9 days of Gluten & Dairy free dining -updated-Biergarten

Thanks for the list. I hope they keep the allergy menu and maybe even add a few more places to make life easier for those that need it. Just about getting my head around it all for dining at home but I'm sure with time it will become second nature :goodvibes

Biergarten is hands-down on my family's list of the top 3 places to eat at WDW! We eat there once every trip. Since we alerted the restaurant to our allergies on the MDE app the hostess was aware of them and let us know the chef would speak with us after we were seated.

Normally, we travel with a huge party that takes up an entire table, but on this trip it was just the 5 of us and we wound up sharing a table with another family. They also had an infant with them (DS was 3 months at the time) so we commiserated over that.

The chef arrived shortly after we were seated and let us know that he had a child with food allergies (gluten and perhaps something else, I can't remember exactly). On our past 2 visits the chef would walk around the buffet and let me know what DD could have and they would safely get items from the kitchen so we would not have to deal with cross-contamination. This time, the chef just asked what DD likes. I told him she is a meat and potatoes girl but does not have a huge appetite. He said she could have the roast pork and chicken as well as roasted potatoes and green beans. This was the plate he brought DD with all of the items he mentioned she could have. (DD started eating potatoes and green beans off the plate before I could take the picture!)

I asked about the sausages they had since last time DD was able to have a sausage, something similar to a weisswurst with veal but I couldn't remember the exact name. He said he would check in the back and look at the ingredients. He returned later and said he did not feel confident giving her the sausage due to the yeast allergy. I think he did not understand the yeast allergy and chose to play it safe.

I also asked about the applesauce since I know they make that in house. DD is a huge fan of applesauce but she can't eat any fruits or veggies that are canned or bottled, she immediately gets sick. I usually make a huge batch of applesauce every few months and can or freeze it but it isn't something she gets to have all the time and I hadn't made any since DD was born. He said that was fine for her to have and DD was in hog heaven! She had 3 servings and somehow I did not take a picture of any of the huge bowls she had

The chef came out later while I was at the buffet with our oldest daughter and dumped handfuls of Enjoy Life products including cookies and chocolate bars at our table. Unfortunately, DD could not have any of it due to the buckwheat and chocolate liquor (which is in most solidified chocolates). When I got to the table, I quickly placed a napkin over them so DD wouldn't see them and when our server arrived I asked her to take them off the table. The chef did come back later to apologize. Other than the applesauce there wasn't anything they could give DD for dessert. She had filled up on the holy grail of applesauce anyway so she didn't even know she was missing out on anything.

I contacted the EPCOT cake line a few weeks before our trip to see if we could order the same type of gluten & dairy free cake we were ordering from the Grand Floridian but they said they do not make any special allergy accommodations and that all allergy cakes at EPCOT have to come from Babycakes which DD is allergic to.

We had high hopes of visiting several booths at the F&W festival during this trip but the rain was endless. It poured off and on the 2 days we visited EPCOT. (DH and I both had to buy new pairs of shoes at MouseGears) We were already so wet and soggy from walking over to Biergarten for lunch that I couldn't fathom dragging 3 kids around to the booths that I had so carefully researched so that DD could eat something safe for dinner. Even though the rain had stopped briefly we were done with EPCOT. DD loves juice and it is such a rare treat for her (much like the fresh applesauce from the Biergarten) so we decided to at least stop at the Terra booth on our way out of the World Showcase since they had fresh watermelon juice.

mmmm... watermelon-y

I also want to thank you for keeping the information flowing for those of us navigating allergies in WDW.
