I know this is probably a silly post....but it occured to me as I was reading a news story this morning.

If you are renting a car here in CA for your visit...we just had a law passed that you can not use your cell phone (not even to pick it up to dial and then use an ear piece) while driving. You need to pull over.

The only reason I bring this up is it is a really new law (just went into effect on July 1st) and if you had been here before and used your phone..you wouldn't necessarily know.

They are giving out tickets like crazy here...the CHP gave out over 2500 the first two weeks. Wouldn't want anyone to start their vacation off with a ticket

Anyways...just an FYI.

Des....I think that is a great law! I wish we could pass it here.

It (literally) drives me crazy when I am behind someone who doesn't seem to know what they are doing, only to pass them and see that they were on their cell phone and not paying attention! :headache:

Any chess players on board?

My DS11 - loves to play chess - he doesn't compete, isn't up to that level yet but he is taking some instructional classes and just enjoys playing

Any other children that may be interested in just getting together one day, informally, to play? I believe they have chess boards in one of the bar areas, which are open during the day for everyone

This can be discussed once onboard if that works better for everyone
I didn't want to set up another meet time or anything like that ahead of time as I am sure some people would like to just have some down time

We will be in room 6540 if anyone decides that they would like to play, give us a call

Jo

Another chess player here - DS9 loves to play. My only concern is that he isn't always a good loser! Unfortunately, he nearly always beat the kid next door so he is too used to winning  When he plays DH or my DF, he doesn't win so easily and gets frustrated.

:rotfl: Oh yes, good choice! "I want it NOW!"

And of course, we could get a bottle of the fizzy lifting drink, and float our way to LA. Save on airfare.

"You're turning violet, Violet!"

Love Williy Wonka .. but... (getting ready to walk the plank here) the original..not so much a fan of the remake.

I love the books and the 1st movie. I've only seen parts of the remake, but so far I like the original better. DS9 is an only child and if he starts getting too demanding I call him "Veruka Salt"! It is amazing how quickly that can straighten him out :rotfl2:

I knew I saw the info somewhere! :rotfl: My treatment is at 4p.m. so hopefully that is enough time to get everyone their lanyards.

Hopefully, a lot of us will be able to pick them up at the terminal so you have fewer to deal with on board! Have you considered getting someone on each pirate bus to distribute/collect cash during the drive? I don't think there are lists yet of who is on which bus, but once that is available that might be a way to spread out the work....

Hello everyone!

Can't believe 18 months went by so quickly!

We already pulled out the suitcases yesterday and started packing. Boy do we have alot of stuff. Haven't reached panic mode yet.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Hi Pete! Pete and I were just chatting about you last night - remembering our meet last year.

I haven't started packing - yet - but I've got tons and tons of lists made up!

Really?? Is DCL the only cruise line that lets you do that? I could swear the others take it til the last night. But then, DCL is the only one to let us bring it onboard at the beginning of the cruise, too.

DCL has more of their profit margin built into the base price of the cruise. Many of the others are looking to turn their profit through alcohol sales, casinos, etc.

I know what you mean about it being awe-inspiring, Michelle. This will be my ds's third year of Catholic Youth Summer Camp (in August), and the sight of all of those young people praising God and worshipping together....it brings tears to my eyes every year! :)

My ds will want to attend Stubenville when he is a little older. The Stuebenville conferences here (in Ohio) were every weekend June 13 through July 11, 4 conferences total. And it was at Franciscan University of Stuebenville, Ohio (imagine that!) :goodvibes

Deanna, many of our teenagers have aspirations of attending college at Steubenville but it is very difficult to get into. Fortunately, San Diego has a great Catholic university and we've been really lucky to have hosted Steubenville West for the past five years. I highly recommend it. They can not attend until they have completed 8th grade. My boys went the first summer they could (in between 8th grade and starting high school) and although they were some of they few incoming freshman in our youth group who attended they loved it!

And I know it hasn't been said lately but THANK YOU for arranging the masses while we are on board, our family sincerely appreciates it. (Okay, maybe my DSs might be a little resentful thinking they were getting out of mass for two weeks, but DH and I are truly grateful  )

If anyone is interested in a Dolphin Swim in Acapulco - It is now available
I know it was sold out for a while

We have that law in Santa Fe and Albuquerque. And really it's a stupid law. First, it doesn't stop people from using their cell phones while driving... We drive by people driving stupid all the time only to realize they're talking on the phone (and holding it up to their ear). Plus studies have shown the real danger is just the fact that the driver is talking to someone who isn't in the car... When drivers talk to people in the car, the conversation will pause when something weird happens on the road so that the driver can pay attention. If someone is on a cell phone (even a hands free), they pay less attention to what's going on around them. Also it's just as dangerous to be eating or drinking or shaving or applying makeup while driving, but those are not illegal. In fact, it would be difficult to make those illegal....

Plenty of time for panic mode.....

New Jersey has issued 50,000 or so tickets on our year old ban.....

I love the people holding the phone with one hand and gesturing as they talk with the other.

Sitting behind a car at a red light a few years ago, watching the person in front of me having a conversation on cell phone, she hangs up the phone, puts it down and hits the gas, right into the car in front of her that was stopped for the still red light.

Not silly at all...Thanks for the heads up. I rarely use my cell phone when I drive unless I'm using the built-in bluetooth, but it would be my luck to receive a phone call and get a ticket for it.

I don't know if this has been discussed yet, but are any of you doing any excursions at this port? DW and I are considering doing one here and leaving DD and DS in the kids club.

Cartagena excursions -- Check with PBader (Paula) about the Mr. Emerald tours. We're doing the DCL Best of tour ourselves. There's also a thread on the piratezone but I can't link it right now at work.

Is everyone still doing the cliff divers excursion? I'm wondering if we should bother paying that much after the reports of it from others. But then there really isn't anything ELSE to do with such a short, and early, time there! :(
Is everyone else still going to the cliff divers excursion thru DCL?

Still debating....part of me wants to cancel to save the $$$ after the WB reviews, but it is Acapulco afterall and it's probably the only time I'll ever be there. Anone else.

That is very nice. I see you used some Karen Foster embilishments!

I too think our FE looks awesome as June did a great job with it. When she told me she was going to add embelishments, I had no idea what she was talking about. And now someone not only knows she uses embelishments, but the name brand!:scared1: Too funny!:rotfl2:

I often see people reading the newspaper while driving......:scared1: :scared1:

I meant to reply to BIP earlier, but we are still doing the cliff divers and city tour (the shorter of 2). 1/2 tempted to go on our own, but figure DCL is less hassle.

Your FE does look awesome! Great job June!

Michelle.....all "thanks" really goes to Fr. Mike, I just sent a few emails...But I appreciate the kind words! :goodvibes

I think it will be very special and memorable to celebrate Mass onboard together. I'm really looking forward to it!

When I said that my ds would like to attend Steubenville when he is a little older, I should have clarified that I meant the youth conference. He plans to get a degree in computer animation one day. As luck would have it Ohio State has a great program in that! ;) Although, I think that would be really cool to take a class taught by Dr. Scott Hahn at Franciscan University!
