My DH and I JUST found out we're going to be parents! We're thrilled. We're only 5 weeks at this point.

We leave in a few days for Disney with friends, and we're a little nervous about what I can do and what I can't. I don't want to risk anything so I'll try to stay away from the high risk rides, but everyone we're going with knows how I love them! That's all I've talked about since we planned the trip -- that first ride on the Tower of Terror. I would imagine this is a ride I should avoid -- but once I say I can't go on that as well as the multiple other rides -- everyone will know and we're trying not to tell anyone until at least 2 months. What do we do?

Any other ideas of rides I should avoid?

Nervously ecstatic!!!!

First of all CONGRATS!!

Definately call your doctor's office. They will give you the best advice. But here is what my experience was.

We visited the World Nov. 2002. We had plans to try for baby #2 after our Disney trip. Well mother nature had other plans. While we were there I noticed that "something was missing"(if you catch my drift). I rode all the big rides. When I got back and confirmed that yes indeed my little princess was actually on her way, I voiced the concern about the rides to my Dr. His response was that because it was SO early on in my pregnancy (was 4-5 weeks) that it really made no difference.

However, I probably would have avoided the big rides had I known for sure that I was PG. But that early on you should be safe with the "tamer" rides like PoTC, Buzz, GMR, etc.

I might steer clear of IaSW, that song might instill morning sickness:rotfl:

oops, hit submit instead of preview so I'll post again to finish. Sorry!

How long are you going to be in Disney. Could you use illness as an excuse not to ride the big rides? Say you have the stomach flu and as much as you are dying to ride those rides, they might upset your stomach.

Or do your friends know you are "trying" for a baby? You could say that you are avoiding the big rides "just in case".

My wife has gone to Disney a couple times while pregnant. Our doctor has said that don't go on any rides that Disney warns pregnant women against. You may be very early in your pregnancy, but that still means that you are pregnant. Maybe there is only a small chance that something will go wrong because of a ride, but there IS still a chance. And when you're talking about the health of youre baby, you should judge your risks very carefully and ask yourself if it is worth it.
There is still plenty to do at WDW. I know you like the thrill rides there but I'd feel terrible if I said "don't worry" and then you ended up having problems because of a thrill ride.

Congratulations to you both. How wonderful:tongue:

I agree with Jason (treesinger). Don't go anything they say not too. I was 3 months when we went, and I had a very enjoyable time without going on the rides. Plus I would have been totally paranoid about anything happening. We were kinda in the same boat as you--we went with family. We did end up telling them before we left, but again we were further along then you are.

I did go on a few things that they signs warned not too, but I made the decision based on being there several times before. I went on the Safari--(I had read to sit in the front row, because it is less bumpy) and a few of the water things at Blizzard Beach. I would avoid anything with big drops or forces on your body. DH rode Primeval (sp?) Whirl before me,and said that it was a no go because it can really whip you around.

You can either go with the feeling ill routine, but if your friends know you are trying, they may catch on--especially if you feel ill all week, and when its time to go on the ride. Or, if you trust them enough, Tell them. They will be excited and happy for you--just wait until you are there, then they can't spill the beans on you. Also swear them to secrecy! You will be close to your 2 months that they won't have to keep the secret long.

Have fun, there is still plenty to do and fun to be had.

:goodvibes

Thank you all! We are very excited and I don't want to take any risks! I've been to Disney and am familiar with the rides, so I'll stay away from all of those with big drops or warnings (Tower of Terror - although it's my favorite -- but there's somthing to say for sacrafice!)

I'll have to play sick until we find the right time to fill everyone in. One of my friends does not like the big rides so I'll try to play it off as if I'm keeping her company. I don't think they'lll buy it for a second, but I'll have to stick to my guns until the right time comes. Wish us luck!

Thanks again for the great advice!

We went to WDW in October when I was 19-20 weeks pregnant and I avoided all the big rides, but I did go on the safari in AK 3 times. The 1st time we were in the 2nd row and it was a smooth ride, the 2nd time we were in the last row and it was so much bumpier that I didn't enjoy myself at all cause I kept thinking I was causing harm to the baby. We rode it again on our last day and requested the front row and not only was it a very smooth ride, but our driver was exceptionally slow so there were really no bumps, though there was a huge line of safari trucks piled up behind us. I had considered some of the other restricted rides that don't seem so bad, like Dinosaur, but after worrying throughout the 2nd ride on the safari and the rest of the day that I had done something horrible to my unborn daughter, I decided against all the others. Odds are your friends will notice if you typically ride thrill rides but pass them all on this trip. You could always try a mild one first, then say it made you ill and use that as an excuse for the bigger ones, but even that would seem suspicious after a few days. I think I'd do what another poster said and tell them you're trying to have a baby and the dr said to avoid rides like that in case/as a precaution, etc. Congrats and have a great trip!

I'd call your doctor. Some rides are relatively tame (like POTC), and the signs still sometimes say not to ride if you're pregnant (probably for liabililty reasons), but I can't imagine something like that would be bad for someone not far along.

I'm definitely no expert though!!!

Just a tip from someone who's 11 weeks pregnant right now--be prepared for morning sickness. Plan to eat frequently, and eat something right before bed. Have food in your room so that you can eat as soon as you get up. And make plenty of trips to the restroom. I've never read about this in any of my books (and I've read them all), but having a full bladder increases my nausea.

Smells may be a problem for you. You should probably plan to carry a lemon wedge with you every day. If you come across a smell that bothers you, you can smell the lemon. It's a pleasing smell, and it's strong enough to overpower the offensive odor.

I went to WDW early in my 2nd pregnancy (before I knew I was pregnant). When I saw my doctor, I was freaking out. She said not to worry - I could ride anything I wanted to and it wasn't going to hurt me. And she is normally so strict on me while pregnant, I feel certain she is right.

Now lugging the suitcase up to the third floor of OKW and back down...I could definitely have done without that!

The lemon wedge is a GREAT idea! Wish we had thought of that! We would smell fried food all over the park and it made DW sick.
My wife also went on the Safari. (Funny, it seems preggo women ride the safari anyway, eh?).
Now some things are a little too cautious. POTC? I'm sure the warning is because of the small drop. Again, judge your risks carefully. I wouldn't even think of warning DW away from POTC because the warning exaggerates the "thrill" POTC will give you.
The safari DID make my wife queasy but it was the only thing she liked in AK. She thinks she probably shouldn't have gone on. Again, judge the risks carefully, and have a wonderul time!

Don't think about it as what you "can't" do....think about what you can do. I went to Disney World last September when I was 32 weeks along. I had an absolute blast - and like you Tower of Terror and Rock-n-Rollercoaster are my favorites. Now granted I didn't have to try to hide it :D like that would have been possible. But my DH and I went with friends and it was very enjoyable. We went to BB and TL and had never done either before. It was very relaxing - more so than any previous trip. And make sure you get plenty of rest - you may only be 6 weeks along then but that was when I was the most tired. Things I did to enjoy it more - I stood in the lines and went through all the pre-ride areas - you have to admit that's one of the best parts of TOT & RNR!! My doctor told me that the warning signs were CYA on Disney's part that I could do anything that didn't have major G-force - but I decided that I was not willing to ride anything that had a warning - EXCEPT Kilamanjaro Safari in AK. And like the others I had rode it mulitple times before and requested the front seat. My only thought was that IF something were to happen I didn't want to have to wonder if it was something I did. Now I have a beautiful 12 week old baby girl who is the light and joy of my life who I am very IMPATIENTLY waiting until she is 2 to take her first Disney trip. Sorry to ramble - but have a marvelous trip and take good care of yourself and your precious gift.

Amanda

thesmiths: How did your trip go? Im just curious. My DH and I are trying to conceive and if it worked this month I will be 5 1/2 weeks pregnant when I go to WDW with my Mom in March. We got pregnant the first month trying before so I know its possible. I am wondering how you did since you were at the same point in your pregnancy that I could possibly be in.

On our last trip this last fall, my sister found out she was pregnant the day before we left for Disney. She called her doctor in a panic A- to confirm and B-to find out what to do about rides. He told her there was not one single thing she couldn't do because it was sooo early. I would call your doctor then take there advice combined with doing what you are comfortable with.
