Well - I am retired - I retired early in order to help DD care for DGS Matt. But, I AM writing a novel!! And I think all the time about what creative ways I'll spend my time now that my "nanny" duties for Matt are at an end.
Getting older doesn't mean dreams are over!!!!

OMG....I would LOVE to know more.....please feel welcome to PM me or post here if others will be interested! Would love to know about how you decided to do it, what kind of book, we could exchange ideas ;) ....... now ya got me intrigued!!!!!

I'd said on the boards (and do did my DH joel110 long before me) that our girls didn't want to go to the kids club either! We had to request time at Palos for them not to call us just to get our "Adult dinner" in......but I'd like to say that if that happens....let's plan something for the kids to do for a while and work out a schedule to get some "BIG KID" time for us adults! If we can plan all these pirate events and such surely we can find a way to get kids engaged for a few hours with crafts, a scavenger hunt, or activities so parents can go have some time alone to enjoy each other for a while.

Consider not "splitting up" to get an hour alone....consider finding a way for all of us to get a bit of time to ourselves......if that means kids club for some; then great! if that means on a sea day some parents watch the kids swim so others can do something special then lets find a way to do that!....Thanks for the encouragement that there are others!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean that sincerely! There are days I'd pay someone's teen to babysit or watch kids in teh pool just to get a couple hours to myself or my hubby! ya never know....maybe there a couple teens who want to earn a little spending money on the trip, eh?????:stir: :stir: :stir:

Sounds like a plan - We do have Palo booked for our anniversary so the kids know they are going to the kids club that evening. We planned it so that we could go with them to the dining room and we will have our meal later at Palo. DD13 loves little ones she is actually a counselor in training this summer at the camp she is attending, for the 5yr old group. Whenever we are on a cruise she always ends up playing with the little ones in the pool

That's awesome! i have two girls....9 1/2 and 7...I keep hoping the will meet others and enjoy; but i can see my 7 year old would rather be with ANYONE in the pool than with others her age in the club. HEY I COULD BE WRONG.....you always feel like as a mother you "know" your kids. I would still think that if there are some kids who aren't into the kids club we (as parents) could work out some activity to keep them entertained elsewhere while parents have some time alone.

Believe me, if DD is in the pool at the same time she will probably end up playing with them. My kids weren't much into the kids club either they mostly pick and choose depending on what is going on and if something interests them they go for that activity. If it doesn't they usually are with us at the pool or DS is off playing chess with DH somewhere when he has enough of pool time

1) What's the FIRST thing that comes to mind that you're looking forward to about our cruise?
Celebrating our birthdays on the ship...We have never been on vacation for our summer birthdays before!

2) What is your FAVORITE kind of DESSERT which you hope to get on the cruise?
I love the peanut butter pie...oh its soooo bad!!!

3) What are your favorite hobbies (or substitute interests - if any)
Planning and taking Disney trips, traveling, having fun with the kids

4) Do you have a favorite music - bands - performers - or such?
I love Disney park music the most, the music loops while waiting in line for rides, and the area music, etc. I also love soundtrack music. I love all styles except country :crazy2: and I am not thrilled with 80's music which DH LOVES!

5) Right or left handed? OR.. are we ambidexterous?
right

6) Pose a QUESTION for the NEXT person to respond to this
Do you have a countdown method you are using for the TOAL, and if so, what is it?

7) Answer the last question posed by someone responding to this edition of "7 questions"..... alternatively... you may answer any and ALL other questions posed by DIS neighbors in question 6 replies... REMEMBER... this is all intended to be just simple fun and chuckles for all. Be polite yet playful in what we ask here....

Are you going to the adult clubs after dinner?
Definitely yes! DH and I are looking forward to the adult cabaret shows the most!

My wife's response (for those who saw the science of Star Wars exhibit) "Cool, maybe they can make it out of legos!"
To ensure it would work, right;)

Sorry I wasn't on yesterday...no internet service in the hospital! June's doing fine. She's still in a little pain, but seems to be in good spirits. The doctor said the surgery was "textbook" so that's good. Right now, she's just enjoying peace and quiet for about 30 more minutes until she has to go home.
Glad June is OK:thumbsup2

OK OK OK...that got WAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY to thought provoking....but as a mom I knew most would say "time with family" or "time with the kids"; just wondered if there are a few brave ones of us who really DO appreciate a couple hours alone reading a book or with other ladies doing something for Moms instead of for kids. THANKS FOR THE ENCOURAGEMENT! You're awesome:lovestruc :lovestruc :lovestruc

I love my alone time and the time with my DH, but most of the time I spend with my kids is making them do something they don't want to do (homework, chores) or something I don't want to do (transport to friend's house). The best time I had on our last cruise was swimming with the dolphins with my family. So much fun for all of us. For a few minutes I wasn't their parent:cloud9:

My kids are like this too, it all depends on what is going on at the Clubs. My DD14 is a little more social and will want to be around kids her age no matter what they are doing, where the others will come and go during the trip. Our DS who will be 6 in a few days is getting more and more used the the clubs, so its always a different opinion with him.

We are doing this in Puerto Vallarta, With there being 6 in our group, we may have a group to ourselves. We are really looking forward to this, especially seeing your good comments about it. I think it will be a wonderful memory for us as well!

DD13 too - she will actually be 2 weeks shy of her 14th birthday so I am hoping they will let her move up to the Stack as she is more social and has been in teen clubs on other cruises

That sounds awesome! There are some activities that you CAN'T BEAT doing with your kids (depending on the age)...when they think it's cool that is a great feeling!

Sounds great to me. Did the no sun thing bother you in December? I am ok here from April through the holidays. January through March are hard because it is so gray and dark. People have the misconception that Washington gets a lot of rain. We do get quite a bit, but that isn't what gets to me. It is the never-ending overcast days, day after day after day, when all you see is gray. As I have gotten older, it has gotten worse for me. I need some sun and more frequently!:)
That's what I dislike the most about living here in Washington also. The no sun for months at a time really is depressing. This winter more than most though. I lost my Mom last October so I've really been struggling with the depression this year. This weather we have been having the past couple weeks has been killing me. The summers are wonderful though!

We did the swim in Nassau, not sure if the one in PV is exactly the same. I don't remember hearing anyone who hasn't liked the dolphin swim. It's expensive, but soo much fun. If they do the foot push with the dolphins you may want a one piece bathing suit as the water can drag on the bottom part of the suit and you have to hold on so it doesn't come off:rolleyes1

Mine are 14 and 11 now (they were DS12 and DD9 at the time)-fun age in that they still like us and are old enough to like some of the same things we do. They also get along pretty well (most of the time).
I am starting to see the eyes rolling a bit though, so here comes the teen years:worried:

Isnt' that hilarious???? That' show I judge it; if they are young enough they still love ya, want to do stuff with ya, and thinks you are awesome then they are "AT THE RIGHT AGE"......about two years after that they think you are stupid, have no class, and shouldn't be "acting cool"......

DOH!!!! take away my charge card...Although i did get a couple nice things..

Look at my "catch".

The pantsuit is iffy as i think it's going to be too big. (the smallest size the had left in that clearance item) I'm hoping it's made really small though.

Mickey Mouse Club graphic

For all those "do it yourself-ers" out there. I found the graphic in a book, scanned it, cleaned up the scan a little and posted it at photobucket. I'm just posting a link, since I scanned it as large as I could and it is over 400MB! I don't know if any of our pirates are still using dial-up, but if they are they wouldn't appreciate waiting for that to load up :cool1:

You can look at and download it from here. It is at 250dpi and is about 8" in diameter. If you want it smaller (i.e. kid's shirts or smaller women's shirts) you should be able to resize it down without too much trouble.

I would suggest using the transfer paper that they say is for "dark shirts" even though it is going on a white shirt since the colors will be much more vibrant. Unfortunately, it ends up feeling a little plastic-y - but it isn't too bad (DS tends to be very sensitive to how clothes feel and he isn't bothered too much by this as long as the whole shirt isn't covered with it. The other advantage of the "dark shirts" is that when you print onto the transfer you do not have to reverse the image - much easier for those who haven't tried this before.

For those who want to try this and haven't done it before, it isn't all that difficult - I'm not particularly crafty and have made a number of shirts for DS. A few tips I've learned over time.

* Wash the shirt first - sometimes there is sizing or starch in them which will cause the transfer to not work as well. When you wash it, skip the fabric softener or dryer sheet.

* 100% cotton works best, but I've done OK with 60% cotton

* Cut out the design, don't try to iron on the entire sheet. Square corners are particularly difficult so always cut rounded. (The circle shape of this logo should work great!)

* Preheat the iron - you want it good and hot before you start.

* Always iron on a hard surface - and ironing board will NOT work. I have used a butcher-block counter top and my glass cooktop in the past. I have also used the floor (wood laminate). Put a thin piece of fabric between the hard surface and the T-s**** - I usually use an old pillowcase. Lightly iron the shirt flat before you put the transfer on.

* Take a minute to make sure it is centered - If you can't eyeball it, use a ruler! Nothing looks sillier than an off-center design.

* Push down hard as you iron.

* Check the instruction from the transfer paper for how long to iron. Set a timer since once you are ironing and pushing down it starts seeming like forever and its only been 30 seconds!

* In the future, when you wash the T-s****, turn it inside out so that the transfer is on the inside.

If anyone has any questions, just PM or post and I'll try and answer. There are probably others here who have done this before also who could also offer advise. I have often found T-S**** on sale at Hobby Lobby or other crafty stores for $3 or $4. The transfer paper can sometimes be found at Dollar stores, but even if you buy it somewhere like Target I think you can get it for around $10 for 3 sheets, so $3.33 per shirt for a grand worse case total of about $7.33 per shirt.

Pamela

Thanks for this - another project to add to the list!

We have a program like that here as well. It starts the first week day after school closes and runs until the last week day before school opens in the fall.

It's open to everyone 18 and under regardless of income. The only stipulation is you're not allowed to take ANYTHING out of the cafeteria. All of the food and drinks must be consumed in that area.

Many of the summer camps will walk their campers over to the closet elementary or middle school for lunch.

It's the same rules here as well. We get daycares as well. We pretty much had double the turnout today. We'll see what tomorrow brings...we're having Steak Fingers,Mashed Potatoes and Gravy,Dinner Roll and Fruit.
