Should we go for the worst pirate: joke while esteri isn't around? Here's one my kids would love....

Why was the pirate's butt so big?

Because he kept stealing everyone's booty!

Worst = Cheesy?

I am looking for a new digital camera. Mine was good in its day -- Nikon Coolpix 3 megapixel -- but I want something that is going to give me better definition, more stabilization (especially with close ups) and lots of other neat stuff.

Can any of you give me an idea of what your favorite camera is? Why do you like it so much? Would you post a sample picture so that I can see what kind of picture it takes?

I would really appreciate it. I'd like to get the new camera for the EB cruise and want to have some time to practice with it beforehand.

Many thanks!

A couple of things Mike,

Now there are other dedicated sites that steer folks into "popular" and "good performers"..... such as right here on the DIS there is a photography forum, and off the DIS a favorie of mine populated by semi-serious enthusiasts and semi-pros is DP Review... as there are also serious enthusiast sites like Fred Miranda http://www.fredmiranda.com/ and Rob Galbraith http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/index.asp who (arguably) cater to the technical purists.

These sites can soak up tons of your time - but they can also satisfy and nurture those with a real passion for the pursuit.

On the other hand, if ya want a quick and simple suggestion - I would simply buy something from COSTCO because of their "no questions asked" easy return policy good for 90 days. Provided you keep the receipt and not damage the digicam - you can buy in confidence - try and see it in your own hands for a while to deermine if you like it. AND if your local store does not quite have what ya like - then maybe it can be had throught the on-line Costco store. AND if you're ultimately unhappy then you can still return it to your local store.

Aside from that - if you want specific recommendations - then I'll offer a short list with the following conditon(s) ... a) Technology and power even among the intermediate pocket digicams has advanced tremendously so that todays cameras sweep away the performance standards of digicams only 2-3 years older! b) I feel only a FEW pocket digicams truly UNDERPERFORM in general... so you should select a nice feeling/handling model and double check the reviews (if any) then just buy and try. c) the final precondition... the only major step up is to a bulky/heavy/costly DSLR. Aside from that your BEST INVESTMENT into your digial photo taking is to take a basic or intermediary photography class ... as I feel it has always been the PHOTOGRAPHER who makes the most difference in the final images.

Now as for my general suggestions: I am biased towards Canon due to their general dominance with several key areas - especially among the professionals. Hence, Canons generally cost more for what you get - but only by a modest degree in some cases.

Next consider what physical configuration you want - slim and tiny to slip into a pocket - small and mildly bulky with NO in the pocket carry ability? Or big and heavy however with maximum performance and handling versetility?

These would steer you towards something like an SD series for the slim one, or small but bulky with steer you towards the "S" or "G" series... while the big and heavy would steer you into a DSLR like the XTi (about to be replaced) or the 40D... + several seperate lenses or zooms, flashes, plus an endless list of alternative accessories.

An SD series can come with or without optical strabilisation - a nice feature or not. That will be the likely "big" difference. The "S" series is simply an "all in one" with big zoom - while the "G" is a bit of a variation in a full sized hand sized digicam. I initially choose to go with a "G" series digicam... and now shoot with a combination of DLSR and a Fuji digicam which I bought ONLY because there was a rebate + Amazon credit balance on hand - which brought my purchase on the Fuji f40 down to $29 net. I am a cheap skate because I feel I've spent over $6000 on equipment and thus I feel I should try to economize a little... until I encounter a piece of equipment whcih I cannot endure living without.

If you want to reply with a form factor - or ask a specific question on another digicam maker I would be hapy to search for background info on it. However, they are all decent performers... with some a little better then others. Also, if you have a preferred budget - then this would help as well.

Aside from all that... a final thoughts are HOW will you use the digital files? Are you just using them online - are you printing any and if so what are the usual and maximum sizes? Will you be shoting a lot and spending tons of time (more time likely) post processing / tweeeking your images? AND... will you in fact enroll into a photography class? Because - if the answer is YES then you'll need a pocket digicam with a full set of "manual controls".. probably. These considerations may sway your decision somewhat - and you may want to budget for postprocessing software if you're gonna get much into the fine aspects of that. IE, DxO with some DSLR/lens combinations or something like Aperature (Apple Macs only) or Lightroom/full power Photoshop???

Here is something very similar to my DSLR (the flash gun appears to differ from mine).

udstyr.jpg

Also, out of consideration to all... I will have NO negative criticisms of any model or maker of dgicams. Although there are a few models out there with rotten reviews... I'll not be spreading questionable opinions. Strictly favorable encouragement is to be had from me.

And now - I must go. We had our 1st Jazz/Ballet/Tap class earlier - and next comes gymnastics classes for both girls. SO I gotta run and play "Daddy Taxi service" for the kids now. TOmorrow we have a wedding then a visit to Disneyland after on account of there being no evening reception and because we're not too far from the parks. I think after all that we'll not do a hotel and just come home saturday nite. It
s been so busy these past 2 months we have hardly been at home at all! AND ,.... good news... I just found out my $31 ticket may only be $140 after all... as the $371 was maybe fixable with proof of insurance. So I gotta go verify it - and then its' only $25 to process for traffic school! Yippiees may be in order as I thought it might have been $371 and NO option for traffic school. I'll confirm it maybe within the next 2 hours when I swing by a police station to get the fix it insurance portion handled. My expectations result from what I've seen online - and now I just need to dot ly "I"s and cross the "t"s.

Adios - maybe I'll swing by chat if I get back in time.

The humidtly in the Panama crossing is very high, and yes against air con instide camaers and video do stop.

Yup, that happened on one of our cruises. I stuck a washcloth in the camera bag around the front of the camera and it seemed to be a temp fix. It was sooo humid out and soooo cold in the A/C that if we opened the verandah door and didn't close it fast enough, the mirrors fogged up as well.

I'm looking at this too, but can't decide between the 8 & 10 hour trips. Me & eldest DD are definirtely doing one of these on the Saturday, I just don't know which! Maybe we can start another Pre DCL Dis trip!

We're looking into something like this too. There is a hummer limo that does a hollywood/LA tour for 4 hours for 24 people at appx. $750 including gratuity so that comes out to $31.25 per person. Any takers? I would gladly be in charge of planning this if anybody is interested?

I may be interested. 7 hours seemed way too long. Didn't think either of us would like to be sitting that long after flying in the day before. See if you can get details.

YAY! Enna's back!
:wave::wave::wave::wave::wave::wave::wave::wave:

Which Poison Control did you call - people or animal?
I called the animal number I got from my vet & they were going to charge $30-$40 bucks (ASPCA runs it). I love my dog, I was going to pay it, but I was on hold for about 5 minutes waiting to talk to a person. So I hung up and called the people poison control line & they helped me for free. Even called back 2x over the next few days to make sure she was OK.

FYI - 20 or so Flintstone vitamins will not kill a 45 lb. dog. I know this now.

My DS got into the chewables once and we had to make him give it back Try forcing syrup of ipecac down and then making him drink water.:confused3 We were told they could cause some damage but since the vitamins also contained flouride, that was the main concern.

This weekend, we were invited to attend my Cousins sons wedding in Chicago. We declined due to I was worried the weather would be too harsh for my 90 yr old Mom.(actually I wouldn't have done much better either) I'm finding out how bitter it is now. My cousin is from London. I just hope she is prepared for the bitter weather. She tried to convince them to have a spring wedding but the bride always fantansized on being a winter bride. Well I hope she is happy with the decision. I can't imagine how painful it is to take in a deep breath. Those were the kind of days, our schools would close down as it was too cold to wait for the buses.I hope all of you stay warm and safe.

Are we doing chat on the website?

1 "concerta" pill that my son used to take for ADD did not kill my dog (40lbs) AND I also had to call because when we were moving into this house, we had a long car trip before hand, my dog wanted water. We had just gotten here and boxes were everywhere. I was looking for a dish but she found the BIG DISH (Toilet). She drank a ton of it and then we realized it had one of those hang in the bowl toilet cleaners on it that turned the water blue. We were scared, we called and were told to watch her. She had some stomach issues but she was fine. She has also chewed & swallowed a small tube of toothpaste - YIKES!

I First Introduced myself on this thread after being one of the lucky ones to snag a room for this sailing. The thread quickly became overwhelming and I didn't have time to keep up with the postings. Life became hectic with a sick Baby and the last time I checked postings there was a information thread at the beginning that gave summaries of the postings and information on the ports, excursions etc......I see that is gone now. Is it hidden away somewhere that I am not seeing? Well life is getting back to normal now. My baby is now 2 and doing GREAT after her open heart surgery in July. What a difference in her!! Our family is now getting excited again for this trip!! We are looking at it being a special celebration because it will be one year since her surgery and she will turn 3 on the cruise!!! We have 4 Children. The youngest will turn 3 on the sailing. We have a son who is 5. A Daughter who is turning 8, and a son who will be 10 this Spring. All of a sudden it feels like this cruise is Right Around the corner !!!! We have done nothing to plan and now I feel like there isn't enough time, although of course their is!!! We have done the 4 Day cruise and Last winter we did the Western . Our family can't wait to spend 15 days on our favorite place to be in the world !! WE hope this time we have enough time to do everything we want to do!! Well if anyone knows of a summary page or cruise information page to help me that would be great!! Thank You!!

Welcome back. Great news on your DD.

;) Hello fellow Pirates :wave2: When last I had some time to post, I think I was ear-deep in soccer season with my boys, looking for a new job and thinking about selling our house. WELL ... I'm happy to report that soccer season has ended ... and nothing else has much changed in my world :rotfl2: I'm still looking for that "perfect" job, and we're still probably, more-likely-than-not going to sell our house and move into something different in the near future.

I've been following along with the thread as much as possible, and reading my newsletters faithfully ... THANK YOU!! My thoughts are with everyone that needs them for any of those good or bad reasons that pop up in all of our lives

I think I recently read that M was looking for help with a task force Happy Hour, and I think I can help out w/that one. Anyone else need help with task force Happy Hours, I'm your girl! ;)

We attended a family wedding earlier this month, and got some great shots that I'll be sending along with our family bio for inclusion on the website ... that is as soon as DH remembers which "safe place" he put the XDCard in, since he was fearful of the camera getting lost or stolen from the bag that HE was responsible for

I've been asked by aforementioned DH, if there might be any pirates amongst the group that would be interested in an excursion to Sammy Hagar's bar in Cabo for some tequilla tasting :confused3

Take care all!
Kandi

My brother & I are interested in this. Is it called cabo wabo? Anyway, I'm not real comfortable leaving my kids on the ship, so, my brother will probably go without me.

Well let's put it this way....Mike doesn't owe me a drink on the cruise! I am such a loser! :sad2:

I know I am the queen of excuses, but I really did do some work on it the other day, but that was the day my computer broke & my thesis is stuck in that hard drive. We now have a new one (which is why I'm posting away today & boy is this thing fast) but I have to figure out how to get my thesis out of my old hard drive. I do have a copy so I can retype it if I have to but I'll lose the little work I did do. Even my DH said it must be a conspiracy!

Anyway, that's my story...thanks for asking! :goodvibes

No conspiracy here! I am completely innocent, and if you don't believe me, I'm sure I can get Crash to back me up on that!

If you are very concerned, some people suggest that you put your camera into zip-lock or resealable freezer bags while you are in the low humidity, cool area - try to have as little air as possible in with the camera and/or lenses - then you still need to wait for the camera to warm up to the outside temperature before you open the zip-lock and use your camera. This method should keep the condensation/moisture out of your camera. You can include sillica gel packets in the baggies also to be doubly sure.

After killing a $500.00 4 month old camera, I will use the doubly sure method.
I was going to buy one of the underwater camera bags Tom mentioned earlier. I have been reading a lot about them and they have to be airtight to be waterproof so some silica bags in there and I should be good to go. I probably have at least 20 I have saved and they can also be purchased at camera supply places.

I can just see the look on my pharmacy manager's face when I ask to take home all of the "Do Not Eats" from the empty bottles!:lmao:

ITA! I don't think my kids would be up for a tour that long either, I think 4 hours is about all I want to do, but the problem is this company apparently doesn't have Sat. bookings, but there are other limo companies I can get a quote from if people are interested.

Anyway here is some info:

.

They probably don't do Saturdays because of weddings. At least that would be the reason up here. Personally, my kids would be bored stiff on one of those tours - especially when DL is right across the street. One option is rent a mini-van for the day and drive to Hollywood - shouldn't be too hard - if you have someone who doesn't mind driving and a good navigator. Go to Graumann's, El Captian and I think -- Universal Walk.

Um I don't think that's who you want backing you! ;)

Here's a party van that looks great but you have to request a quote:

I kinda like that there's a turlet on board!

Neither DH nor I will drive so we'd much rather do a tour. My kids would have a blast if it was a limo, but not sure how much fun they'd have on a bus tour, especially one that is 8 to 10 hours long...yikes! :scared:

Please forgive my ignorance if I am not understanding this correctly. You can take a high speed train from London to Paris and at the train station in Paris they will take your bags directly to your Disney hotel? How far is the train station from the DLP?
If so WOW! I want to do that. Does it go through the Chunnel? What is an example of cost?
Our 2009 trip is also London/Paris. Definitely NOT on ABD. I priced it for this year and it would have been almost $25,000 just for airfare and the ABD price- nothing else. :scared1: I feel quite sure a week vacation should not cost the same as a year in college.:rotfl:

Just so you know. I think our ABD was FANTASTIC!!! Well worth the price! We are really hoping to do one of the Italy ones in 2009 -- we are hoping to do it with people that we met on the one we did this past August. they are doing the China ABD this year!

I just got my Canon XTi on my birthday (January 2nd) and in January in Chicago "Heat and humidity" are pretty much foreign words! :rotfl2:

From what I have read on the subject - any camera is subject to fogging when going from one extreme to another (frigid air conditioning to hot, humid weather or the reverse. As far as I know, about all you can do is wait for the condensation to evaporate.
Pamela (pdarrah)

That is all I have to do -- I had fog when I went out onto our balconey on the Wonder. I then started trying to remember to *warm up* my camera before I stepped outside! LOL!

I've had my Canon Rebel since June '06 --- I got it for the 10nt Wonder trip. :goodvibes

We're planning on selling our house hopefully before the TOAL!

I'll join in any happy hour task forces too! :goodvibes

I'd love to join the tequila tasting, but since we'll have the kids we'll most likely just find a beach with a nice tiki bar. ;)

I would be THRILLED if at least one of our houses sold before the TOAL!!!! :rotfl: :rotfl: We will have 2 that are for sale soon.........

Hi

Diane I will keep you invite in mind as well as all the others I have recieved! This has got to be the friendliest bunch of pirates! Now I can tell Brendan he can go diving and I will be occupied! LOL

I am totally up for a Cabo Wabo trip! I love Sammy Hagar (music not him personally..lol)...plus if Margeritas are there..so am I!
