97 degrees here and no AC!! Ackkkk!

I guess I am showing my age - I don't know who 97 degrees even is!! :teeth: But a concert with no AC doesn't sound like much fun in this heat either way! I can't even imagine how people do Disney in this kind of heat. I could never function.

There's hope - the temperature outside dropped to only 95 degrees!! Maybe this is progress! But tomorrow is suppose to be the more of the same. :(

Mom said they would be turning in the AC "later". So I know what that means - they may run it from around 8:00 pm until they go to bed at 10:00, then turn it off overnight. Yeaaaa. Guess I should be happy for that much.

Maybe I will go for a long car ride - even with gas prices, I can be in AC for a little while. :drive:

AC sounds AWESOME!!! They said today on the radio that it was cooler down the shore than up here (I'm in Essex).

Yeaaa! Dad finally had enough!! He's been walking around the house sweating, holding a towel to dry his forehead. Finally got to him too. He told mom to get a sweater, and the AC is now on! :cloud9:

The inside hallway read 86 degrees right before we turned on the AC. Our wooden floors were sweating and feeling slimy at that point! So were the wooden handrails on the stairs. Next to go would be the wooden doors would stop closing on the frames (this has happened many times in previous summers). Not good!

But sad thing, I know the AC will be only be on for a handful of hours, and then turned off in the evening. And the house will heat up again as I fall to sleep (if I can sleep), then cool off a tad by the dead of night (like 3:00 am). And then tomorrow it's the same thing all over again. Sigh. :(

JARNJ3 - Maybe heading to the shore isn't such a bad idea for Jerseyans suffering inland. I doubt I would even care if the ocean water temp is cool - I don't think that would stop me today!! :teeth:

Well, at least right now I am not falling to pieces in the heat. :)

I am going to keep the Holiday Inn's number on speed dial, just in case .... :surfweb:

Im with you. I'd be at a hotel with the air down to like 65.... :rotfl2:

Agree. Our A/C is set to "IGLOO" temperature. I could care less about the expense. It is interesting that the same folks who refuse to turn on the A/C in the summer have NO problem turning up the heat in the winter to "Sahara Desert" conditions.

I am in New Orleans where 95/95 (heat/humidity) is the norm. Sort of like Orlando.

My dad and I keep changing the thermostat. He can't really see the numbers without putting on his glasses so he just pushes the lever all the way over to the right - that is like ninety degrees plus!!

I try to compromise and put it on 80. He had a stroke 2 weeks ago and just got home from the hospital so of couse I have to try to accomodate him - but I am dying here.

ICE PACKS!! and a fan -

seriously, putting an Ice pak behind your neck, or on your feet while you try to sleep will help... just have plenty in the freezer!!

A month or so ago it got up to 100 here, we don't have a/c, I don't know anyone around here that has a/c. It was 92 in the house before the day was through, it was painful, very very painful. We all hid in front of fans - summers are like that around here. But it doesn't get humid at least. :faint:

OP...I don't know your personal situation (not asking) and can't help but wonder...if you're an adult, can't you MOVE, even if it's rooming with another female your age? :confused3

We broke down and turned on our A/C last night. The thought of 97 degree temps were enough. Now our A/C is only sitting on 80 degrees, but with no humidity, it's more than tolerable.

Do you have any "cooling stations" near your house. The fire station up the street from us is open if anybody needs to get out of the heat for a while.

LOL - I'm switching jobs, so I am staying for now at my parents until it all comes through and official (complicated story there!) and I can move closer to work. Even worse, most of my stuff is in a storage unit! So I am stuck for now. I have the $$$$ to pay them to use the AC, but they aren't hurting for cash themselves either so my bribes aren't working - it's a principal thing with them, I guess! :confused3 So frustrating.

Now the inside temp is 85 degrees, even with the AC on. Guess we let the house heat up too much before Dad finally gave in and turned it on. But it's slightly more tolerable. Mom hasn't tried to turn it off yet.

Sandy - I like the ice pack idea!! I may try that! :teeth:

To those of you who don't have to fight the AC battle - enjoy it!!!

You poor thing! :( I empathize. Growing up, my parents were always shaking and complaining about being chilly during the summer, especially after the sun went down. There were many nights I went to bed and tossed and turned, constantly searching for a cool spot on my pillow and not finding one. Mom and dad would always have a light weight blanket pulled over them. :sad2: I know, I know. ::yes::

OP i hope you have the AC on today, its brutal out there. As I was reading the responses it made me remember my grandparents before the died and the heat. They had a window unit in their kitchen because that was where they spent most of their days and it was hardly ever on. I remember my grandpa wearing sweaters in the summer. I can't even imagine anything like that. It was so hot today the kids had early dismissal.

I totally understand! We just got air back on after 5 days without after a powerful storm came through last Wednesday knocking out much of the power in the Washington DC metro area and destroying several homes in the process.

Temps were okay the first night but it got up to the mid 90s by Saturday and it must be 99 and 99% humidity by now! The heat index is easily 110 and those tree cutters and power workers have been out there every day since the storm trying to clear up the damage.

I remember my relatives living without AC back in the 60s and 70s but they were in rural PA and NY and had many windows with breezes. Everybody drank tea and lemonade and there were fans going day and night. Even my parents house was built to take advantage of the shade of old trees and didn't have AC. It never seemed hot no matter what the temps and it is in the same region I live in today.

I know my tolerance is so low for heat compared to my relatives of years gone by!

I left my apartment for just that reason! I have been staying at my parents with central air and a pool!! My new apartment has air but that's not for 2 weeks.

Heat is miserable.. Throw in humidity though and you have very, very dangerous health issues just waiting to happen - especially with older people, infants, and those who are suffering from various medical conditions..

Years ago the air quality wasn't as horrible as it is now.. People need to take these hot, humid weather conditions seriously..

As for the OP - I would find someplace else to go - even if it were 50 miles away..

OP can you go down the basement? I remember growing up our A/C was broke for a few years. My sister and I took our mattresses off our beds and threw them down the basement and slept..aaahhhh so cool.

OP here - happy to report that me and dad have sucessfully overuled mom, and the AC has been on most of the day! :) They did turn it off last night and the house got pretty warm by morning, but fortunately it wasn't unbearable. The schools are all closing early here tomorrow because of the forcast 97 degree heat. Even worse, many towns nearby (Maplewood, West Orange area) lost power for hours, but fortunately our power wasn't affected, whew!

Well, this would be a whole 'nother thread, but we can't do that because the bottom floor of our house is infested with cave crickets!! Those things can HOP! We had them here for 20 years now and can't get rid of them. We never venture downstairs at night unless mentally prepared to look for and step around those things!

I just don't know how I survived as a kid growing up in this same house with no AC (and cave crickets). We had nothing but an attic fan. I don't remember being so hot that I couldn't sleep for days on end back then. How did we ever do it?

I still wish I could install my own window unit in my room while I am at my folk's house. I hope this heat wave isn't a sign of what the whole summer may be like! :faint:
