Did you ask for a formula

The formula for determining the PC/UMS Net Tonnage of all vessels, except those
subject to transitional relief measures, is:
PC/UMS Net Tonnage = K4(V) + K5(V) + CF1(VMC)

All we have to do is figure out what the variables mean.

where V = total volume in m3 and K = a figure from 0.22 up to 0.32, depending on the ship’s size (calculated by . GT is consequently a measure of the overall size of the ship.

[The Panama Canal/Universal Measurement System (PC/UMS) is based on net tonnage, modified for Panama Canal purposes. PC/UMS is based on a mathematical formula to calculate a vessel's total volume; a PC/UMS net ton is equivalent to 100 cubic feet of capacity.[3]

Thanks for clarifying everything.

Here is the answer:

http://matchship.com/calculator.htm

someone just needs to plug in the figures

:confused3

According to Wikipedia, the Magic has a length of 984 ft and a beam of 106 ft. The gross tonnage is 83,000 which may not exactly be the "PC Tons" requested, but lets assume it is in the ballpark...

The calculator you linked, gives a total toll of $213,310.00 plus another $13,000.00 (approximate) for other charges. Presumably, this calculator is for the current 2007 rates so it will be a little higher next year (I think I read about 10% increase per year?)

PC tonnage is supposed to be higher than GT.

According to some websites, average PC toll for cruise ships over last 5 years was $150,000 to $200,000.

I do remember that song! I still have the record(yes record! Does that date me?) of the Mama's and the Papa's!
and I still have a turntable!!!

Karen

Karen,

I posted a link to a video of Queen Lahtifia singing a beautiful rendition of this song. I just am passing through as I'm back from gymnastics - and on my way out to the beach with the kids. Try to look back to find the link - it is posted once and QUOTED at least once again. When you load it - you may have to enable the installation of a tool or something - enable it as it is safe. I had to do the same since my computer is brand new and has very few of the old things loaded.

At any rate - I gotta go - so we can do the beach and make it back in time for the other girls' gymnastics. Plus I wanna drop off a load of bottles for recycling - I'm tired of looking at the accumulation of plastic bottles here! Maybe I'll have enough in recycle credit to buy a nice beach umbrella.

We're looking at the Ford Hybred SUV -I forgot the name of it already. Anyone have any experience with hybreds? It is a company car option for my spouse - and we would probably buy it afterwards when it comes up for erenewal IF the buy out price were fair.

I hope to catch a few of ya late at chat tonight!

Cheers,

According to some websites, average PC toll for cruise ships over last 5 years was $150,000 to $200,000.

Then 175,000 for the pasengers would represent no postive gain - however compared to larger cruise ships this might be a net gain in revenue for the PC authority.

Unless, of course, the toll applies to the crew as well!

OK - 2nd attempt to break away! <how typical, eh?>

Adios!

Tom of course this is an increase not a new tax. Looking over the Panama Canal Toll Assessment Website it explains that since the Panamanian take over of the canal they have been restructuring their pricing, customizing it to the types of ships that pass through the canal. This move starting in 10/07 is a shift from cruise ships paying by tonnage to per berth charge. Disney was not going through the canal for free when calculating the cost of our cruise. I think that they are trying to tack this on to our bill since the chart from the Panama website shows that cruise ship charge/berth for previous crossings was N/A. That is because it was not based on berths but on tonnage. It is interesting that I did not find anyone complaining on the CruiseCritic site regarding this topic. Also I spotted an article from 2002-2003 regarding PC upping its taxes (when they originally started this pricing structure) that the cruise lines (not the passengers) were outraged because they would have to pay more. I hope that DCL corrects this and refunds part of this $100 surcharge.

Ok - I edited this in ... because it sort of FIT here.... and to Rodger (and everyone else) - I maintain the DCL guy Alan did NOT say he knew what was going on - and I just asked IF .... IF this were in substitui=tion of the tonnage tax/fee then would we get - and where was this refund on the suspected defunct fee? THis is hypothetical. I am hoping NOT to be inflammatory.... just curious.

Now for the 4th time - I gotta go - got just enuf time to return recyclables, build a sand castle and beach comb - and make it over from Malibu to gymnastics in Newbury Park. Rodger (the NUTmeg man who lives near by) knows ..... I'm a little of a nut to be doing this!

Thanks for the tip, Tom.

For those who did not know (can't remember if I posted it or just through PMs --old age setting in this morning), Europe is the reason we canceled the cruise. SWMBO came back from Paris talking about how much she wanted to take the kids over and we had a family meeting and the kids were much more interested in England and France then cruising again. So we are off plotting a tour of the UK, followed by a day in Paris, and of course, a stop to see our Pal Mickey at DL Paris.

How cool would that be! JR- it's GO-Today... and I'll dredge up a few others we have heard good things about. BUT - G-T was bargain priced and demonstrated outstanding service in the days after 9-11 when our friends (on a honey-mooon) were helped far beyond what was expected with calls and new travel arrangements by G-T. Plus the next time they bought with G-T they were comped with free days beyond the contract offer!!!! Who ever heard of THAT? These guys are a value and outstanding in service from what I've seen!

I wanna go to Europe but we have to renew all our passports and get a new one for the youngest! JR - you're gonna have a blast! And the image below is not related to this posting - it's just something I thought was pretty funny since I had a problem loading a Micorsoft program last nite on account of something with the "key" not being right - I was ticked at Microsoft!

and now - the 3rd time - I gotta go....

No editing to correct anything...

Tom I think that there will be more than 1,750 pax on board. This ship is sold out and we can assume we are somewhere between 2400-2600. That would be around $250,000 which would be an increase. There are 950 crew members (but they probably won't be charged, they have to get out and push/pull the Magic through:rotfl2: ).

Why wasn't the pirate allowed to go on jury duty?

The defense attorney deemed that he wasn't impARRRRRRRrrrrtial!

Ok... 5th time I gotta get going now -

- however, ROdger.... if you're right - and my suspicians are right that this is IN substitution - then we are all due some kind of ADJUSTMENT on the port charges. Who can squeeze an answer on this - anyone?

OK.... I'm going now.

Adios!

How is our Angelina doing these days?

Oh, she is doing OK, it's her grandmother who is driving me nuts these days.......:rotfl2:

We just returned from seeing "Hair Spray" all three of us really enjoyed it, will probably add it to our collection when it comes out on DVD.

Also, Hazel and I have a date for next Saturday night to see a live stage performance of Beauty and the Beast. A local community theatre group http://www.thebroadwaytheatre.org/ is putting it on and it is getting really good reviews. I found out this morning that the director who did Brigadoon at Angelina's high school this past year, is also the director for Beauty and the Beast. Angelina will be going with her boyfriend to his grandparents 50th wedding anniversary surprise party next Saturday, so she will miss out on the show.

ATTENTION ATTENTION

We have been upgraded for FREE ....I repeat we have been Upgraded for FREE..

I was surfing the net this Morning and went to DCL to look at my Resi and OMG there it was , our stateroom had changed to 8074 ...:scared1: :scared1: I was like Okay , what happened ????.. So I called DCL and we have been confirmed on an Upgrade from a Cat 6 to a Cat 4 on the Med Repo ....

I know for some this is not a big deal but I thought it was wonderful ...

I guess they knew Ole Captain Jack needed a little extra room ...:rotfl2: :rotfl2:

So I repeat we are now in room 8074 no longer are we in 6104 ...now I have to change my Magnets ....

pirate:

Congratulations Captain!

We're very excited for you. Hope you have a great time in Europe. Too bad we'll be missing you by a few days back here at WDW when you bring back the Magic!

Congrats on the upgrade there Capt'n!!! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

I got this from my agent at DU when I aksed about whether the tax applied was per cabin or per person and if there was provisions for babies, infants etc like on the fare (which should have been my clue: DCL doesn't really charge a 'fare' for infants under 2 but does collect gov't taxes and fees):

I’m afraid $100.00 per ‘warm body’ is correct. The only exception is if your cruise was paid in full prior to the tax increase.

And when asked if the fee already hit or could we pay it off now...

Yes, the increase happened on the 17th. We didn’t receive the letter until yesterday.

Looks like we are in the clear luckily for us, I asked our TA to take the final payment on the 6th and it took about a week to appear on the credit card but it was much earlier than the 17th.

Not so good for everyone else though :-(

Thank you so much for posting though, we had our fingers crossed about it.
