ARGGGG! :furious:

I am staying at my parent's house, and they refuse to use the AC. I am in NJ, and it is 97 degrees now with heat index of 101!! It's HOT!! But they refused to turn on the central AC in the house. :confused3 They had it on briefly yesterday, and my mom gets "cold" within minutes, so they decided not to turn it on today. So instead they turned on the attic fan, which is bringing the 97 degree heat right into the house. The inside temperature of the house raised from 78 to 83 degrees in the last hour! Great solution!!

I have a good job and I am begging them to use the AC - I will pay for it! But they absolutely refuse.

Now I feel the sweltering hot air starting to make my room unbearable, and I have work to get done. I am seriously looking at going to a hotel for the rest of the weekend! This is nuts! It will cost me about $150 a night for a hotel (very expensive area I live in). I could buy a nice air conditioner for less than 2 nights in a hotel! But nope - dad won't allow me to temporarily put in a window unit, house not wired for it, he says.

I grew up without AC, but I admit today I want it on! I know I will not sleep tonight like this. Anyone else in a situation where they can't have AC? Anyone? Make me feel better by letting me know I am not alone while I wilt away! :teeth:

I feel for you. I live in an apartment in hot, humid texas and my ac is above my hot water heater. Well my a/c went crazy last night and leaked all over the floor and broke something in the hot water heater. I have to wait until Monday for them to fix it. At least I don't actually need hot water since cold water showers will cool me off.

Would your mom be willing to set the thermostat up close to 80? Do you just have one unit or do you have zones in the house? If you have zones, maybe you could turn on just the ones for your area.

I grew up without AC too but don't know what I would do without it now. Sorry I don't have a solution. Maybe your parents would let you turn it on just to sleep tonight. Tell them that people sleep better in cool air than in warm. It's true!

I feel for you, I am in NJ too and have had my AC on since this morning. It is too hot and its not safe to not have it on especially if you have it to put on. They don't even have to make it that cold, heck just put it on 78. The AC will also take the humidity out of the house.

I'd be at the hotel with cool air. I probably run my air 8 months of the year. I don't mind paying the bill to stay comfortable. We went to school without air conditioning until 7th grade, and our house usually only had 1 room with a window unit until I was in the 5th grade. I don't ever want to go back to those days again.

I can't imagine how uncomfortable you feel. If you need to work you might have to go to a hotel. Could you drive a ways and get to a less costly area?

I know I'm in the minority but we don't have AC in my apt and they don't allow window units here. It's 90 here and we have all the windows cracked (for fresh air) with the shades/blinds closed, all the lights off and a ton of fans on everywhere. I could go buy a portable I guess but we're so cramped in here already I don't know where I'd put it. I'll suffer with you. :(

I am checking on-line now! I am getting desperate. I will talk to them again, and see if they intend on ever putting it on today. I can't seem to even bribe them to do it! :confused3

Most people in my town would never EVER would consider going without AC in this kind of weather! Unheard of (except in my house!). :(

I am so mad, since I didn't think I would have to deal with this so soon in the season! I mean, it was like the low 70's for the last week, then straight to 97 degrees. Ughhhhh! :worried:

How old are your folks? My inlaws don't turn on the air until the last minute, everyone is gonna expire if you don't turn it on...
We cannot tolerate that. I have two kids with asthma. That is why we don't spend a lot of time with them, at their house in the summer.

Im with you. I'd be at a hotel with the air down to like 65.... :rotfl2:

Yeaaa! Wow - 90 sounds cool to me! Weather channel had us listed at 97 degrees!! I have 2 fans blowing on me. Nice to know I won't suffer alone - guess there are a few of us out there! This heat is really too much too soon! :faint:

I already checked Hiltons and Best Westerns and nothing available in my price range. Keep looking .....! :surfweb:

Do you have LaQuinta or Holiday Inn close by? I find some good deals there.

Maybe try Expedia too.

PRICELINE - they deal with last minute - check out the website betterbidding.com!! (you go to hotels.com to figure out what hotels are available in the 4* range, and then bid low based on that website - but read their directions, that's the condensed version!)

but somehow I think I would truly be worried if it were my parents, this early in the season sure, they can weather the storm - (ie heat) but, what if.... what if the summer intensifies, and we get those horrid 100+ degrees, and drought conditions - I'll never forget the summer in Chicago when so many elderly people died because they refused to turn the a/c on - (and many many did not have the option...)

I know you've talked to them ( I have very stubborn parents also!) but do they know you are thinking of going to a hotel, just see if they would consider setting the a/c at 80 degrees, as this just eliminates the oppressive humidity!!

Good luck!

We must be related. My parents are about 70 years old and the same way. If they even ever use the AC, they may turn it on for one hour in the evening at most. They grew up without it and don't see it as ever necessary. Also, my mom has been through heck and back with breast cancer a few years ago (but is doing well now :) ), but the whole ordeal left her feeling cold the second the AC is on. Since she gets so uncomfortable so quick, my dad won't turn it on at all. So I am stuck on this issue. And my parents are those kind who believe in "just dealing with it" - they sort of believe I am a wimp for wanting it on in when it's 97 degrees out. Even though I am about to throw cash at their faces to turn it on, I know they just won't do it. :(

I checked the inside hall temperature - now up to 85 degrees. It was 78 around noon. :(

Maybe I will check Marriots next ..... :surfweb:

that's funny - I missed your post!

My dad's parents were this way - they lived in Arkansas!! My dad still feels this way, but mom now puts on a/c - but it is set very high!!

oh and my first thought was you wanted to go to the 97 degrees concert :rotfl2: and the venue had no a/c!! :rotfl2:

It sure is HOT out!!

I guess I am showing my age - I don't know who 97 degrees even is!! :teeth: But a concert with no AC doesn't sound like much fun in this heat either way! I can't even imagine how people do Disney in this kind of heat. I could never function.

There's hope - the temperature outside dropped to only 95 degrees!! Maybe this is progress! But tomorrow is suppose to be the more of the same. :(

Mom said they would be turning in the AC "later". So I know what that means - they may run it from around 8:00 pm until they go to bed at 10:00, then turn it off overnight. Yeaaaa. Guess I should be happy for that much.

Maybe I will go for a long car ride - even with gas prices, I can be in AC for a little while. :drive:

lol Its actually "98 degrees" and they were a boy band!! and I'm old !! ( I have a 22 yr old son.... easier to tell his age than mine!! I had him after I graduated college and was married 5yrs...)

I hope you have a fan in the room you are sleeping in - I would buy a lot of those freezer pacs and then put one in front of the fan, and one on my feet, one behind my neck, etc etc...

and then have some in the freezer so when they warm up, you can switch them!!

good luck!!

Dude!! I got two words for ya: Holiday Inn. :) I am sure you love your parents, but they need to understand that they are use to it, you are not. Comfort first I say. :)

My parents were like that - but I need the air because of my asthma. So Mom used to throw on a blanket when she got cold......

I doubt she'd be cold today though. It is a SCORCHER out there.......

:faint: I can't imagine living with the heat like that. If you're sweating in the house, it's too darn hot!

Here in North Texas, I run the central air pretty much year round. It doesn't have to crank very hard in the winter, but there are a number of days when the A/C runs in the daytime and the central heat kicks in at night.

The bill can be pretty high in the summer months, but that's just the way it is. We'll plan for those electric bills in return for being comfortable. It's worth every penny!

I'd be at a hotel. Or at a friend's house.
