Internet keeps going down, so I'll make this short. We're crossing Lake Gatun right now and they're doing a fantastic job of keeping us aware of what's happening--live narration on channel 13 in the rooms and hallways. Not as bad a crush on deck as I'd thought it would be. The very front is jammed, but you can get beautiful views and photos from other areas. They started serving coffee and pastries (and full breakfast in Topsiders) on deck 4, 9 and 10 at 5am. Full, wonderful barbecue (salmon, chicken, vegetable kebabs, corn-on-the cob, corn bread, slaw, cookies...) on deck 9 for lunch. The canal transit is as exciting as I'd hoped.

I'm sorry, but you won't fine ME sleeping on deck just to get a good view. My balcony will work just fine. Crazy people.:sad2:

I'd say that a sub is definitely a valid reason for the web cams being down. ::yes::

Now I really am outta here. Have some serious packing and organizing to do. I do not believe in waiting until the last moment. Never know what might come up to thwart my plans.

Which explains, I think, the mysterious breakdown of the webcams :cool2:

And now the sub is going by the bridge.....

Well the sub must be ahead of the Magic as the cam is down again

Good points, the webcam has just gone down again maybe the Magic is following.

OK my grants are in with 2.5 hours to spare. I think I've done enough work today :)

.

Maybe Enna will make the camera break down when we go through :cool2:

Sub must be near Centennial Bridge now. That one is down.

Those of us in steerage don't have the benefit of a balcony.

From http://www.passporterboards.com/for...al-passporters-tale-live-update-5-15-a-8.html

I am sitting on the veranda watching the lake and jungle covered mountains that surround the lake pass by. We just returned from a surprise brunch at Palo (we had wanted to do Palo on Canal day and could not get it booked - but lucked into it!!). I have been up since 430am. Went up on deck to watch the sunrise and our entry into the Gatun locks - we were delayed - as a result of the unscheduled arrival of a US Navy sub - which ended up with priority... SO - we entered the locks about 8am instead of 630. We are making good time across the lake and should be at the next locks around 230pm CDT. I had planned on trying to get into the gym today - but the early morning is catching up with me - as is the heat!!! Panama is one HOT place! Would hate to see this in August. We have been passing dredges (I've seen cutterhead and bucket so far) in the lake and as any good Corps biologist should - I have photos!! So far I've taken more than 300 photos and 5 or 6 video grabs - and that was just the first locks. Good thing the batteries for the camera are rechargeable (I should say there are 30+ pics of the submarine - for dad of course).

Tonight is a low key night on board - no show - but they are showing the new Narnia movie (not sure I will make it to movie time) and we are supposedly having lobster for dinner (gee force me - I had crab, shrimp and salmon at brunch). Lesley and I are considering a load of laundry or two today and I want some rainforest time before dinner at 830pm.

Tomorrow is another day at sea - and we have a high tea scheduled at 3pm - I may try to squeeze in another spa treatment - just playing that by ear.

Well I know that is short HI - and I hope at least one of you got to see us on the Panama Canal webcam as we passed through Gatun!!

I know, sorry. Still, I think people will be moving around all day and it really won't be necessary to sleep out there. UNLESS...it's a really beautiful night and you have someone to share a romantic interlude with. :lovestruc

I guess those poor people don't realize that they could have spent the last year and a half making friends who have balconies.

i have been lurking around for a while, but i figured today was a good day to take the plunge and join your thread!! my family of five will be on the cruise and with the upcoming excursion booking (and the pif :guilty: )this trip is actually feeling like a reality. :woohoo:

all of your info so far has been so helpful so i wanted to share too! when i was on the panama canal site today i found a cool kids link with info about the canal. i'm not sure if you guys have seen it but it is really interactive for the kids (who am i kidding. i had a good time looking at it and seeing how the canal worked!). my 3 kids are pretty young (8, 5 & 3) but i am still looking for little things to try and explain the canal to them. here's the link www.pancanal.com/eng/persona/k/index.html

i loook forward to the next few months of planning! pam

Here you go ...

The song is called Hoist the Colours by Walt Disney Records. Here are the lyrics to the song.

Yo, ho, haul together,
hoist the colors high.
Heave ho,
thieves and beggars,
never shall we die.

The king and his men
stole the queen from her bed
and bound her in her Bones.
The seas be ours
and by the powers
where we will well roam.

Yo, ho, haul together,
hoist the colors high.
Heave ho, thieves and beggars,
never say we die.

Some men have died
and some are alive
and others sail on the sea
– with the keys to the cage...
and the Devil to pay
we lay to Fiddler's Green!

The bell has been raised
from it's watery grave...
Do you hear it's sepulchral tone?
We are a call to all,
pay head the squall
and turn your sail toward home!

Yo, ho, haul together,
hoist the colors high.
Heave ho, thieves and beggars,
never say we die

I suggested that months ago.

No kids at the time.
He always gets to go do fun stuff while I sit at home.
Although I will say that he is very excited to go through the canal again. This time he shouldn't need to be deloused when the journey is over.
