Two days in the hospital, pins and wires thru 3 separate bones, and one huge cast. Surgery went very well. All bones are now properly aligned. Next evaluation on Monday. Thanks for asking. Jack

Hope everything goes well at the doctor's next week. Tell Justine we said hello.

Stace- Thinking of you yesterday and today. Hope all went well and you're recovering nicely.

Monica, We'll say an extra prayer for your Mom for a speedy recovery. I had pneumonia last year, right at the same time as my FIL passed away. I didn't go to the doctor because there was just so much going on. I just about collapsed the day after the funeral and could barely get out of bed. As sick as I was, once they started the meds, I felt much better. It took a while to get to 100%, but the meds worked wonders. It sounds like your Mom is being treated well, and we hope to hear some good news from you soon.

Actually it does help in some ways, it reduced our Shutters bill, as all our snaps were ruined.

I can't win with our pictures. On our trip last year, DD didn't smile for any of the Photopass pictures. This year she smiled great...and her twin brother had the worst forced-looking smile I've ever seen. Saved us some money too.

All the talk about parents who don't volunteer caused me to start thinking about how HARD it is to get involved in our school. I think that maybe all the PTO, room moms, etc are a single clique or something. Since DS started 1st grade (he is starting 3rd now) I have been offering to help. I have verbally told people who I know are involved that I "would be happy to help - just let me know what you need." I have also signed up on lists to volunteer for stuff. The 1st year, it did no good at all - it seemed like no one even wanted to acknowledge my interest! Last year, I managed to help with a couple classroom parties and a tiny bit with the big annual fundraiser. I really think it has to do with my being a working mom - I do work full time, but since I work for my father in the family business I can be pretty flexible! I think the non-working moms all go out for coffee in the morning after dropping the kids off and know each other and just organize it all among themselves. It's just weird because I know for the other organizations I am involved with that we ALWAYS need volunteers and would jump at any offers of help!

Pamela (pdarrah)

Our school has Home & School, which is like PTO, and yes, you need to be in the clique to be accepted into volunteering positions. And as a Dad, I'm just not that into Mom-cliques, so you know how much of the fun things I got to do.

:cloud9: :thanks: :disrocks: :teeth:

I couldn't find a tooting my own horn smilie, but I wanted you all to know that I got a semi-firm offer from the firm I've been interviewing with. I have to pass one last interview, but we're already talking terms and how to handle the transitions to make it all work

THANK YOU all for the good thoughts & positive energy you sent my way - I'm sure it helped.

Sounds positive! Continued good wishes being sent your way.

Maybe I'll try to get y'all to come out to the Dicken's Christmas Fair - DH, DD & I all perform there.

That's awesome. We have a big Renaissance Faire not too far from here, and they also do Edgar Allan Poe weekends near Halloween and Dicken's near Christmas. We haven't been there in a few years, but we always had a blast. I think we'll need to make it a priority to get there this year.

Way to go. I don't even think about volunteering at school or PTA -- they are not at all welcoming to Dads trying to help out.

I tried too...it went over like a fart in church.

(Can you find a graphic for that, Crash?)

Six years ago today I was at work listening to the radio when I noticed the banter between the DJ's had stopped and one of them said that was going to be broadcast next was no joke. I remember sitting in stunned silence for a few seconds before jumping from my chair and running out into the main office and telling everyone that a plane had just flown into the WTC. We tried to get onto the internet - MSNBC, CNN, ABC, anything - and couldn't get much because of all the internet traffic - after the towers fell we had nothing. My DH called and while we were on the phone he watched the second plane hit.

I spent the next 7 hours in shock, crying at my desk, getting updates from my DH throughout, and getting absolutely nothing else done. I had memories of going there as a child and seeing some of the filming of "King Kong", going with my father to office parties at the telephone company building a short distance away, that flooded my mind. I wondered who I knew that was there either in the towers working or a first responder. When I got home all I could do was watch everything that had already happened, which was so much worse than what I had imagined. When they showed the flight path of the plane that originated from Boston, we discovered that it flew right over us.

Thanks to everyone for the well wishes for my mom. She is doing better. The wheezing is almost gone, although she is still having some difficulty breathing. She's not as pale anymore and she's got her appetite back. But she's still in the hospital and they haven't even discussed her going home. That's fine though, she's still really exhausted and just needs her rest.

9/11/01

Several of my co-workers liked to listen to Howard Stern on their head phones and that was how I heard about the planes hitting. I was in and out of the room busy working and every time I came in they gave me an update. When the plane hit the Pentagon I panicked. My DH worked in Crystal City at the time and I called to check on him. He said he could smell the smoke from the Pentagon and that he was leaving soon. It took him hours to make it home.

I called my parents in Long Island to make sure my cousins that worked in NYC were ok. One of my cousins worked in a building right next door to the WTC and somehow he managed to find a taxi and get to his sister's apartment before the towers fell. My Dad asked me later if I knew anybody that died at the Pentagon and I told him No. He just shook his head and said that you would be hard-pressed to find someone in LI that didn't know somebody who died or lost someone.

My Mom was at work when a co-worker got the news about the towers. It was really bad... her son worked for Cantor Fizgerald :sad2: :sad2:

Prayers for all who are remembering loved ones lost tonight.

Hi Everyone,

I just got back from the PTO meeting. It is possible that I have gone insane. :crazy2:  Maybe I was just feeling encouraged by the folks who have posted here about dealing with PTO cliques.

I, along with another totally new mom, (her DD is in Kindergarden) have volunteered to be co-presidents :scared1: :scared: The two women who have been co-presidents started the meeting by announcing that they were stepping down (they have done it for 3 years). They were really trying to get someone to volunteer (or a pair for co-presidents again) and were getting nowhere. The new lady had asked a lot of questions about what the job entailed and seemed interested. She also seemed very organized taking notes during the meeting and even volunteered to handle a couple of things. I had a quick conference with DH (who attended with me - there were actually a couple other dads also!) then a quick talk with the other lady and suddenly we were volunteering. Maybe part of my brain was saying "hey, you want to be involved - here's your chance!"

DH will certainly help with this, but right now my stomach keeps flipping over and part of my brain keeps saying "what are you doing? You're crazy!"

Before I play ketchup(about a thousand posts)I wanted to state the people I met at the mini meet were great!!!!!!:woohoo: I think we are all going to enhance the cruise by getting to know as many people before the cruise. :goodvibes We all talked as if we knew each other for years.:rotfl2:

I wished it would not rain on me while I was at the parks. I got my wish!!!! The first day I was at Epcot from 8:00 am til 8:00 pm. and covered the entire park.:yay: I had a pedometer and I logged in a little over 13 Miles. When we went to our car, the car was wet so it just rained in the parking lot. The park was so empty that people were not within 200 feet of me. It was like another dream.

The second day we were at Animal Kingdom and made a fast pace to Expedition Everest. We actually made the second ride of the morning. My practice at speed walking paid off!!:rolleyes1 I had to try the ride at least once before getting really old. :rotfl: It was a hair raising experience.:scared1: I will have to post the picture of sheer terror on my face. We then continued to Disney Studios for the rest of the day. We logged on another 9 miles for the two parks. We were gone from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm.

The third day we arrived at the Magic Kingdom for early morning hours again. We speed walked to Fantasy Land first. We were finished with the entire area by 9:00 am. We stayed in the park from 8:00 am to 11:00 pm. to watch the fire works and shop. This day was only 9 miles as I did no back tracking and just went on everything. We did not use one fast pass the entire trip. I was given one from a CM to go on Big Thunder Mountain to go again but once was enough.

Dear John surprised me and took me into the jewelry store on Main Street. :cloud9: He bought me a beautiful 14 kt gold mickey ring to add to my collection. :dance3: This makes number 4 now!!!:cheer2:

Pamela, that is great. It will be nice for the both of you to share the responsibilities. Isn't it funny how life works out.:goodvibes

Welcome home Cheryl!
Sounds like you were blessed with pixiedust: while you were in the parks. Sounds like you did a ton of walking! I agree the mini meets are great
I'll be looking forward to seeing your EE photo--I really want to ride that one day.:goodvibes

Back before efiling (meaning before 2005) it was normal to file my corporate tax return right on the Sept 15 deadline. 2001 was no different.

At that time I was working at 60 Wall St on the 41st floor. 60 Wall is a few blocks from Ground Zero.

I Worked until midnight on Sept 10, 2001. I remember that the Giants played the Broncos on Monday Nite Football and left for home shortly after the gamed ended.

The next morning I commuted into work and got out of the 4/5 train at the Wall St station at around 9AM. I was blearey eyed. When I got out of the subway there was a lot of people looking skyward and alot of pieces of paper flying around (much like it would be during a ticker tape parade). The only difference was that the papers were burning or charred. That is when I realized that the WTC was on fire! Folks on the street saying a commuter plane hit the building! With all the burning debris flying around, I decided to hurry to the office.

Just as I got to the revolving door at 60 Wall I heard a huge explosion - it was the 2nd plane hitting the building. Due to all the high buildings in the area I did not know that is what it was. I just assumed it was a secondary explosion. But in retrospect there was the sound of a jet engine before the explosion.

I took the elevator to the 41st floor. As the elevator door opened all my collegues (who saw the second plane hit the building) were leaving the building (and urging me to leave). I resisted as I thought being downstairs (with burning papers flying around) would be more dangerous than being in the building. Plus I was responsible for the final part of the tax return and I had many many hours of work before I would be completed (how dumb).

My desk faced the WTC and I was not able to even turn the PC on. I had the radio on... there was only 3 or 4 of us on the floor (normally over 100 people work on those floors).

Phones on our floor were ringing off the hook with folks wanting to know if their loved ones were ok. I answered several of them, but when I realized I had barely seen anyone that AM, I stopped answering and reassuring folks.

We were in one of the offices facing the WTC contemplating the number of folks in the buildings and folks we knew that worked in the building. When all of the sudden the first building fell.

I can remember how the building fell like it happened yesterday. I was like slow motion.

You could see the smoke enveloping all of the streets below... block by block.. and see folks trying to out run it. Within a few minutes it was pitch black (like it was midnight) 41 flights up and several blocks away.

Shortly there after smoke smell entered our building. I has seen enough and it was time to leave. I knew right then that I would use walking as my transportation mode. I called my friend who owned a Car Wash in the South Bronx. I asked him if he was gonna keep his place opened. He said yes. I said dont close until I get there. I called the DW told her my plan.

I walked down 41 flights. While walking down, the 2nd tower fell. By the time I got to the lobby smoke from that tower was all outside and security would not let anyone out. I went to the basement where the lunch room is and bought a few waters (and yes they charged us for the water)... got a bunch of napkins and went back upstairs. By then, you sould tell it was daylight but it was like a very foggy day. I left.

It was like walking on the moon with an inch or two of dust everywhere. I went to Water St. Made a left and kept going until I got to 118 St. Stopped a McD's for a burger and a soda. Then onto the Bronx. I think I made it to the Bronx by 1:30.

By the next AM I realized a dear friend of mine who worked for Cantor Fitzgerald survived by an uncanny set of events, but another dear friend Marni Pont O'Doherty, perished on the 86th Floor of Tower 2.

The IRS gave us 3 additional months to file. We went back to work 2 weeks later. Downtown smelled of burning debris until well after XMAS. And not a day went by when I didnt think I saw Marni.

I still have a hard time thinking about the events of 9/11. It was a life changing event. I will never forget that day for as long as I live.

Let's hope the progress continues without any surprises now...

OK, today just sucked bat juice!

My 'proforma' last interview turned out to be anything but, and I'm now back where I was before with the added deadline of getting out of the company as soon as possible. ARRGH! to quote Charlie Brown.

And, to add insult to injury. The car had to go to the shop today & we're out another $2200! That could have brought us to within $1500 of paying this trip off. Double-ARRGH!

OK, I've got that off my chest. I'm gonna go ketchup & hope that you all had a better day than I did.
