...I just bought The Time Traveler's Wife this weekend but I have been promising DBF's 15 yo DD that I'd read Peter so that is next.

This is a fun thread - thanks for starting it!

I just bought The Time Traveler's Wife yesterday.
I have so much reading to catch up on.

Hi all! New book club member here! Thanks to Kevin for pointing out this thread on the podcast!

I finished The Lost Symbol a couple of day ago. I enjoyed thebook overall ,but I thought the ending was weak. After all of that build up, when we got to the big reveal, I was left mumbling "Seriously? That's it?" :confused3 But if you liked DaVinci Code and his other stuff, you'll probably enjoy the book over all. I found it to be an easy read, and I found the background info to be interesting. I have a feeling that I will be doing some reading about noetic science in the coming weeks.

Right now, I am re-reading Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books, starting at the beginning. They are always good, light-hearted fun reading, and I can save some cash by reading them again instead of buying something new, until something new really catches my interest. Hopefully, I'll get some ideas here!

I am now reading a really good historical fiction To Dance With Kings. It takes place during the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XVI. The story centers around a fan maker and her descendants. I don't always enjoy 'romance' type books but this one has enough other historical content to keep me going.
Its about 610 pages long and I am about 3/4 of the way through it. I found a couple other books from the same author (Rosalind Lakes) that I am going to pick up next.
I have the day off today and no kids around so as soon as I can pry myself away from the boards I am going to read :woohoo:
I haven't listened to the PodCast yet (I save those for my drive to work) but am looking forward to hearing Kevin mention the thread :yay:

I've been listening to Atonement and am about halfway through it. I want to yank Briony out of the book and slap her into next week. If I was reading instead of listening, I would have given up already because it took 10 chapters for the action to get going. I will finish it, but I don't think I'll be recommending it.

I came across this book a couple weeks ago and thought it looked interesting (I am a HUGE fan of Anthony Bourdain's books). Did you enjoy "Waiter Rant"?

Just finished "A Bone To Pick" by Charlaine Harris. Its and Aurora Teagarden mystery. It's quick and fun. I like to read those types while I'm on shift at work.
Also, I'm about to finish "Night Shift" by Stephen King. Great for Halloween. I really enjoy his short stories.
