OK, one of DH's brothers called the other night and told him that he just heard on the news that once Obama takes over in office in January, the gas prices are gonna sky rocket and we could see $7 a gallon!! :scared1: Biden is supposed to try to fight him so gas prices dont rise, at least not like that. Has anyone else heard about this? I dont know what news he heard it on, DH didnt ask, so who knows! :confused3

I dont know about you, but I feel happy tears come on everytime I pass our Wawa and see $1.88 and go down 1-2 cents a day!

*Just to add and clarify...Obama "supposdly" said that when he takes over in January gas prices are gonna sky rocket. Those words came out of his mouth during some annoucement he had made.

Its not a rumor..DH's brother stated that Obama made an annoucement and it came out of his mouth that when he takes over, gas prices are gonna sky rocket.

I'm not even an Obama fan, but I don't see that happening. That is just silly rumors!

Who starts this kind of garbage? I have to say I also wonder about people who believe all this stuff.

First, Obama can't raise the price of gas. He can ask congress to pass laws that can raise taxes on gas but that means all those people would have to vote on it.

Why would anyone think this would be something he would do anyway? Geeez. Let the guy get into office before blaming him for stuff.

Yeah that sounds a little ridiculous to me. Why would he tell everyone in America that when he comes to office he will ruin the low gas prices?

The American president does not set the price of oil. As the previous poster mentioned, governments can indeed add taxes - we were paying close to $11/gallon in Germany this summer of which about 65% or more is tax. However those taxes would have to be approved, and I strongly doubt that the American system would approve adding $5/gallon in tax at the moment.

While the low price of crude oil is a definite benefit during the economic challenges, it unfortunately does not encourage finding new resources and reducing America's dependence on foreign oil.

A quick google search will find this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnLP12X3EgM

But I too agree that it does not make sense to listen to or circulate such rumours - I prefer to deal with factual information and will seek out supporting sources before listening to rumours which have no facts to support them.

OP, I see that you ammended your original post. Can you please post a link to this announcement as I would be curious to read about it (as I am certain are others)

Thank you.

Yeah I know it has to be passed all through congress. And I for one hope to God that it doesnt happen. Apparently Obama said that he was gonna forcefully make the prices rise.

Totally ridiculous. I'd need to see a link to a major news website before believing this kind of hogwash. As other posters have mentioned, the President doesn't have that kind of power, either. Rubbish -- nothing more than fear-mongering. And, like Christmas-in-Disney, I am in no way an Obama supporter.

There is no link because it was on some news that my brother-in-law heard it on. I stated that in my OP.

What total BS . . . Sometimes I can't believe the nonsense that gets posted on the DIS. Do people not stop and think about whether something might be silly before they type?

Well that would then fall into the rumour classification according to my definition, so I would certainly pay no attention.

Does anyone think that this would have any sort of positive impact considering the current world economic situation? Even when the US economy was strong Mr Obama did not support high gas prices, apparently. I consider the source and the validity of such things.

I also just wanna state that Im not trying to start any rumors. I am just simply telling you all what I heard and wanna know if anyone else heard about this.

Since you've heard it through the grapevine, this is total second hand information. Without a source, I don't believe it.

EXACTLY! Obama doesn't set the gas prices and I can't believe he'd say the prices will skyrocket once he takes office :rolleyes1 . This would have been all over the news (and I get Chicago news so it would DEFINITELY be there since he's based out of Chicago right now) and all over the internet easily found for anyone to look for it. Rumors :rotfl: he must have misunderstood what he heard. To go from 1.99 now to 7.00 in January in an economy like this...all I have to say is WOW :rotfl: :confused3 :scared1:

If your DH's Brother-Inlaw is good at predictions, ask him for the lottery numbers. Then you wont have to worry about the price of gas. I really don't think the WORLD economy is going to fall to that stage over 1 president. The economy now is working on the stock market and company's keeping themselves open for business and gas going for $7 per gallon is NOT going to help the economy. OPEC has cut production by more than 60%,so as much as they would love the gas to reach that high , people would just stop buying gas after it hit $4.50 per gallon . Thats what happened this summer!

I admit I was the same way, I said no way, he cant do that! And DH said I'm just telling you what my brother told me. All we can do is wait until January and see what happens. DH's brother was also the 1st one to tell us that gas prices will be down to $1.99 by December the latest. And he told us this at the beginning of October. We never heard anything of it. We both laughed and said yeah right. We'll believe it when we see it. What happens, about a week and a half ago our gas finally dropped below $2!
