Just heard this story on the news and it broke my heart.

Last night 7 out of eight children died in a fire while the Mom was in the barn and Dad a few properties over.

Just so very sad.

Makes you count your blessings~

It was a 3 yr old that alerted the mom and dad of the smoke. It is going to be so tough on those parents to only have 1 child left after this. We will keep them in our prayers.

I watched the story on the Today Show this morning. Very sad, and I have a sneaking suspicion that Dad was involved, He was "asleep in his delivery truck" a mile down the road when it happened. Mom was milking a cow and the 3 year old ran out to get the mom.

Very sad story, I saw it first thing this morning.

I hope everyone out there will do a smoke alarm check today, such an easy fix for $10 or so. To think an alarm could have saved them all just gives me chills.

There are no words to convey the level of grief that family and community must be feeling. I cant even imagine

I just saw this on the news. omg the house was all blackened, I'm hoping they take that house down asap.

The dad was making deliveries and fell asleep while waiting between...which wasn't unusual according to the local news. As of yesterday morning, they didn't feel the dad was involved in any way. Things may have changed since then, but I hope not.

Can we not jump from to the conclusion that it was someone's fault?

The tendency on the DIS to blame people for tragedies (It must be someone's fault, if I can blame it on someone's mistake then I can pretend it would never happen to me) is awful.

Did the news mention if they were old order Mennonites? From what I understand the old order Mennonites don't use electricity so it might have been a candle or lantern that started the fire.
Heartbreaking for the family <sigh>

My thoughts were based on impressions formed while watching the story. Though rare, I have been wrong before, and I certainly hope I'm wrong on this.

As far as blame..the tendency is human nature, not exclusive to the DIS. :sad2: People generally like to have an explanation.

ITA. When I first read about it the headline said parents out. I thought it was another case of parents out partying or something. I now know that wasn't the case. This seems to be a close family and an awful tradgedy. I am not famiar with that culture (farming) but my heart just goes out to these parents for the horrible pain they are suffering.

this is so sad :( I don't think they parents are to blame at all, Mennonite aren't usally cold blooded killers

ITA, I don't know why some jump to conclusions without knowing all the facts.

I think that we on the web forget that we're in a public space where anyone can google our thoughts. While I think it's human nature to try and seek out explanations, I'd hate for someone suffering a tragic loss to read our speculations that they had killed 7 of their children.

Somehow I doubt the MENNONITE family has a computer and is checking out my thoughts on their predicament on the DIS. And even if they have a computer I think their hands are very full taking care of some very sad business, and not surfin' the net.

As I already pointed out upthread, I could be wrong, and I hope I am.

I just read that the children's Grandfather believes the fire started in the kitchen where they used a propane heater. I also read the 2 yr old and 3 yr old were watching TV so I am guessing they had electric.

This is a awful tragedy. I can't even imagine the pain this family must be going through. My prayers are also with the firefighters and any other professionals who have been exposed to seeing this tragedy. Just awful.
