A Commando on Valium - A 7 Day Solo Trip at AKL ***Update 3/23 page 19

I have been super busy and away from the boards, but I got on tonight and was doing some catch up...I am all caught up on your trip report and eagerly awaiting more and hoping that things got better for you! I can't imagine being miserable at disney...actually I can some what since I had a cold when we were there last year. Blah. Congrats on the house. The pics you posted looked nice! :goodvibes :thumbsup2

Hi Everybody, I'm working on an update right now. In the meantime, I got my CD from the Photopass share I did. Here's a few pictures from Day 1 -

This one gets the Stitch seal of approval because my face was so dang blurry

Another Stitch worthy photo, but mostly because I made myself look like a spazz in this one!

After what easily felt like longest morning in my Disney history, I headed back to Africa via the train. Not like I had much of choice in the matter, right?

After I got off, I picked up a Safari FastPass since it was close by and then the plan was to head to Yak and Yeti for lunch. I had been looking forward to trying it, I am a big Chinese food fan, so I thought this would be perfect. Oooff...was I wrong. I had the Honey Chicken and a soda. The chicken was too dry and the rice was too saucy. And the chicken pieces were way too big. I was not impressed.

After lunch I decided to head to Kali since it was so hot out. The posted wait time was 70 minutes, so I got a FP. Since it was going to be a little bit of a wait for the FastPass time, I walked over to Flights of Wonder. I did learn at least one interesting thing on my Safari tour, FOW is not a Disney show. They contract with a guy who runs his own show. I was told that the guy does it as good as Disney could want, no reason to create their own shows. That being the case, it's very well run and Disney-esque.

The only disappointment of the show was that I had thought that it was an Owl that always did the "buzz" shot for the people that get called up on stage. Instead, it was a big crane type thing.

I always love the end when they bring out the Eagle, even if it is the cheesiest part of the show.

My Safari FastPass time was up, so I trucked back to Africa. As I was walking to the FP entrance, the CM at the ice cream cart says "Want to trade?" I didn't quite hear him and just kind of laughed, it didn't really occur to me that he meant trade pins. Then he says, "I have pins!" I am sure I looked like an idiot, but it was cool that I got my first pin trade! I traded a Lady and the Tramp cat pin for a Beaver. I'm sure the CM thought I was even more crazy now than he probably did before, but the reason I wanted the Beaver pin was that I was pretty sure it was supposed to be the same Beaver that you win on Toy Story Mania. I did confirm later that it in fact was, so I was pretty excited about it!

The safari driver was great, he even stopped in a couple places even though they are not supposed to stop. I attempted to get some video, but I won't post it since there weren't many animals and it was super shaky. Shaky truck combined with my already shaky camera skills does not work out too well!

I did get a few good pictures though

Unfortunately, a lot of the pictures had this woman's stomach in them...ooops

After the Safari, I walked the Pangani trail. I spent a while talking to one of the CMs about the two Gorilla Troupes. There is a traditional family troupe with one Silverback and the females and the kids and then there is a bachelor troupe. The bachelor troupe is an experiment that AK is trying out. It's 4 gorillas, two old silverbacks and two younger males. They pretty much stay out of each other's way and it's looking to mostly be a success so far.

My FP time for Kali was up so I took a walk to Asia. The posted wait time was still 70 minutes, but after I got through the FastPass line and joined the rest of the queue it was clear that it was NOT 70 minutes and I probably didn't need to use the FastPass. But no big deal, I always like to have one even if I don't use it.

Of course, I got SOAKED. It was my own fault I guess for sitting next to the biggest guy on the raft. I appreciated the cool down though, it was a hot day.

Up next, Things are looking up

Great Pics from AK, I love the gorillas!!!!

Thanks for the heads up on the gross chicken, I'll make sure to get something else.

I was soaked to the bone and thought I'd do something that didn't involve sitting down, the Maharaja Jungle Trek. On my way in I did some more pin trading - I traded Grumpy and Ariel for Pirate Chip and a Baloo.

I guess because it was in the middle of the afternoon, there weren't a whole lot of animals out and about. I did see bats though, which are my favorites in that area anyway.

My next destination was Everest, single rider line - woohoo! I rode twice, both with grandparents who had never ridden before. I screamed my face off and had a great time. I rode toward the front both times, usually I am in the back. I think that is my preferred riding location from now on. It felt like a different ride and I really enjoyed it. Again, it seems I'm the only one with arms up!!

Since I was pretty close to Dinoland, I headed in that direction to see if Dinosaur was a short line. I passed the Nemo queue and thought about going in to watch the show, but I just missed it. And I wasn't waiting until 4:45 to see the next one. Once I got to Dinoland I used the bathroom. Now normally I wouldn't talk about my bathroom visits, but this has a very important PSA attached to it. NEVER use the toilet seat covers when your butt is wet from Kali. That stupid paper nonsense stuck right on my butt and it wouldn't come off!!! I was in there for minutes longer than I should have been picking pieces of paper off my cold, wet butt. Be forewarned!!

After my toilet paper cover tragedy, I needed a snack. I stopped at the cart by Triceratop Spin and got a coke and a Mickey Bar. They hit the spot.

2008_0919Disney09080310.jpg

Dinoland was really the only empty part of the park on this day, probably because Primeval Whirl was closed. It made me sad, but I took pictures anyway.

2008_0919Disney09080312.jpg

Dinosaur was a walk on. Fun ride as always, and I was scared as always!

2008_0919Disney09080315.jpg

I was pretty ready to go at this point. But on my way out of the park I saw Goofy and he had a pretty short line. I got some good pictures and I was proud of myself that I did my first Character meet and greet!

image1391.jpg

The people in front of me in line were HILARIOUS!!! It was an older woman and I think her son. She really wanted a picture of Goofy. Her son stood off to the side taking pictures with the Polaroid Camera. A real life Polaroid, I can't remember the last time I saw one of those!! I saw them later on a bench waiting for their pictures to develop. I wonder where you even buy film for one of those anymore?

As I started to leave the park, I passed the Winnie the Pooh, Tigger and Eeyore greeting spot. It was open until 4:30, so I said, what the hey! I got down to the landing and what do you know, there was only a few other people down there and I was the last one in line. I saw Pooh first. Then Eeyore was next. The Eeyore Photopass guy confused me with being the wife of the guy in front of me. After he realized he was wrong, he was a nice guy. Since I was last, after Eeyore and I took pictures alone, Pooh came over and joined us and I got pictures with both of them. Tigger was the last one and I got pictures with all three of the characters together! The Tigger photopass guy was a little annoying, he totally rolled his eyes at me at one point - whatever!

image1404.jpg

It was time for Pooh, Eeyore and Tigger to leave, and we all walked out the exit together. Tigger held my hand the whole way. I tried to forget that it was probably some weird girl or guy in the costume and they probably thought I had some mental issues and just enjoy the special moment I was having. I didn't get any pictures of it though, boo.

I was beat now and caught the bus back to the resort

Aww I love the group shot! That was pretty awesome! Sounds like you had a good day at animal kingdom minus the bathroom incident. Hehe. Can't wait to hear more. :thumbsup2

I had trouble getting past the fact that it was a person in a costume, but otherwise, not so bad!

Wow, a poloroid? That's a bit of a relic isn't it?

The rest of your day at AK sounds like fun.
It certainly gave me the giggles to see one of those!

I love the photo with all three of the Pooh characters -- that really turned out cute!
Yeah, I got some really great pictures from that time!

Even though my afternoon went better than my morning I was still feeling pretty down when I got back to AKL. I was really thinking it wasn't a good idea to take the trip. I took the long walk back to my room, changed into some dry clothes and opened up the curtains. That is when my outlook on the day changed completely.

There were so many animals out! Giraffe, eland, Ankole Cattle, you name it, it was out there. I even saw the afternoon safari truck go by.

All of these were taken right out on my balcony, how cool is that??

I took some time to explore the other viewing areas around the resort. Got to see some zebra on the Uzima side of the Savannah.

2008_0919Disney09080325.jpg

And a another giraffe

2008_0919Disney09080327.jpg

I heard a lot of squawking from some peacock or pheasant looking birds. They really were squawking their heads off, like they wanted to be let inside!

2008_0919Disney09080331.jpg

I talked to one of the CMs and spent time at another overlook. The CM had a lot of really good information to share on the breeding habits and some good stories. He was telling me about how they keep the males and females separate. And how before an animal is due to give birth, they bring it to the enclosure, so little kids aren't traumatized on their vacations! AKL is different from AK because they don't bring the animals in at night. The animals are on the Savannah 24/7. He was also telling me about the Thompson's Gazelle that jumped the fence and impregnated 9 females in one night! And of course they weren't expecting it.

After talking, I excused myself to go do a little bit more animal viewing. I got to see the baby giraffe out with it's mom and aunts

2008_0919Disney09080330.jpg

And in case you didn't think ordinary animals hang out on the savanna, I saw a rabbit too!

2008_0919Disney09080328.jpg

At this point I decided it was time for a drink. I went down to the bar, Victoria Falls. There were lots of people in the lounge part waiting for their Boma and Jiko reservation times, so I took a seat at the bar. The bartenders were Frank and Tony. I asked Tony what he recommended and he suggested a Sunken Treasure with no Malibu. I took it. It was very good, Tony knows his booze.

2008_0919Disney09080334.jpg

At that point I was getting hungry so I asked Tony if the bar at Jiko served the full menu, he said that yes they did and so I went down the stairs to see if I could get seated.

Up Next...Dinner with Bra Straps Magee and Hat Guy.

So glad your outlook turned around. :goodvibes The view from your balcony is AMAZING!

I had a sunken treasure on my trip as well... no idea if it was w/ or w/o malibu but it was gud! :thumbsup2

Very interested in your experience at the bar in Jiko as I'm looking at that as an option in Dec. And of course bra strap macgee and hat guy sound intriguing!

Loved the update... that sunken treasure looks real good:thumbsup2
May have to add that to my next list

I'm glad your trip is looking up! It took me 2 full days until I really felt comfortable with the solo thing.... sounds like you got in the groove alot quicker than I did:rotfl: I shoulda went to look for some critters.... next time, since i now know the trick!

Paula

Aww I love the animals...there is nothing better than animals right outside your room at AKL. I am really hoping for a savannah view room if we get to go in dec. I don't know if I told you or not, but there is a possibility we might be able to go...it just depends if work gives matt off or not. Dreams unlimited will allow us to cancel up to the day before only losing 200 dollars so unbeknownst to me matt went ahead and got all the adr's and everything in july at the 180 mark. I only found out b/c the update popped up on our imac...but i don't want to know details unless I know we get to go. I assume thats where we are staying though. But yea...love the pics of the baby giraffe! Giraffe's are my fave animal. I love their spots and their long necks...so cute! We had some fighting outside our room this past dec...batting each other with their necks. Apparently it was play time. :thumbsup2 I can't wait to hear more and it sounds like your afternoon was going much better! :goodvibes

Cool facts about the AKL and its animals! I also didn't know that they bring in all the animals from the safari at AK at night -- that must be quite a job!
