$7 a gallon in January??!!!

No, I have not heard Obama say anything like what your BIL said he heard and like a PP mentioned I am in the Chicago area and would have heard something had he said it. I also googled the topic and found nothing of the sort except articles about a McCain add back in July accusing Obama of wanting to raise gas prices.

Sounds like BIL is one of those know it all know nothing people and what he says should be taken with a grain of salt. I have an uncle that is the same way and we all just roll our eyes and laugh when he insists he knows things or heard things.

DS came home from school and told me a kid said he dad said that when Obama moves to the white house in Feb he is going to spray paint the white house black. How stupid is that one? I bet he has more authority over what color to paint the white house than he does about what price he wants gas to be at.

You can believe it if you want and enjoy the anxiety you will feel for the next few months to come. I chose to live in the now and let the future be what it will especially when it is out of my control.

I could see prices going up but not necessarily skyrocketing. Fact is, even at $4/gallon, prices were artificially LOW. The price for a barrel of crude oil was 3 or 4 times what it was a year ago, so one would think gas would be up by about that much as well, but it wasn't. IIRC there were news stories about the Chinese buying lots and lots of oil and that is why the price was so high (supply and demand) not because of any Bush policies. However, the oil companies wanted to keep the republicans in power, so they kept the prices low.

Now, the Chinese aren't buying so much crude oil and prices have gone down somewhat. However, I could definitely see the oil companies raise prices in an effort to recoup what they see as loses and also to make as much profit before the increase in regulations (and therefore costs) that are bound to happen with a democrat controlled Congress and Executive branch.

And FTR, I didn't vote for either party's candidate. I voted for a 3rd party candidate because neither Obama nor McCain best represented me, so I o consider myself to be pretty impartial on this.

At this point theres no telling what to believe in. I mean if someone told you 6 months ago that gas prices would be under $2 in November, would you have believed them? Most likely not. Im not saying I believe it, but then Im not saying I dont believe it. With gas prices where they are right now, anything, and I mean ANYTHING is possible. In Jan/Feb you might look back at this thread and say "OMG gas prices are at $7" or whatever. Or you could be saying "see, everything is fine, no raise in gas prices!" All we can do is play the waiting game and see what the future brings us. I for one will be very upset as Im sure along with everyone else if gas prices ever got that high. DH already said he would stop driving to work and walk. We live right across the street from the base so it wouldnt be a long walk. Even if its 15 degrees outside with snow on the ground.

Actually Clark Howard (a nationally syndicated consumer advocate) and many economists predicted the decline in gas prices more than 6 months ago. This is because a slowing economy means a decline in demand-- which means that the pressure on prices declines.

The main thing accountable for the decline in price in fuel is a big drop in demand.

There is a big difference between someone speculating that in X months the price of gas will be over/under $Y (as the OP's BIL apparently did earlier) and saying that Obama definitely said that he personally going to cause the price of gas to rise to $7.

OP - you keep saying that you aren't trying to start rumors but you also keep insisting that Obama stated that he was going to do this. The fact that no reliable news source seems to have quoted this alleged statement, I think that it is very unlikely that it was ever actually stated.

Waiting until January will allow people to see if the price of gas goes up - it will not prove the existence of this supposed statement.

I'm not a fan of Obama at all. I can't see him saying or doing that. I don't think gas prices will ever be that high

$4 gas was Bush's fault, why can't $7 gas be Obama'a fault????:goodvibes

 Perhaps because Obama isn't an oil man like our current President? Perhaps because Obama's daddy isn't an oil man like our current President's? Perhaps because Obama's friends aren't all oil men? :rolleyes1 Obama stands to gain nothing by screwing us; it was the opposite for Bush.

Now back to my usual happy budget chatter. :hippie:

We are all free to speculate. As a matter of fact, I speculate that your brother-in-law is comprised of an excessive amount of excrement.

OP, you should tell your husband that he shouldn't believe everything he hears.

Um, close, but no. Neither one had or will have control over the price of oil because the president doesn't control the price of oil. No matter where they made their money, or what industry their family is in.

Not to add to this discussion, as I believe it's already been established that this "rumor" doesn't have a grain of truth to it....

but my boss, who is admitibly one of the biggest Obama haters around, said that when Obama takes office, gas prices will rise again because he will halt off-shore oil drilling, thus reducing supply and driving cost up again. :confused3

The people that heavily backed obama are the "global warming- Al Gore lunatics" who would like nothing better than to drive the American people from the "carbon footprint" ie:cars. To do this- they (the president and congress) - which will be controlled by dems- will attempt to increase taxes on gasoline to cut driving.

by the way, it's snowing here in Ohio and the temp is 32 degrees- Where oh where is my global warming when I need it?

The president does not have that kind of power. He does not determine the price of fuel. Yes, Congress can pass an increase in fuel taxes, but as they have to be re-elected, it is highly unlikely any tax they could pass would bring fuel up to $7.00 per gallon.

I have been trying to search all over, and I cannot find anything credible where Obama said he would cause the price of gas would skyrocket. Until I see it from a reputable source, I will just dismiss this rumor as unsubstantiated drivel.

I remember once you posting that you know little about Congress or your representation in Congress. I suggest you go back and learn a bit about how our government in full works.

OK, one of DH's brothers called the other night and told him that he just heard on the news that once Obama takes over in office in January, the gas prices are gonna sky rocket and we could see $7 a gallon!! :scared1: Biden is supposed to try to fight him so gas prices dont rise, at least not like that. Has anyone else heard about this? I dont know what news he heard it on, DH didnt ask, so who knows! :confused3

I dont know about you, but I feel happy tears come on everytime I pass our Wawa and see $1.88 and go down 1-2 cents a day!

*Just to add and clarify...Obama "supposdly" said that when he takes over in January gas prices are gonna sky rocket. Those words came out of his mouth during some annoucement he had made.
So I guess your brother in law did not vote for Obama.
That is a pretty good rumor. Not a new one but a pretty good one.

Its not a rumor..DH's brother stated that Obama made an annoucement and it came out of his mouth that when he takes over, gas prices are gonna sky rocket.

So where is the link to the news station he made this announcement on? If he said it would have been all over every news station.

There was an email sent before election day, from Dr. Dobson (Focus on the Family), that gave a list of doomsday scenarios that would befall the nation if Obama was elected. That's where the $7 gas notion came from. There may be other sources .. in fact, I'd be surprised if there weren't many other sources. But, I remember reading Dr. Dobson's email last month.

If you listen to his WHOLE speech and not just a snippet, you'd understand his point.

I understand his point - he's saying that basically it's a necessary evil that the electricity prices go up, because of changes in the way it is produced. (The plan is to produce it more eco-friendly.) Fine and dandy, but nobody can afford it right now.

ohhhh...so bush is the reason that the price increased but not that they decreased recently.... OK. TOTAL logic.

:thumbsup2

Which also by the way was pretty much the same plan McCain endorse.

Bottom line is: Petroleum is a non renewable source of energy. Americans make up a little over 6% of the worlds population but use 30-35% of its energy. China & India are exploding in population and using more and more petroleum.
Presidents effect the price of gas about as much as I do.

Whether we like it or not we have to find other sources of energy.

So far Obama has been blamed for
closing down the coal industry
raising electricity prices
stock market plummet
and now rise in oil prices
The man hasn't been president a day yet. Can we at least wait until he gets sworn in before blaming armegeddon on him.
