6-17-06 -- on board now!!

Hi,

End of Monday day at sea.. falling behind in reports and we go to Cayman tomorrow. Will update on day two in the morning.

On Disney Quest.. Your 8 year olds will not be able to do that on their own. My son is 9 and was unhappy his 11 year old sister gets to check herself into and out of the lab and can participate in the Quest.

The Quest room is VERY cool. But don't worry. The 8-9 group gets to go there as part of the Oceaneers Lab. For example, during today's day at sea my 8 year old DS played the Goofy Olympics ( :sunny: TIP: SUNSCREEN!!!), baked cookies, did animation drawings, made a new best friend, and went to Disney Quest for fun.

My sometimes reserved DD (11) played pictionary, wouldn't leave the lab later in the day to play with DD because she wanted to go to kareokee, also did animation, and WOW -- started in the Stack (which is REALLY COOL -- Wish I had that as a teenager).

Tomorrow is stingrays. Just saw Golden Mickeys -- typical Disney show. Fun.. Nothing new but all the stuff you will love.

Great report! Something so exciting knowing it is LIVE!!
Question...what is the age limit for Quest?? We are traveling in Feb with 8 year old twins...I was hoping they could enjoy it!!??!!

Here is more info for your kids to see about the OQ area. Each age group has some time in there. :)

Thanks for taking the time to do the live report! Glad to hear that your DD's bag showed up. :)

Sorry for the delay... but that should be a good sign about how many things there are to do.

Day 2 -- Key West
My Disney family has never been to Key West so we are looking forward to some time in town but 'shopping' is not our thing. So we scheduled the catamaran sail and snorkel. :sunny: TIP: Sign up for your excursions EARLY. The best ones go fast, like XCARET. I think I would have preferred the kayack sail and snorkel (we did Kayack on 4 day through mangroves -- was AWESOME).

The Magic arrives in to Key West about noon so you have time to enjoy the ship in the morning. We decided on brunch in Lumiere's. Yummmmmm eggs benedict. Lumiere's is in the same spot as Triton's. It is a Beauty and the Beast theme versus Ariel. I think I like the blues of Triton's better (being my favorite color) but it is really the same.

Brunch was good, not great (eggs weren't runny)... but we aren't here for the food (or as DD says at each meal... "we are 'here' for the food (refering to our dinner table) but not 'here' (refering to the whole ship) for the food).

DOCKING
THe Magic docks in this port right near the center of town. It is as convenient as staying at the Hyatt. Although we are in the U.S. you need to go through the normal routine of showing your key card and i.d. for adults.

SAIL AND SNORKEL
We took the Fury to the reef. When I saw how many people were in our group I began to panick. There was NO WAY we'd fit comfortably on the catamaran I saw docked at the pier. Amazingly we were very comfortable. DW and I scrambled for a spot in the shade and DD and DS went straight to the front of the boat. Fortunately it was a partly cloudy day so the exposure to sun was reduced (good thing for us northerners). :sunny: TIP: Sunscreen, SUNscreen, SUNSCREEN!!!!!! (and don't forget the tops of your feet).

The reef near Key West is apparently part of the second largest reef in the world (Australia's great barrier reef being the largest). We sailed out to the light house and anchored. There were a few other boats but it wasn't overwhelmingly crowded. DW and I buddied w/ the kids, me w/ DS and she w DD.

Having been certified for diving in the Caymans I didn't find the quality of this area (with respect to coral) terribly exciting... But that's just me. DS was constantly screaming through his snorkel "Dad, Dad... look at this, look at that". That was worth the expense of the excursion. Colors were somewhat greyed out due to the overcast but the variety of fish was wonderful for the kids. Highlights for us included many large parot fish (very colorful), a trumpet fish, and a 3 foot octopus. The octopus was really exciting. It saw us and expanded out in a defensive posture... when it was clear we weren't leaving it retreated to its hole, leaving its two eyes poked out watching us. Other people saw rock lobster (they look like alien versions of the Maine variety) and a small sand shark.

Once back to the boat (no sailing, just motoring ... but that was fine as it was faster) we decided to go into town for a short stint as the line to get to the boat looked long (discovered later it moves very fast).

In town we did a few obligatory things. We found key lime (in the form of a cookie), ate a few conch fritters (not as good as the ones my wife had 15 years ago in the Caymans... but maybe that was the fog of romance... ;) , took pictures of the famous wild cats and roosters, and purchased a few shells. Malory Square (spelling?) is 5 minutes from the boat. We declined many other options including the tour of the museum (looks cute) and renting an electric car to tour (more like an oversized golf cart) -- need things for next time (hopefully).

Then it was back to the ship. Tonight was Lumiere's for dinner so we wanted to be slightly dressy. Dinner was fine... (I think Dora our server (an attractive slight woman) is determined to fatten us up for the slaughter). Again.. not here for the food.... and then off to the show.

Tonight was the long version of Gary DeLena's show (the rockn'roll comedian). Having rested my wife wasn't falling off the seat this time but it was VERY funny and family friend. A good time for all.

Tonight is a good night to let the kids stay up late. We just wandered the ship a bit doing people watching (call us boring but it was already a long day). So... off to bed and ready for a fun day at sea on Monday.

OTHER ACTIVITIES
I will post Navigators when I get home but here are some other things for this day:

Who wants to be a Mouseketeer (most nights I think) -- Disney's version of the TV show.... Played w/ kid and parent and you win pins I think. Some of the kids are amazingly Disney smart (we watched a little tonight).

Cabaret Show (10:15 -- Adult version of David DiMuzio -- would love to see that but keeping w/ family this trip)

60's Dance party

Great report! Thanks for taking the time to do it. Hope you are having a fantastic day! :sunny:

Day 3
DW and i are somewhat familiar w/ Grand Cayman having done our dive certification there 15 years ago (pre kids and other things). This island uses tenders (medium sized boats) to transport you to the shore and back. We were doing a non-Disney excursion (SCANDOLOUS pirate: ) with Captain Bryan, who was recommended in another post. As a result, I was very anxious about getting to shore on time.

No Worries
The tender process is painless. When your party is ready ( :sunny: HINT: Yes... believe Disney.. wait till you are all ready) you meet at the Buena Vista Theater. Your wait will probably be no more than 10 minutes and you will be escorted onto a tender. The ride is no more than 10 enjoyable minutes. :sunny: HINT: You may not bring fruits or other food to shore... although no one checked our bag I encourage you to follow the rules. You won't need the stuff anyway. :sunny: HINT: This is one island where water may be cheaper on shore. Disney sells small water bottles for $1.75. We purchased a large 1/2 liter for $2.00 on shore near our excursion (a few blocks out of town -- so not at a tourist trap).

STINGRAYS AND MORE
Captain Bryan was recommended on this site by another guest. He was great. I was interested in avoiding the Disney crowds (and 'rules'). The Captain's team was great. We went first to the Stingray city. What an exciting time for the kids. My wife and I did this 15 years ago at about 40 feet under. This trip was off a sand bar in the middle of the Cayman bay. The stingrays come right up to you.

Since DW and I were here the tour guides have become more environmentally friendly. In the old days each person was provided a bag of squid to feed the rays. Now adays the resonsible guides only bring 1 bag simply to lure the rays. It works great..... You will be bumped and possible tasted by these harmless creatures. :sunny: HINT: If you want to attract them and 'keep in the rules on feeding" simply wet your hand in the squid container (yum... smelly squid) and the rays will all come to you.... no need to feed.

Bryan's team came with a photographer (i'm sure most excursions do). This guy took some EXCELLENT pictures. Even better, when you order he doesn't send you prints. Rather, he sends you the disk with the originals so you can make as many copies as you want. We had more than 10 pictures of the family petting (and kissing the rays for 7 years of good luck). I bought the package for about $80. Pricey but really a good deal.

Next we motored a few hundred hards away to the barrier reef. Our trip was supposed to have 3 stops but the crew recommended staying here longer. The recent rain made the other stops 'green' and less clear. Their point was we would see more and better here. We trusted their view and I don't regret it.

I buddied w/ DS again and we were off. :sunny: HINT: Check your gear before leaving. DS had a snorkel where the mouth bite was bitten off. This makes it much harder to maintain a good seal and keep the salt water out. DS and I switched and he was much better off. :sunny: HINT: DON'T TOUCH THE CORAL!!!! Your guides will tell you this... Believe them. Touching the coral kills it... and with the polution today the coral is already having enough trouble.

DS and I saw many variety of animals. Parot fish, beautiful blue and orange ones, I saw a flounder on the bottom (two eyes on top of head --- very alien -- nothing like the guy in Ariel's movie)... and the best was two BEAUTIFUL squid swimming as a pair. They had HUGE eyes and i got within 5 feet of them.

The coral here is MUCH more beautiful and varied than that at Key West. Lots of Brain coral and fan coral. The water is also crystal clear.

:sunny: HINT: If you are a diver YOU MUST BRING YOUR PADI CERTIFICATION CARD WITH YOU!!! Disney will not allow you to dive without your card. Plus you must have dived within the past 2 years.

:sunny: HINT: If you are a diver -- this is the place. The diving is phenomenal. 15 years ago DW and I did our deep dive, night dive, marine life dive, and wreck dive here. REALLY GREAT.

After the snorkeling we were brought back to the town. It's a great and safe place to shop. Cayman has 700+ banks and is very modern. If you want you can rent a car (or scooter) and tour the island yourself. We had planned to take a taxi to the turtle farm ( :sunny: HINT: The turtle farm is great for little kids.... lots of turtles in all sizes -- just don't tell the kids they are being raised for consumption) but were generally tired and went back to the boat (DW stayed to shop a little.... :sunny: HINT: don't buy t-shirts at the stores just off the dock. There are many cheaper places a few blocks down the way (we are talking like from $30 at dock to $15 2 blocks away) -- Disney provides a map).

BACK ON BOARD
Tonight was Master Chef night. This is when the main dining themes change from the Wonder's 3 or 4 day trips. You are back in your original dinning room (Parot Cay for us) and all rooms have the same menu. Tonight was cruise casual. Again.. food was fine (still swear that Dora, our head server, is fattening us up for some ritualistic slaughter later in the cruise).

Entertainment tonight was "Twice Charmed" -- Disney's newest cruise show... a twist on the original. I won't spoil the show for those that haven't seen it but it was very cute. Given my family's age we tend to do these activities but there are many, many other options aboard. :sunny: HINT: A REALLY great place to hang out as an adult in a non-bar environment is Cafe Cove on deck 9 --- this is a Starbucks look alike. You will see many of the crew (off duty) visiting too.... and there are board games to play --- this is adult only. Other bars are forward on Deck 3 and all look great.

More to come later as we went to TULUM the next day.

Great report so far! We'll be on that cruise on on the 1st. Hope they fix the simulator by then!

Mr. Shiny,
I will also be on the July 1st cruise. Reading this report makes me even more excited. I can hardly wait. Thanks for writing these reports. I feel like I am on the cruise with you.
Have a great trip.

Sooo sorry for misordering these. The real day 3 is a day at sea not Cayman.

When I did the 4 day Wonder I thought I'd hate these days... but they are WONDERFUL. We like to spend time with our DS and DD so on island days they are with us on excursions. They, however, miss the club. So these are the days they get to go to the lab and play, play, play.

My wife and I had scheduled for Palo's for brunch (again.. how could I have forgotten this day!!!) So, we woke with the kids and took them to Topsiders. One nice thing on the 8th floor is we are one floor from Topsiders. In fact, you can use the secret aft stairs and go directly into the restaurant (often right before it opens).

Breatkfast done we signed kids into clubs. P.S. The simulator has been fixed. There are several days where families can visit Quest so everyone should have a chance to try this (we haven't -- need something for next time).

Then DW and I are off to Palos for Brunch. This is our first time at Palos having not had time on 3 day or 4 day. WHAT A MISTAKE! We missed one of the best features. As i've said previously, we aren't 'here for the food' but Palos food is WONDERFUL.

Our waiter walked us through the buffet display of 'starters'... things like pruscuito wrapped asparagus, oysters rockefeller, etc... And then he showed us the various entrees. I highly recommend the fruit pizza for desert. We also tried the veal marsala and the eggs benedict (mix the salmon w/ the spinach one --- wonderful). Tiny desert presnetationsion of mouse and tiramasu (yes i know i'm killing the spelling on these but they just blew the horn for our arrival at castaway cay and i have to run off!).

Will post the rest later -- don't want to skip the details.

O

I think another trip updates on pirate ship. Wasn't there when we were there but sounds like it is there now.

Will update with rest of info and links to navigators and pictures over the next few days.
