What the heck is gout anyway?![]()
Gout is basically a very painful form of arthritis. It normally affects the big toe, but can also attack any joint. I tend to get my gout flare-ups in the ankle and knee. The knee is the worst!
msaseifert is correct that it's caused by the body's inability to breakdown uric acid. My doctor described it as thousands of tiny needles attacking a joint. It causes extreme swelling and eventually can cause deformation in the joint if not properly treated.
It is usually hereditary. A diet rich in purines can cause a flare-up -- foods high in purines are alcohol, red meat especially organs and rich seafood such as salmon, oysters, scallops, etc. This is why it used to be known as the disease of kings. My doctor told me that a cruise is the worst vacation for a gout sufferer due to all of the rich food! I'm going to prove him wrong!
The other issue with gout is that it can hurt your kidneys if you're unable to get the uric acid out of your body.
It's not a pleasant disease, but it's one of the oldest diagnosed diseases on record.
Like msaseifert, I exercised regularly, was at an ideal weight, ate healthy foods, so should have been low risk.
Last year, I was limping around after a particularly bad flare-up. I was going to lunch with a vendor and she asked me what was wrong. When I told her she laughed as she thought gout was an old fashioned disease. Needless to say, I did not end up hiring her company.
