A benefit to owning more points than I need

So I have way more points than I really need or can use at this stage in life. But I'm experiencing that overbuying can come in handy sometimes too.

I had to shift an Oct trip forward by a day, which has left me scrambling for a (preferred) room for the first night. Ideally I'd like the same resort/room category as the rest of the trip so we don't have to move (VGF 1BR standard). But as some rooms become available, I've been booking them. I had an AKL Jambo 1BR booked first (since cancelled). I currently have an AKL Jambo savanna studio (good for maybe seeing a few animals before we take off the next morning), a VGF lake view studio (at least same resort as the rest of the trip), and just snagged a BW studio for the first night (we're planning on going to EP the next morning). And I still have plenty of points available to book more.

I'll sort out which room I really want to keep at 30 days out and drop whatever other ones I have reserved.

That is within the rules of the game, but you might be preventing someone else from taking a vacation. Why not decide now and keep only one room? That way you won't risk missing the cutoff date accidentally either. October is a very popular month for DVC members, wouldn't it be nice to make someones day now?

I doubt I'm preventing someone else from taking a vacation. This is one night, and there are still 3 other room options showing available for that night. If I were hoarding multiple night reservations at 11 months out - I would view that differently (though like you said - that would be within my rights).

I am going to cancel 2 of them - I already cancelled the AKL 1BR I had. I just haven't had a chance to discuss with the rest of the family yet. The intention of my post was to celebrate a little that it's nice being able to grab a room on a whim when you're stalking the site - and not having to worry about borrowing points, picking a resort right at that moment without having to talk to the rest of the family before hitting 'Yes'.

Owning a lot of points and using in this and a number of ways can be advantageous but it can be expensive. As long as you're within the rules of DVC usage, I don't think anyone can legitimately complain about it. You could have multiple room types/locations, multiple times, multiple wait lists with different master contracts, Hold one room while piecing together another reservation using the 7 month window or wait list and many other variations.

Isn't the deadline at least 31 days prior to checkin or the points go into holding?

One of the benefits I see of having more points than you need is financial. If you have 200 points and only need 100 each year. You could rent the extra 100 and essentially pay no MF each year.
