6th grade graduation parties? do most people have them?

just curious on what you guys all can tell me -- and what would be an appropriate gift?

Nope, never heard of a 6th grade graduation party. As far as a gift, cash or gift cards are always good for a 6th grader.

My DD & DS had 6th grade "graduations" as their elementary school (private) went from 3K-6, then students went on to either different Middle Schools (public) or other private schools that went up to grade 12.

So, many of these students had been together for over 6 years, and would be going off in different directions. The graduation, and party, were to mark an important milestone in their lives.

I agree that giftcards, or cold hard cash, are the way to go, unless you know the child really well, and know of a gift he/she would appreciate more.

Last year DD did have a 5th grade graduation/parties before going on to middle school. It was a special time without being blown out of proportion. She did get small gift card/cash gifts from close family.

We've since moved and now she's in a school where 6th grade is tops...don't know if they do anything around here - hope not!

our middle school is 7,8 th grade. So 6th grade graduation is when you leave elementary.

In my town 8th grade graduation is the biggie (other than hs and college of course). We're in the same school from 1-8 (and some kids readieness through 8th) so 8th grade graduation is huge. I've never really heard of 6th grade graduations since most schools around here move to middle school after 5th grade. Small amounts of cash, or a savings bond would be appropriate.

Not here...6th grade is Jr High School...5th grade ends grade school but no one I know has parties for that...some have them for 8th grade though.

No 5th grade graduation here either (6th is middle school).

In our district they don't do kindergarten graduation or 8th grade graduation.

No home parties but the school had a 6th grade celebration of sorts the kids made a power point presentation with a baby picture and a current picture and a cute "poem" that went something like I used to crawl now I'm the starting running back or I used to play in the sink and now I swim on the swim team sort of thing and then what they wanted to be. the 6th graders sang a song and then we had punch and cookies(brought in by the 5th grade parents) lasted about an hour. For 8th gr. they have an assembly in school no parents and a dance in the evening that oh boy goes till 10 and no 7th graders!

In my children's case, they were leaving elementary school and going to a High School across town. (Upper and Lower Schools) Some students were going to 3 different public schools, and the rest were going to 3 different private schools.

As I mentioned, DS was in class with some of these children since he was 3 years old, so it was a BIG milestone in his life.

The school has a tradition of a Flying Chapel just before graduation. The students spread their wings and fly away from the "nest" into a larger world.

Our son had a 6th grade "promotion" ceremony at his elementary school. We didn't have a party or give him a gift. We did, however, let him choose a restaurant and took him for a nice dinner - immediate family only. I can't imagine his grandparents or anyone else getting involved until his real graduation.

We will, however, hit people up for gifts at his Confirmation.

My son is graduating from 6th grade this year and we are planning a nice dinner out with family. I think some do tend to do it up big. Last year a few had limos.I personally think that is a bit too much.

Our elementary school runs Preschool through 6th grade; middle school is 7th and 8th grade. There is a big graduation ceremony at the school - "diplomas" given, slide show of pictures through the years, each child tells a special memory while they were at the school, etc. They also go on a big (long) special field trip the day before (Boston - Aquarium, Duck Tour, Quincy Market, USS Constitution, RainForest Cafe, etc). It's a big deal.

We took our family out for a nice lunch after the graduation. One girl had a pool party and invited the whole class - no gifts given. My son also wanted to have a party, but we waited until the end of the summer and had a "going off to middle school" party. The kids in his class were going to at least 5 different schools, so they enjoyed being together one last time.

We switched DS13 to the public schools when he was in 6th grade. They have a ceremony of sorts where the band played a few songs, the choir sang a few songs and they gave out some awards. After a bunch of us took the kids to Dairy Queen, that was the extent of it.

The Catholic school does an 8th grade graduation where everyone dresses up in nice dresses, but nothing formal. Some of the girls will have their hair done and the graduation ceremony is part of a Mass. After all the 8th graders walk to the bowling alley and bowl (it's a tradition). Usually the parents will give the kids a gift, girls may get a necklace, boys a watch-nothing really expensive though. The day after graduation the 8th graders go to the amusement park in the twin cities for the day. No one has parties and most don't get gifts from anyone other then parents and maybe grandparents.

The public schools don't do anything for 8th grade graduation--our schools are K-6, 7-8 and 9-12. They are switching that next year because they opened a new high school so the schools will be k-4, 5-8 and 9-12.

Sixth grade graduation is big around here. It's the end of grade school in a small horse town. To give you an idea how small, my daughter's sixth grade class is 24 kids. Then they go to a big regional middle school/high school with three other towns.

There's a ceremony, a reception and the kids then have their first school dance. Usually one family holds a party for the parents/siblings that the graduates then go to after their dance is over.

My older son decided to have a big 13th b-day party instead of a grad party but we did have a backyard BBQ party for my younger son with family and close friends. We'll probably do the same for my daughter.
