This is my one sons school ...my other son who is 15 has been home with flu for 2 days. His High School has also had many out sick. Just curious what your schools have been saying/showing. My DH sells tools and equipment all over the US(mostly to the military's customers have been saying that lots of their employees kids are out sick.

The company that he contracts out of has lots of there employees out also due to their kids being sick...not the Adults...their kids.
They are saying that the flu they have is mild....just as my sons is. However will keep an eye open for secondary infections.

Today at LMMS we had 73 6th grade students and 4 staff members out experiencing flu-like symptoms. All persons attended camp last week. Under the direction of our superintendent and with the support of extra custodial staff, LMMS will be sanitized tonight including the locker rooms, bathrooms, classrooms, door knobs, and surface counters. We will continue to speak to the students about the importance of handwashing and not sharing food or drinks.
I ask that you please keep your child home is he or she is running a fever or experiencing any other flu-like symptoms such as vomitting, chills, or sore throats. Our intent is not to panic our families or staff but to keep you informed so that you are better able to make decisions about keeping your child home if he or she exhibits any of these symptoms. To reiterate, these students and staff members spent last week at camp together. Our numbers of 7th and 8th grade absences remain typical for this time of year.

We just had our first two local deaths - a child and an adult.. From what I read this morning, 2 local counties are getting hit very hard right now and quite a few students are out with the flu..

Our school seemed to be hit badly in the previous two weeks - over 50 of about 300 students were out.

I just heard that a junior high a few miles away has 67 of 319 kids out today.

Ouch!

30% out of one child's school. 25% out of the other. One in our family has been sick for 10 days.

Hmm...we had one HS near us have 973 kids out with "flu-like symptoms" so they closed the school. I honestly don't think all 973 kids had the actual flu though. The schools have been very strict about having the kids stay home if they have *any* symptom flu or not, that could even in any possible way be considered the flu.

I haven't gotten a clue how many kids at our school have been out with the symptoms but not necessarily the flu.

The school that had 973 kids out has a student body of about 2,000 kids.

so many students out with both the seasonal flu and H1N1 and what ever else they get. So far everyone I know who's kids have gotten sick have recovered just fine. The flu that they have been getting has been mild. Temps running the same as all flus. Glad that for most it is mild.

I have no doubt that most kids are getting the H1N1 because kids that dont usually get the flu like my son, has. He is playing his Xbox right now. Temp down to 99.2 without Tylenol. His Best friend that is home sick is also home playing Xbox with him. He is also feeling much better. I did not get my son Tamiflu either. However it was offered.

Lets hope for most that it stays mild and does not mutate. one thing is for sure it moves fast. But we are also not sure who has the seasonal flu or the H1N1...that will be hard to ever know for sure.

This is what really annoys me. My cousin who lives down in VA, near DC "has H1N1" or so that is what her Dr. said. In her son's school there are about 60 kids out and a few in her son's class. He is not sick but she is coughing and sneezing very achey and had a fever. She contacted her Dr. and he told her to NOT COME IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Stay home and keep the kids home just in case. What a load of malarchy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would be outraged at this. Maybe she just has a cold or the regular flu, I am telling all of you out there that are really truly concerned, this is not a big deal and most people are overreacting and they have either a cold or a regular type of flu.

They are not testing everyone because it takes too much time, that is what the DR. told her. I would report him personally. If this is such an "Epidemic" as they say, then ALL should be documented.

He said if she really really doesn't feel well go to the hospital and maybe they will test her there but don't count on it.

They are only testing those that are hospitalized with flu like symptoms-all across the nation. They are not testing everyone because it is taxing resources and they can't keep up with the demand just from those hospitalized. As long as people don't have underlying symptoms there is NO REASON to go to the dr. They can't give you anything to make you better. It keeps sick people away from the waiting rooms and infecting those that are not sick. It is common sense really. Now, if your child has asthma or some underlying condition dr's are giving those kids Tamiflu--often just calling in a prescription. They ARE documenting everything. When you call into the school they are asking if you have specific flu like symptoms. In our area there have been no confirmed cases of the seasonal flu, typical for this time of the year, thus if you have the flu it is assumed it is H1N1.

Our schools aren't releasing numbers but one school in our county had so many kids out sick they closed the school for one day last Friday.

I agree with Golfgal's post, but wanted to add a bit more.

In reality, it's impossible to test every case. There are so few labs that have the ability to perform the testing that it's not even a possibility (and that's not even addressing the costs involved with such an attempt). They can run the rapid testing, but since it's not very reliable, it too is just a waste of resources for the most part.

Agree that the data could come in handy on down the road, but in today's world, we just don't have the ability, unfortunately.

My kids' school reached about 30% at the height of the outbreak here. They didn't close the schools, but asked for people to refrain from sending sick children in. Thankfully, we're heading in the opposite direction with things calming down in our area.

I concur that the risk of death is pretty low, but that doesn't mean no one should worry. You really don't know if you or your loved one might be one of the unfortunate ones. While there are underlying conditions that come into play, not everyone who has died had underlying conditions that would have causes them to know how it might effect them.

There's about 40% out in both of my daughter's schools. One is a high school with about 1600 students and the other an elementary with only about 300.

We have school enrollment of 620, for K-12th grade. 195 did not show up this morning, by the end of the day the number was over 250. We have no school for the rest of the week

my high school of about 3,000 or more had about 400 out one week and about 2 days later we had 600+ out.
I was one of them. That was a month ago, though.

I know our elementary school had 80 kids out last week. I don't know how high the number has to be for it to close.

Personally, I think that they should be closed for the earlier part of the week leading up to Thanksgiving, they'd only miss 2 full days and 1 half day. That would give a nice chunk of time for everyone to get healthy.

I'm sure it won't happen but it's a shame that can't be done!

But see how do you really KNOW it is the H1N1??????????

It could be just the flu...I mean sometimes, this time of year when the weather gets all crazy people get sick, sometimes its only for 24 hours. You know like a stomach bug and NOT the flu. I just think things should be really documented better so you really know what is going on.

A couple weeks ago we had about 200 HS kids a day out (I work at the school) but as we have around 1800 kids in the school, those numbers, while higher than normal, were still only around 9-10%....we are back to more normal numbers now

DD16 has a good friend whose mom just passed away today from complications of H1N1...she went to the dr Thurs,, tested positive on Sunday and passed today..(I have thread about this, so I won't go into details here)

this is true in my case....with my son being sick. He has not had either vaccination. Therefore could be either bug. The only reason I am saying it likely is, is because he never gets the flu....this time he has. We all have had the seasonal flu shot....except him. sooooooo we are figuring that if we dont get sick than it was the seasonal flu....if we do it might be the H1N1...or any other of the 100's of flu bug's going around that were not in the seasonal flu vaccine.

So yes you are right. We really have no idea....just going with so many kids getting sick so fast. Even many that have had the seasonal flu shot.

I for one dont hold much claim to what the CDC puts out there in the way of numbers.

If you are only sick for 24 hrs, then most likely it's NOT the flu. There are a lot of other viruses that will give similar symptoms. However even w/ a mild case of a true flu virus (seasonal or H1N1) you will be sick for longer than 24 hrs.

Trust me.....I'm battling the whole "we don't test thing" in my head right now.

In September I started coming down w/ something on a Wed-- was sick and in bed Thurs-Sat-- felt run down but better on Sunday- back to work Monday. Nobody in my house caught that from me. They gave me Tamiflu then. I had no fever, but did feel really run down, bad cough, bad nasal congestion. They told me then it was "presumed flu". However, we were not seeing any cases in our area (at least at the large clinic I work at)

Fast forward to this past Friday, I was at work in the morning and felt fine-- after lunch I was getting the chills within 2-3 hrs I could barely drive myself home. My head was throbbing so bad, I had a fever, my throat hurt, I was coughing, my entire body hurt more than I can ever remember. This time I had the "fever" and it hit me out of nowhere. I started Tamiflu again this past Saturday. The difference is that this time I was exposed at least several dozen times the entire week to people who did in fact test positive for influenza A (presumed swine flu). I did end up in the ER on Sunday because it felt like my asthma was flared up (it wasn't-- I thinking I was having anxiety). They wouldn't test because I already had 4 doses of Tamiflu by then :confused3. I then seen my doctor last night and asked if he could do a rapid flu and he said the same thing--- too many days have passed and I've been treating it. The result might not be accurate. Anyhow, this time they feel more confident it's the flu and put me out of work until next Monday. Oh and this one my husband has now too.

I guess what I'm getting at is......I know why they aren't testing at the lab. However, I do think they should do more rapid in office tests. There is a part of me that would at least like to know if I can relax a little bit about this virus. I've been on pins and needles stressing about getting it. I think and pray I'm on the downside of it now.....I'm still congested but been fever free since Sunday during the day.

I agree that it would be nice if we had the resources available to document everything. For research purposes alone, it would be worth so much. We just don't have the labs, trained technicians, or the money (though we can always fund everything we have no money for) to document it all.

The bottom line is, H1N1 and your yearly flu are treated in the same manner. The same medications are used, and the procedure to get someone hospitalized if need be is the same for both. Since they are treated the same, there is really no priority to do all that's possible to detect every case (because resources aren't there).

I'm sure they also don't want the public knowing the exact figures because entire economies have been destroyed on a lot less. They have to try to curb fears, but at the same time, make sure everyone is treated as best we can under this particular set of circumstances.

Be aware, even if an H5N1 pandemic were to start, our government will act no differently than they have in the past. They will be trying to control fear/panic before tackling the issue.
