This is the same situation as my kids. They are not counted as absent until they actually show up for school. DH had meetings with both principals back in January and got their blessing to go (in writing - LOL). My kids will both miss the first ten days of school but since they are both straight A students neither principal gave me any grief. They both promised me kids would be assigned classes and not just crammed in somewhere after the fact (they are both in gifted classes) and I will go to back to school night to meet the teachers and tell them the deal. I debated back and forth on them missing two weeks but in the end I figured with DD starting high school in 2009 we wouldnt be able to do this (thankfully our tortola cruise gets back 2 days before school starts) and we might as well do it while we can.

Our principal came right out and said that the kids will be learning more going throught the canal than they could teach them in school the first week. They were also assigned teachers and I will email them before we leave since we will miss the open house. Most of what they are going to do the first couple weeks is just review so they aren't going to be missing anything. DS was invited to the gifted program for 4th and 5th graders so he will not lose his spot since they know what is going on when the kids don't show up. This just made the most sense. I am so glad that we decided on the August cruise instead of the May repo because it would have been a nightmare for DS to take his end of grade tests as a makeup after we rushed back from CA.

I'll Never get rid of mine.....and we have no kids!! Kinda silly, but I feel like it would be bad luck or something.

:) Even if DD doesn't wear it I will not regret saving it. I guess you are right about the luck ... kind of like not getting rid of all the maternity outfits because if you do you are probably going to need more.

Wow...I have not heard that one before! That would be wonderful. I wonder if its a school policy or district or other. Anybody else hear of this before? I will have to call both the schools, since my kids will miss the first few days too!

From what I understand this is a NC regulation/law. I wasn't aware of it either until she told me and every teacher who I have talked to since said that is right. It should at least be a district wide thing so I would call the school board and verify their policy.

It's probably different everywhere. Here it's basically left up to the prinicpal- who in our experience basically leaves it up to the teachers.

ITA that it isn't up to the principals. It is a policy that when in force is for all the schools in that district at the minimum. The kids will be marked as no shows until they attend class here.

I posted something over an hr ago and I didnt see it come up... But yes, i am very proud of my son as well. He called me today from BS camp and he is getting ready for the cruise by rock climbing. He too is 15 and hopes to get his EAGLE by the time we leave. His project is to make a memorial garden at his high school. His principle asked him if he could do that for his project. Now we are collecting bottles and cans for the cost of it. Some companies have come through with donations as well.

For any parents who has a son in scouts and they think they want to quite.. DONT LET THEM>> find another troop to keep them interested if you need to. Being an EAGLE SCOUT will open the doors for college and so much more.

DS is 12 and loves scouting, his goal is eagle, and is very excited. He just got back from Camp Yawgoog and made 2nd class, with one more reuirement to move onto 1rst. Next week he's a den chief for the cub scout camp, earning more camp money. I was involved with Cubs, and in Scouts as a rep. but the things I fear is he getting off track, when the three WWW's kick in.
Wheels, Women, & Work. He has some great motivation for eagle, just gotta keep him on track. On many of my candidate interviews when a guys say's he is an eagle scout (usually towards the end they'll mention this) it certainly brings him up a notch or two over other candidates.
Good Luck
J

I work in a school office, and this was our first week of school (year round). We don't mark anyone absent the first 3 days of school, but after that we start dropping kids, that we call after phone messages have not been . Getting prepared for and that first week of school can be crazy, and realize that your children are just a couple in a vast of hundreds. You may want to email or call(leave a message on the attendance line if you can) and remind the office that you are going out of town and that you had discussed this with the principal prior to the school year ending. That way there are no surprises coming home.

ITA that it isn't up to the principals. It is a policy that when in force is for all the schools in that district at the minimum. The kids will be marked as no shows until they attend class here.

I asked our staff - and they show the kids not attending the start of school as ENROLLED but as NOT having started the year yet. And they asked we remind them in writing before the start of the year - so they will HOLD our spot until they START the school year. This make any sense?

OK... I gotta run to our daughters SWIM MEET! Then it's an the ICE CREAM social and swim party this afternoon that we're hosting!

Well, well, well, I take a few days off of the Dis to get some scrapbooking done and look what happens! A new thread and all - wow! Christopher has kept me up to date on a few of the topics so I guess I don't feel totally lost. I have missed the conversation though! I feel like this group is an extension of my family!:goodvibes

We got our FE gifts this week and have been buying a few things. I really need to get to work on my Scarlett costume. I am not sure what I am going to do though--DS11 thinks I need to raise the neckline - ha:rotfl: He cracks me up. I have gotten the boys excited and now they want to dress up. All we have to do is get Christopher to do it. Maybe I will pack something for him anyway!

It's probably different everywhere. Here it's basically left up to the prinicpal- who in our experience basically leaves it up to the teachers. So we haven't had any problems in the past since all the teachers were totally fine if our kids missed any school for a vacation (it's always been beginning the last couple of days of school or a day/two days at the beginning or end of a holiday break- all times they aren't really doing a whole lot in school anyway) BUT this year was different... begining of school. so far I talked with the elementary principal (youngest two) and he basically said the same thing. He said that even though they are usually automatically registered (ie: if they went to that elementary the previous year and are again- we don't even have to go register in the summer/etc. like new students have to) that he'd make sure they weren't automatically registered and basically they didn't miss a day until the first day they came.
(however, for us he said he'd "ghost" them in a class so it would all be set where they'd go instead of having to squeeze them in a week after school started- which is helpful since we both agreed there are a few boys that my DS doesn't need to be in the same class with them. Long story but this last year was a doozy- with him in a class that was almost ALL boys and a few of them trouble makers..... -some even got suspended a few times during the year and DS kinda joined in with misbehavior at times to be "cool" or "liked" by the other boys. So I'm glad he's ghosting him in a class those boys aren't in!)

I haven't talked with the highschool yet EXCEPT for band... because eldest has to miss some of the summer band camp before school starts. I didn't (and still don't) know when would be the best time to mention this.. before or after registration. I'm kinda afraid if we wait till after registration maybe it will be easier since she's already got her classes. I'm kinda afraid if they say the same thing as elementary that she'll have a hard time getting in the classes she needs to be in for the credits she needs her freshman year. In her case I might rather her be counted absent than mess up the entire year by not getting the classes she needs. We'll see. Last year I noticed signs up by the highschool when I drove by- that said the dates of registration and it was late July. I called before the end of the year to find out when THIS years registration would be and they said they didn't know yet.. and I haven't seen signs yet! I just hope registration isn't different this year and smack right when we'll already be gone! hope hope hope

From what I understand this is a NC regulation/law. I wasn't aware of it either until she told me and every teacher who I have talked to since said that is right. It should at least be a district wide thing so I would call the school board and verify their policy.

Thanks for all the replys (plus a few more I didn't quote) I've added it to my to do list's....along with a few hundred other things....LOL

Tall Ship LA 2008 site is up with information.

roger, for some reason, the link didn't work for me. Did anyone else have any luck with it.

I know, we're missing almost 9 days of school, but have discussed it with the schools to get the blessing of the principals and admin of the schools.

ITA that it isn't up to the principals. It is a policy that when in force is for all the schools in that district at the minimum. The kids will be marked as no shows until they attend class here.

I wish our district would enforce district wide policies, but nearly everything in Colorado is left up to the principal. This causes huge differences in the schools -- even those just 2 miles apart as it really depends on who the principal is. We had to change one of our son's schools mid-year due to some issues that weren't being addressed. Fortunately, the district does let you to "choice-in" to schools outside of your normal boundaries.

DS is 12 and loves scouting, his goal is eagle, and is very excited. He just got back from Camp Yawgoog and made 2nd class, with one more reuirement to move onto 1rst. One of the best ways scouting can counteract the WWW factor are the honor camp programs (Order of the Arrow or Mic-O-Say) offerred at the summer camps. Make sure that your son's council has a strong Order of the Arrow program. If so, OA will help keep your son motivated to stay involved to continue to grow within Order of the Arrow. When I was 17, I was flipping burgers at Wendy's and had no intention to go to summer camp. I was still a little involved in Scouts (already had Eagle), but still had room to advance within our council's OA program so I told Wendy's that I needed 10 days off and I went to camp. Twenty-four years later, I'm glad I did it as I reached the highest level.

The timing this week about scouting is odd. I hardly ever mention the fact that I'm an Eagle anymore, but I received a resume from someone this past week and he mentioned that he was an Eagle Scout even though he was in his mid-30's and has been in the workplace for 15 years. It did tell me that the person stuck with something and didn't give up!

Hi....AndyR's mother in law(the nice kind!) checking in! Grass's

Welcome!!

Hi....AndyR's mother in law(the nice kind!) checking in! Grass's

Hi Louise,

I'll do some intros....

Fellow pirate:s. this post is from my DMIL Louise. Her DH is Greg. They are in the cabin next to us.

I'll leave it up to Greg to explain how he got the nickname 'Grass' ;) (No it not what you think)

Andy

BIP- It is NOT leftup to the principal. It is at least TX law that kids are not considered enrolled until they show up the 1st day.

That's interesting.... I have a friend that had to cancel a trip to WDW because Arlington moved their start date up and they already had a trip booked -- almost a year in advanced so her dh could get the time off work! The principal of their elementary school told her that if her dd missed the first 3 days of 1st grade it was an automatic failure! I was so angry for her!

This was a few years ago.
