For about a year and a half now my back has been hurting me pretty bad at night while I'm asleep. I wake up in the middle of the night and sometimes I can hardly move for a few seconds. The pain has even took my breathe away while trying to move. I always end up going and getting on the couch. At first I thought that maybe it was our mattress but we got a new one back in February along with a new couch and it is still happening. It is only at night that it hurts. It doesn't bother me at all during the day. Now I had a baby back in December and thought that maybe it was from lugging her around all the time but it was hurting me even before I was pregnant with her. I know that I should probably go to the Dr. but I'm a pretty stubborn person when it comes to them. I thought that maybe I could get some feedback from you guys before I call to make an appointment. If I don't find out pretty quick my husband might divorce me due to spending most of my nights on the couch(ha-ha). Any ideas?

Go to the doctor and get some x-rays. I was having the same problem a few years ago, and found that I have degenerative disc disease. I was given some pain killers that helped, and seeing a chiropractor regularly keeps me off of the pain killers.

Hi Sheila and welcome to the DIS!!! I would definetly go to your doctor so he/she can order X-rays or possibly a Catscan. You might end up going to physical therapy which I found very beneficial for the problems I have had with my neck. Good luck.:D

Get it diagnosed so you can have it treated correctly:D

I agree with the others... go see your doctor! They can do x-rays, MRIs and all that to figure out what is wrong. I am currently going to PT for my back and it helps a ton!

I also did PT after my motorcycle accident. My back pain still flares up, but if I excercise (mostly stretching) every day it really helps. PT was great for showing me what exercises to do.

I know this sounds silly, but it might be your mattress, I had pain so bad I couldn't turn over in my sleep, I would have to limp to the bathroom every morning and just felt awful. We had gotten a new mattress several years ago and I still had the pain. When a local furniture store was going out a business, I got a new mattress and it has made a huge difference in our lives. Even my dh said he feels rested and his back pain has left him. I never believed a mattress could make that much of a difference, but it has made a huge one, My back pain was so bad, it had affected my hip and I was walking with a pronouced limp, its just so much better now.
